John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023)
Bewickered
Yes, I tried to make a pun out of the word "Bewildered" because this film seems like it tried to do just that- make a pun out of the actual John wick films. The first was undoubtedly the best- it was simple, realistic, unintentionally humourous and had a very clear goal. Then, it became a little over the top in the third, especially when he visited the elder and wanted to remain alive just so he "could remember her".
Huh.
Anyway, I had high expectations walking into the fourth instalment because I do love this franchise. However, it was far too much. The action sequences were shot well and choreographed fantastically but it was unrealistic even for a made believe world. Unless that was what they were going for? More of a Marvelesque/graphic 300 and Sin City- Zac Snyder type vibe? It was no doubt beautiful in terms of Sets, costumes and cinematography and ok, really do have to hand it to the stunt and action choreography team.. if there was an Oscar's category for stunts and fights, they will take it.
Unfortunately, no amount of ornaments are going to save a movie with a lack of story. The acting here and dialogue delivery is pretty weak... I was also confused with the motivation. I understand Winston and John's friendship but then again, why is he so hell bent on surviving? John hates the trade, he's out then he's in, then he's in with such a goal to survive but for what reason? So then he's back in and wanting to die ...with honour? It seems out of character to want to get people he cares about involved and die for him and he doesn't even know why he wants to live so bad and run from the high table ... then later, he's in the game again to take revenge for his Japanese friend but then doesn't end up avenging him in the end, the guys daughter had to do it herself. Look, I want to say something prolific and sound like a great movie critic but I'm not. So I'm going to just jump in here into the sea of 9s and perfect 10 reviews and hope I can land like John wick after rolling down 20 flights of stairs and not die.
I actually went into micro sleep at the 2hr mark because it was too much action. I know, it's crazy. But I woke up because an old couple had to pass me as they were walking out. They shook their heads, I think they were ready for some quiet tea and snacks.
Hey, you know what peeves me, is that john travels from Osaka to new York then to some other paris and no one kills him on the plane or even the airport? In air, there's no where to go, they would defo be able to kill him in the airplane toilet of even disguise as a hot flight attendant and spike his drink. Also, the blind guy is better than so many other assassins... also, they used the same freaking dog antics as Halle berry but with a black guy that's randomly introduced for fan service or something. Also, i totally saw it coming at the end, as if John will kill Donnie yen. But then they went back to the black guy while he's sitting there drinking beer with his dog and he's like "that was good/smart" and I'm like "whut, no it's nhat".
And like if you love your dog, you wouldn't be feeding it beer.. hello?
Then also, John fell from buildings and got shot up and is almost immortal. But at the end he just dies from a gunshot wound in his liver with no will to live. He says "Winston, take me home", then Winston is like "yea ok". But he doesn't even run after him, he just lets John walk down the steps and he dies. But like now he has no will to live? I thought his goal was to live to remember her. If anything, this should've happened in John wick 2, where he gives in after avenging his puppy and getting his car back, then should lie in the sunset to die and reunite with Helen.
Argh but nope he "dies". But then the Lionsgate production team realised what a hit this installment was and decides to do a number 5 and 6. So I guess John faked his death and then now comes out of hiding wants to avenge Donnie Yen or the Samurai dude, then they introduce jet li or Jackie Chan and omg it's going to be real Expendables type thing, brainless popcorn flick where everyone just fights real good fight scenes with explosions and falls, fire, snow ice and stuff, lots of injuries, cuts, bloods, 10000 stunt extra deaths, but the main guys limp but still fight with 100% blows and no one dies. Then the ending finally the bad guy has a real dramatic death with flowers and slow music and then John wick is like struggling but saves the day and says "yeah".
Ok rant over. Oh well, guess i will watch John wick 5 anyway just to see how bad it is. Lol.
Chris Rock: Selective Outrage (2023)
Chris Rock isn't the Rock
Thank you Netflix for giving us this special!! It was all over the news and highly anticipated; so my expectations were pretty high. Finally got to tune in this evening in Australia and was not disappointed. I don't usually watch Chris rock's standups but will have to check them our after this. I am a huge fan of Dave Chapelle and I can see why they're great friends.
Selective outrage touches on the current issues of "attention seeking" behaviour and smartly approaches sensitive topics using references to popular culture. I don't want to reveal too much and leave it to your own judgement upon viewing!
Just a heads up that there are comments that aren't politically correct, vulgarities and moments gasp worthy- so if you don't like content as such, please give this a miss. I don't want another good comedian to be cancelled so do stay away. But for those looking for someone to tell it like it is, honesty (even if you don't agree) and a good laugh, then this is for you!
And of course, the others who just want to hear about the will smith incident, you can stay till the very end. It's worth it!
Thank you Chris rock for not victimising yourself and coming out stronger by using humour to deal with your difficult experience and fuel it for your career!
Cunk on Earth (2022)
Cunk is a hilarious cun*
I saw this on Netflix and gave it a go as I enjoyed Diane Morgan's performance on Afterlife. First five minutes hooked me ! It gets even better as it goes on, she narrates it in a David Attenborough/documentary host type fashion but if you pay attention to what she says, it'll have you howling in laughter. Please turn the subtitles on so you don't miss the great comedic writing. Her perspective may seem stupid yet if you thought about it, it's quite plausible someone would think of they took things at face value (if that makes sense). It's very intelligent the way this series has been crafted- it's to educate in history but with humour which is the best way as it gets you to listen and Lean in. It's light but heavy at the same time. It is done in an Ali G/Sasha baron cohen production style with a wee bit of Monty python influences. Whoever wrote this is a genius and Diane delivers flawlessly. I watched the entire series then repeated it and it was even funnier. I can imagine a Ricky Gervais watching this and the laugh track in my head is his cackling. Kudos to all the experts who participated in this too and kept a straight face. 100% giving this 10/10!
Cocaine Bear (2023)
"Is he on coke?"
This Movie is absolutely hilarious. I had no idea what to expect, I just saw the poster and went "oh yeah, I wonder if it really is a bear on cocaine or just a metaphor". Didn't watch any trailers or read about it, my dad and I just winged it and boy am I glad we did. It was funny, well acted, so stupid but at the same time, highly entertaining and we walked away thinking that it was actually, a very plausible situation! It is a great escape from the many politically correct films of today or films that try to be something it's not. It's a fun filled ride, go in, switch your brain off and enjoy.
Bill Burr Presents: Friends Who Kill (2022)
Wow
That was really bad.
I don't even know the right string of words to put in this review to describe how cringeworthy and unenjoyable that special was. I saw "Bill Burr" and was SO excited because I love his stand ups, but this was an utter disappointment.. it had big shoes to fill though as I had just watched Ricky Gervais' Supernature.
If you're in doubt, tune in and vent here later.
If you believe mine and the other similar reviews, good on you, save your time and give this a miss.
Dexter: New Blood: Sins of the Father (2022)
What.
I have never written a review before but my disappointment is so overwhelming, I have to unleash it somehow in hopes that the creator or writers of this show reads our outrage. I am an avid fan of Dexter, the trinity killer, Isaac sirko, ice truck killer- there's so much to love about this series. Then came season 8's finale which was so awful and didn't do justice to Dexter and Deb's character arcs over the many years we bad the privilege to follow. When I heard there was a season 9, I was SO excited because I thought "hah, they're going to try redeeming themselves for the last episode". Boy was season 9 a ride, it was so so great up until... the end. A bad ending almost ruins everything about a series, it could have a bad start but a good end and it still makes it worth it. Needless to say, the ending of this season which serves to be very concrete about Dexter's legacy and fate, was awful. It was rushed, badly written and didn't make sense to all the character development of this particular storyline. How Harrison flipped is completely unbelievable after yearning for connection which his father all these years then seeing and understanding what he does.
I will be so mad if they made a spin off with Harrison and Dexter as his conscience, boy would that be very annoying.
WHY!!!? *face palm*
The Social Dilemma (2020)
Watch this documentary NOW
This documentary was an extreme eye opener and scared me tremendously. I am constantly irritated about heads bogged down on trains, on streets, at malls, cafes, everywhere pretty much! And it scares me all the time to see people so addicted to their devices and refreshing their social media apps but this documentary made me realise how much more serious this societal issue is.. I really really hope this documentary spreads as fast as "bad or fake news" and that more people become aware and conscious of this detrimental element to humanity. Please recommend and share after you watch it too. I wish this came out years ago but it's not too late to bring awareness.
