Hua Jiang Hu Zhi Ling Zhu (2015)
Quite different Anime
First episode I thought it was the average Wuxia story but then it became an Anime of the likes I had not seen before. Gross, absurd, funny, with a lot of action and also some R-rated talk it made me wonder more than once if it was really Chinese, as you don't see similar productions these days. Alas, I found out that this Anime (or Donghua as is the proper name) was made before the big clamp down in 2019 of all things considered "immoral". Interesting story with twist and turns that you don't see coming. More Martial arts fantasy than Wuxia but still......They made a movie out of this but that one is kind of boring and PG-14. So all in all a rare treat here!
La chica de nieve (2023)
Great, grim series
I feel compelled to write this review after reading here quite a few negative ones. What one can clearly see right away is that apparently none of the dismissive reviewers has ever been to Spain, and certainly not to Malaga. Newsflash: It rains in Spain too, and it gets sometimes cold and gloomy in Winter as well. The creators of this series are not trrying to imitate Scandinavian crime series. After all ,bad stuff happens in Spain too. And no, people there don't "mumble" Spanish, they speak it the way the are used to. After all, this is the country where the Spanish language comes from. And talking about "telenovelas"? Seriously?
Anyway, great actors, also, as usual with European productions they don't pull any punches and the story is absolutely believable. Worse things you can read about in the news. 6 episodes is quite right, no need to stretch it to 12 or so, and the last minute leaves the door open to a second season. And why not? All in all, a good showing of a different side of life in Spain with all its quirks and pecularities.
Peacemaker (2022)
What's with the dirty jokes?
I got so tired of this whole "different type of Super Hero" thing that seems to be in vogue now that initially I didn't want to watch this. Then I saw the high rating, that made me curious. Waste of time! Just another series for "The Boys" crowd which, judging from the 9 and 10 star reviews, are fully on board for this one. That should tell you everything.....
You Fei (2020)
Utter disappointment
I am just shaking my head at the 10 star reviews here for this drama. There are so many Chinese fantasy dramas that are way better than this. I am not sure what happened during the production of this series. The main actress Zhao Li Ying seems to not be too much invested in her role. Worse, the fight scenes are boring and awkwardly staged unlike say Sword Dynasty. There is no romance so to speak of, unlike Bloody Romance that achieved much more with a smaller budget. The story is a bore, unlike say The Rise of Phoenixes and there is no interest in the characters here, unlike say Ever Night. Series like this one, and the ridiculous 10 star reviews, are doing a disservice to the other many good Chinese productions that strive to find a wider public in the West.
San Guo ji mi zhi qian long zai yuan (2018)
What a drama should be
I was intrigued by the premise of an alternative version of what happened in the time of the Three Kingdoms in China. The excellent story made me forget what really went on during that time. This is not your typical Chinese Palace drama, there is a lot going on between the protagonists, inside and outside the palaces. Good battle and fight scenes too, intermingled with real historical details. The actors and actresses did a commendable job, they really did choose the appropriate ones for their roles. In fact, one does almost forget that they are acting, that's how good they are. Last but not least it's always a pleasure to watch the stunning beauty of Regina Wan.
Fist & Furious (2019)
Overlooked Gem
Wow, this movie was quite a surprise. Saw it advertised on Viki, thought might check it out. I am glad I did. Good story, believable characters and the amazing fight scenes. I didn't think that I could see anything new when it comes to hand to hand fighting scenes, but I was wrong. The other viewers liked the movie as well, as I could see from the reviews on the website.
I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020)
Pretentious, that's all.
I already sensed this would be a 2 hours plus waste of my time, when I read a popular reviewer calling the Mulan movie boring but saying that this movie is a masterpiece. Yep, I was right. I really, really like "weird" and "different" movies. I have no problem with subtitles either and generally enjoy watching films that are for a minority. But this movie is an insult. It screams "Read the book, please, then you will understand it". Well, that defeats the purpose, I think, if I have to read the book before or after the film. Why would I watch the movie then? Like another reviewer says here, "this is a film for critics". They of course, without almost any exception, puff up this movie because they think it's great. But for the rest of us, it's just a sorry example of how resources can be wasted in this age for the purpose of...what?
Away (2020)
Don't watch something you know you won't like
Wow, I expected quite a few negative reviews, but so many? I knew that because this is a series where women run the show (no pun intended), all the guys who always have a problem with movies/series where women are the strong characters or heroes would automatically give 1 or 2 star reviews. Of course, these same people rush breathlessly to exalt adolescent crap like "The Boys" as best series ever. So no need to really waste time on them. Then they are the ones who complain that its' not a Sci-Fi series but a rather "emotional" or "love story" series, with almost no action. Indeed it is and that's also what the Netflix description says. I don't watch Zombie movies expecting "John Wick", that's also why I don't review them. So for the rest of us who want to see something that makes one think and ponder about what a truly long-distance love relationship is and the consequences of it, this is a pretty decent offering. And no, it's not a "PC" show. The "white" age is over, get used to it.
After Midnight (2019)
What was that?
That's what I thought when I finished watching this movie. I couldn't believe the ending, the so-called climax that everything was pointing to. Worst ever. Was that a joke? Was this movie a proof of concept? Showing to some investors that they can make a movie? For 80 minutes, nothing happens, really nothing. I thought any moment there will be a twist or something, no. Then when they show the "monster" I was astonished. Any monster disguise at a kid's party is scarier then that! I think now that the whole movie was just a joke, a joke on us the spectators. Must be...
Utopia (2013)
A lot of food for thought
Yes, it is kind of weird. Also, most scenes are almost clinical in their detachment to what is shown, as if someone is looking at the whole thing with very cold eyes. That makes the story even more brutal. Things happen and there is no hero or heroine showing up in the last moment, a la Hollywood. Definitely a show only for adults, not only because the violence is sometimes a bit over the top, but also because of the black humor. Sometimes it gets crazy, sometimes funny or just weird, but that creates the appeal of series like this one. As I write this the Corona Virus is spreading worldwide, that fact amplifies the story (that has to do among other things with deadly viruses) and makes everything look bleak. Of course, just a coincidence, watching the episodes at this time, with everything that is shown in the news......Anyway, a quite different series that keeps you in its thrall until the very last minute.
Watchmen (2019)
Another great HBO series
Apparently many people don't get what's going on here, namely that it's a continuation of the influential 1986 graphic novel, not a remake. So what is the problem? Don't like that it's mostly about and with black people? Hey, it has atmosphere, interesting characters, an intelligent script, good music and great production values. I mean, look at the other super hero series that were made over the years, you would think that 95% of the world population is white. It was about time for a change! If you liked Westworld, The Leftovers or Legion, then watch this.
The End of the F***ing World (2017)
They should have left it at Season one
The near constant background music ruined it for me. What is the reason for song after song? Are they afraid that the viewers will run away otherwise? Or do they think that people will find the show boring otherwise? Pretty sad state of affairs if the producers think their main audience, young people, won't stay around too long without appealing to their presumed hyperactive minds. Anyway, apart from all this, it's still a fun (in a certain way), and different series. But just like with so many other shows, like Stranger Things, they want the milk the cow as long as possible. It just doesn't work. If you are over 35, watch season one and move on.
Lie chang (2017)
Finally a decent TV drama from China
A solid script, great actors/actresses, great production values, showing real people with real issues and problems. A very welcome change to the usual fare that is, and has been, Chinese TV series where either the male or the female leads are just horrible spineless wimps, interjected with unrealistic scenes that make any person that has been for a while in China cringe. My Chinese friends and I agree, this is a drama that makes you just want to binge watch it!
Paul Blart: Mall Cop (2009)
If they say it is funny,it has to be funny.
This is another one of those "comedy light" movies, where basically you can see all the funny moments in the trailer.Just like "Nacho libre" they put a more or less funny actor in a movie with what looks like a more or less funny premise. Then the average person sees the trailer, hears about the story, recognizes the actor and immediately thinks:"Wow,this must be really funny". "XXX as a wrestler in Mexico, can you believe this?" Or "XXX as a security guard in a ....Mall! Ha,ha,ha,ha". That is what the producers count on and that is what the average moviegoer in the US will go for! I totally agree with Jlayman920 in this.
Journal of a Contract Killer (2008)
A breeze of fresh air in the movie landscape
From the comments that I see on this board,it seems that some people have a problem with anything that is not the "usual" Hollywood fare. This movie kept me on my seat for the duration of it.I could name a few "big budget" movies where after a 20 minutes I felt like getting up and having a beer. "Journal of a contract killer" is quite remarkable, meaning that with a very good story, some unknown actors and the right director you can create something to remember. That's quite an achievement nowadays where just the marketing budget of some truly horrible movies (that you watch once and never again),mostly coming from, where else, the USA,is more than the budget for this movie.Well, enough said,I will recommend this movie to all my friends.
