Screen Two: Honest, Decent and True (1986)
Very strong largely pre-fame cast in a very entertaining film drama set in 1980's London Ad biz.
Absolutely loved this play when transmitted. Recorded it on VHS at the time, kept it ever since, and recently bumped it to DVD. Wonderful performances from a permanently weary Derrick O'Connor (superbly cynical), Adrian Edmondson, (when he had hair!),so laid back, he's barely awake - but like a true pro, can turn it on when he needs to... Arabella Weir (before she became more famous) in a languidly Chelsea secretarial role, and Richard E. Grant in the first performance I ever saw him in (pre-Withnail and I) - as a very Zen black-clad water- drinking designer..and.. Gary Oldman, as a leather-jacketed visitor, who wows the women, but prefers boys! What a cast! Denizens of London's 1980's advertising world - focusing on a campaign to promote a new beer... while keeping together their private lives. It is delightfully funny - and quite delightful...
The Outer Limits: Quality of Mercy (1995)
Haunting, disturbing, quite brilliant episode!
Yes, an outstanding, and very disturbing episode.
It has qualities, as suggested by the above reviewers, that haunt me to this day.
Terrific how, what is essentially a two-handed, and probably relatively low-budget drama in a confined space, manages to be a brilliant piece of TV drama. Robert Patrick is very good - and I found the female lead arrestingly beautiful, even as she was being gradually transformed - and her increasingly pathetic plight is both shocking and very moving.
But drawn in, and caring for them both, as you inevitably are, nothing prepares you for the brilliant and mind-twisting final revelation.
A real humdinger of an episode - and, as I say, one that will probably, as it does for me, and the reviewers above, haunt you forever!
Tin Cup (1996)
Loved it!
Yeah - absolutely love this film - and I'm not even a golfer! I just love Costner's performance - one of the most likable I've seem him do - and, of course, Rene Russo is just gorgeous - not just a looker, but her personality in this - touch of the Katherine Hepburn's in "Bringing Up Baby" mode.
It's just so lovely - it swings along to great music - and the rivalry with Don Johnson (why has he never been bigger?), is great.
OK, all the buddies back at Roy's base don't add much, except as a chorus, and a foil for Roy (Costner) - but, really - this is such a sweet film. Who could dislike it? Anyone who does, has got a hard heart. Sure, it's just swinging romantic froth - but don't we all need a little of that in our lives?
