Bad Girl (2016)
Have time to kill?
This is one of those flicks you would not want to pay to see, but for free if you can't sleep one night and there are no commercial interruptions... maybe. Always hard to create horror comedy as this one clearly shows. Even so I was not kicking myself at the end for 1 1/2 hours totally wasted. Don't watch or refuse to watch because of an alleged "gay" angle. There is NO real angle to this, just somewhat tolerable entertainment. Mainly I just found myself enjoying Weaving, though there was nothing noteworthy about her character or performance. Is there anything great or even good in this entire endeavor? Not really, but I still found myself mildly entertained on a sleepless night at 3 am. Can't claim I was totally coherent, but not under the influence of anything other than natural grogginess.
Escape the Field (2022)
LMAO, at the good reviews.
The good reviews are far more entertaining than the flick, but that's not saying much. Everybody is familiar with pretentious individuals who love to wax poetic about something any sensible person would simply recognize as not worth his/her time. These are the types who see deep meaning in human feces smeared on a canvas and will create mindless metaphors for all the ills of society in what is nothing more than crap smeared on a canvas. The people giving this crap flick rave reviews are the same, believing they are perceptive and refined individuals, standing above the simple minded proles who will never appreciate complex thought. They suffer from severe overt lack of self esteem or possibly have a vested interest in the sale of the crap. I always imagine the "artists" and purveyors of such BS laughing their asses off as they head to the bank with the sucker's easy to come by cash. Want to spend what seems like 3 hours feeling stupid?! Watch this to the very end including the credits. Does it explain itself then?! Yes, but the conclusion is still crap. Sequels with more expansive explanations in the offing? Probably, given the mediocrity many in our society today are all to ready to accept as legit entertainment. Real corn maze snoozer. Watch for "Field: The Return" or "Corny Escape III" coming soon.
Evolution (2001)
Made it through on the third try.
I made it through 35 minutes on first viewing, another 10 minutes on the second, and finished it about 6 months after my first try. A bit of a snoozer with some decent alien effects. If you are into effects and don't care about a disjointed script or decent comedy you will make it through on the first viewing. They never decided to go all out for comedy on the transition from serious sci-fi. It could have been much better if real comedy writers had taken some time to come up with a few hilarious setups and lines. While I never thought Ghostbusters was great, people who put this in the same basic category "quality wise" are way off IMHO. A 5 may be a bit generous.
Brazil (1985)
Prescient brilliance!
If this is not the greatest movie ever made it is in the top 5. The relevance of this gem is greater and greater each year, especially to those who have suffered through the last 32+ years of American "Government" and its continuing Big Brother nightmare. There are those who simply don't get it due to the quirky nature, but I urge everyone to watch the Criterion Collections (the 3 disk 480p DVD has the most content but the print on the Blu-Ray is better) and view the different versions to understand all that Gilliam went through to realize this epic achievement. Even though it probably would have still been a flop at the box office I really wish he had managed to obtain the budget he originally wanted. It would have made an awesome film beyond spectacular. My only nit picky complaints don't detract from the genius or lower the rating from a solid 10/10. As always there are a few continuity errors, but nothing major. While most of the modeling was incredible I wish the chase scene had a more realistic aspect to it. I think the only weak casting link in the film was the choice of Kim Greist as Jill though her acting performance was admirable. She just didn't quite fit perfectly with the magical meshing of the rest of the cast, and their flawless off the wall and very memorable characterizations throughout. I have seen this film more times than I can even remember. I watch it at least every couple of years just to pick up on Gilliam's prescience foretelling even more events from real life. While Gilliam has some other significant films to his credit every film maker has one that stands out and this is not only his greatest achievement but an example of how important and influential a truly monumental film can be. I pity those who write this off as just a "weird" or "all too British" style romp. Also the descriptions (even from the studio) that this is some Sci-Fi tale of a dystopian future must have missed the opening which clearly states "Somewhere in the 20th Century" as it is a brilliant parody of our lives today. I wish there was a version of 1984 which even came close to the brilliance of this masterpiece and hope that some day soon before it is illegal and all copies of Orwell have been burned that someone could do that book justice with a comparable cinematic achievement. For all who did not understand this movie I urge you to watch the director's cut without interruption. Never view any version of this on TV as it has most likely been butchered and commercials are forbidden. Worship Gilliam, the crew, and cast of this forever relevant film.
Moontrap: Target Earth (2017)
Really?
Unlikely even Sarah Butler junkies will find this watchable, with the possible exception of the few seconds she changes into a skimpy red outfit. Sci-Fi fans will find nothing of value here, not even the pitiful attempt at special effects. Strange when you see a sequel to a film (Moontrap) that was also pretty bad, but as usual comes off even (in this case MUCH) worse. As someone who often gets a kick out of really bad flicks (especially Sci-Fi) this one can't qualify in that category. Hard to believe this one ever had a chance and you have to wonder how this acquired ANY financing, though there couldn't have been much. Maybe it was an attempt to lose money a la "The Producers."
