Mrs. Miracle (2009)
Movie better than novel
This movie is one, a first for me, that I can truly say is BETTER than the book. (The book contains too many other subplots, especially the annoying, psychotic in-laws.) I can easily see why they were omitted to make the story fit into a two hour made-for-TV drama.....................
The movie followed the book closely, but did not give us enough Mrs. Merkle "Miracles". You were never quite sure what she was...Debbie Macomber should have taken a few more clues from the old Nanny and the Professor show and stolen a few more subtle hints as to Mrs. Merkle's powers...................
The book is the last by author Debbie Macomber I could tolerate reading....her writing has become trite and preachy instead of entertaining and interesting and are not worth the price charges for novels these days......................
If you did not like this movie, you will HATE Debbie Macomber's books written in the past 10 yrs (her earlier works were actually better)............................
The Convent (2000)
opening scene placed in 1960
The opening scene of the movie, in the church, is wrong in this aspect: In 1960, all the nuns would have been kneeling at railings across the front of the church facing the altar for Communion. Their backs would be towards the pews, & the church entrance as well. The priest would have not been facing the people, either. The priest would have been standing, with his back to the congregation,at an altar against the front rear wall of the church. This is why most really old churches have this ornate altar across the front rear wall, while newer, modern churches just have an altar sitting out in the middle.
The changes all occurred AFTER the 1965 Vatican II Conference and as far as I can remember, were effective in early 1966. So it was not until, say 1/1/1966, that people started receiving communion standing up in a line and the priest started saying the prayers for the Mass at an altar facing the congregation.
AND the entire mass was in Latin in 1960....another of the Vatican II changes...The Mass and prayers were said in English after 1965.
This is what years of Catholic school got me: trivial knowledge no one else remembers. LOL.... I cannot comment on the rest of the movie for historical accuracy because my teenage kids only forced be to watch the first few minutes (they wanted to see what I would say). They were floored when all I said was it is historically incorrect.
Ghost Whisperer (2005)
Why did they mess with a good thing
My family has watched every episode of Ghost Whisperer. Since the show first aired.......until this season. It is just getting more and more bizarre.
The first season was great. The second season less great. It was already a little over the top. The third? A REAL STINKER.
I guess we can start going out for dinner on Friday nights again. We will just make sure we get home in time for Moonlight.
I just erased all our TIVO'd Ghost Whisperer episodes, except the pilot, because the show has been absolutely ruined.
We just want nothing to do with it anymore, ever. It's an insult to the audience.
Juvies (2007)
From a parent of Lake County, IN Teenagers
I just heard about "Juvies" from friends, followed by relatives, yesterday, 2/10/07. I found an episode on today. And it turns out I know one of the kids, his group of friends has been one of the thorns in my side in the relationship with my now 18-yr-old son. The boy on TV had been to my home several times, and kicked out once, for which we were chastised by our son for "embarassing" him. Tough.
My younger son was adopted in the courtroom shown with the same court personnel four years ago. The court personnel are extremely nice, a pleasure to work with.
I have also been "inside" the Lake County, IN , juvie system twice within the past year: once to have kids prosecuted after being burglarized by teens, the next time after my own son pushed me, I had a concussion and I pressed charges.
Although not entirely the fault of the "Four-Star" Lake Central School District in Northwest IN, a great deal of the juvenile problems (drug use, fights, theft, etc.)IN THIS AREA of Northwest area direct result because a building meant to hold under two thousand students is holding around four thousand students: and until last week, there was only one security officer and the kids have it all figured out as to where he'll be and when. In other words, the inmates are running the asylum.
I have heard, over and over, from dozens of parents and many more students: drugs are sold, snorted, smoked, etc., in and around the school: in bathrooms, under the stage,in the auditorium, in shop classes. Fights break out daily. Kids leave and return to school to buy fast food, drugs, etc, as they please.
The administration is good, but not good enough. These kids are, smart and sneaky (but not intelligent), Probably why Indiana has one of the highest HS dropout rates in the country as I read last spring in Time magazine. Oh, and this is no poverty area, either. I believe there is less than 10 percent poverty level in this school district, Lake Central.
As for the show Juvies, the reenactments, looked to be filmed in California, are HORRIBLE. The will be the ruination of this otherwise good show. It brought my rating of the show down by 3 points.
As for the reality side, I have a feeling I am going to see many more young people I have met, that have even been in my home. I ran cub scout camp here in IN for many years and what upsets me most is that some of those same kids needlessly ended up in the system. They could have stayed in scouts, but found it boring or an embarrassment.
I am almost afraid to watch the other episodes. I wonder how many of the people I will know. If there are more kids I know I just hope they are not from the weakest link of the Lake Central Schools: Westlake Special Education.
Twitches (2005)
My Family Loved It - Want More!
We TIVO'd Twitches and watched it over and over. Even my 17 yr old son watched it several times. We would still be watching it if someone had not accidentally deleted it.
The kids liked it, I liked it, even my husband watched it and liked it--and he NEVER watches family programing.
The story was good, the cast great. My children are all adopted and appreciated that aspect of the story line.
It was great to see Tia & Tamara in a new program, although we love reruns of Sister, Sister.
We would love to see it be a series on the Disney Channel or at the very least, see a sequel made to Twitches. Maybe call it "Twitched". Our favorite Disney made for TV were the Hallowteentown trio of movies until TWITCHES.
WE LOVE TWITCHES
My Name Is Earl (2005)
Grown up version of a Nick show
As usual, all we get to see in Movies and on television these days are remakes and retreads of other shows and movies.
This show is the grown up version of 100 Deeds for Eddie McDowd, an old Nick/Nickolodeon show from a few years ago.
Are they using the same writers? Or do they just go over the scripts and make changes?
Don't get me wrong: I am a fan of the show. I just do not feel it's ORIGINAL.
I like the actors. I enjoy the show. But it's just VERY similar to 100 Deeds.
NBC, we all know, is desperate to increase their ratings. Maybe they can make new versions of other kid's shows: Salute your shorts, Are you afraid of the Dark, and So Weird would be good places to start. Then again, So Weird is sort of like Medium.....but that's another comment.
