I am a huge fan of the original Spitting Image so this reboot had me excited. However the show was very disappointing.
To be fair, there are many funny sketches within the series. Anything with Boris and his cabinet is brilliant. The Royals are very funny. And I think the Pope Race sketch is brilliant. I was laughing on several occasions.
However, the majority of the show has many problems with the sketches.
1. An over reliance on certain puppets: I could not be bothered watching the countless Meghan and Harry sketches. In the original series, certain puppets would not overstay their welcome (unless they were genuinely important people like Thatcher) 2. Less Americans: Hear me out, Spitting Image is a British show, therfore they should mainly appeal to the British people. When they tried to appeal to both countries, they ended up appealing to neither. I don't think many British people know Nancy Pelosi that well.
3. Snappier sketches: Some sketches go on for too long and could've been cut short. I don't believe Elon Musk should've had a series long story for example.
4. More variety: This one is more of a nitpick as I understand COVID has affected things such as the amount of puppets they could make. However it is still a problem and I believe more aspects of today's culture could've been satirised such as influencers and other politicians. Hopefully after COVID has cleared, more puppets could be made.
5. Better production value: Some of the sets looked a bit cheap in my opinion
I may have gone on for too long about a puppet show. However, I believe if the show had more focus and was on ITV, I believe the show could be great again. A good effort nonetheless.
