The American (2010)
Boring
I've no idea what the director was trying to achieve with this film. It felt as if scenes were missing and I had no idea what was going on most of the time. A plot would have been a real asset to this film. My time was wasted watching it. I had no sympathy with the character played by George Clooney. He had no redeeming features and looked thoroughly miserable throughout the film. For some reason unknown to viewers, he was targeted by Swedish killers. He took orders from a strange man but chose to ignore some of his orders. He enjoyed sex with prostitutes and we saw a bit too much of that, but I guess the director thought that might be a selling point for the film.
Treadstone (2019)
0 out of 10
A bunch of unlikely disjointed scenarios and no conclusions to any of the different stories. It just stops. No second season. I guess the scriptwriters had planned to expand on the stories in a second season, but really a first season of ten episodes needs some sort of conclusion, otherwise it's not a season, its just a collection of episodes. There is much jumping about in years and continents, probably to distract us from the plot (I use the term loosely) holes. It does look as if money was spent on this production as there are a number of exotic locations but it didn't work, too many different characters and no sense of where it was going. And then it just stopped, part way through the story lines.
Watch something else.
The Responder (2022)
Gripping drama
Excellent drama about a police officer on the edge. We follow him as he tries to juggle with pressures coming at him from all directions - family, colleagues, financial issues, criminal friends and angry drug dealers. Not a relaxing watch! Great performances from all the cast and Martin Freeman, in particular, was superb.
Stay Close (2021)
Confusing, cartoonish and chaotic
I like Coben's writing and I rate a couple of the actors in this - Jumbo and Nesbit- but this programme was just all over the place. The characters and "plot" were not believable. I lost interest in trying to figure out what was going on, I just didn't care what happened. Two episodes was more than enough.
Kiri (2018)
Poor ending
Well acted and an interesting plot but let down by the inconclusive final episode. This happens too often in UK tv dramas - scriptwriters have good ideas for a story but don't know how to reach a satisfactory conclusion.
Scottish Mussel (2015)
Oh dear...
I gave up on this film after about 15 minutes. I stayed with it that long to give it a chance. The final straw was the scene where a young conservation officer stripped to a skimpy bikini, in front of three men whom she did not know. How very unlikely. I realised that the target demographic for the film was pre pubescent boys and I switched off. Up until that point I had endured Harry Enfield's brave attempt at a Scottish accent, a machine gun being used by criminals in the Scottish countryside, a character with a tumescence beneath his clothing and some poor attempts at acting. I'm not sure why Martin Compston chose to appear in this, as it is hardly a boost for his career. I had been looking forward to a Scottish comedy and a few laughs, but I just felt that my intelligence had been insulted by this puerile film.
Summary: Oh dear...
I Care a Lot (2020)
Well acted comedy
I enjoyed all the performances in this very well made comedy thriller. The premise of the story is quite horrifying and some of the characters are monsters but believable ones. I liked that two of the characters were in a lesbian relationship and this was treated as a straight relationship would have been and not used for titillation. Great fun, I really enjoyed the film. (I don't understand what all the negatives reviews are about at all.)
Lightning (2021)
Great fun!
This is a pacy game show with six different elimination rounds, including a physical challenge. The host is the excellent comedian Zoe Lyons and she brings humour and banter to the show without ever being cruel to the contestants. It's an exciting format. A very enjoyable and fun show to watch.
Provenance (2017)
Oh dear
I watched this after checking it's score here. Hmm, big mistake. I don't know who gave the high ratings but I suspect they have never actually seen a good film. This is rubbish. It's obvious where it is heading and it's tasteless. The points are for the French setting which was welcome in these times of Covid. I recommend that you watch something else, Something with a plot, good dialogue and no plot holes. Also as a bit of advice, if you enter into a relationship with someone, ask them about themselves. The characters in this film forgot to do that. Oops.
La trêve (2016)
Aaagh
Why did I watch this? I had a vague memory of the first season but had forgotten about the unusual mental health issues of the hero. This is dreadful. It could have been a good crime drama in a scenic location. The ghost ruined that. The three points are for the Ardennes.
The Sister (2020)
Rubbish
Don't waste your time with this. No point in it. No conclusion. I regret the wasted hours.
