I Came By (2022)
Spoiler alert- it's like a movie version of the goosebumps book
I can only assume the actors were asked to "act as urban as possible. Try as hard as possible to talk like poor people".
Ok so filmmaking allows you some creative freedom. But shutting down someone's alarm system by turning off the wifi? Who okayed that?
Maybe the same person that said "hey- let's get an Indian family who want their son to be a a doctor. Authentic enough? No? Ok how about their daughter gets knocked up by a black guy, so the parents throw her out the house. " ... I mean straight off the bat, not even 30 mins into the film they're stacking clichés like pancakes
No offense but I can only assume the filmmaker is dead inside, as are his target audience. So if nothing else, at least no sentient beings were harmed in making this movie.
Living on One Dollar (2013)
Pretty insightful but perhaps a wasted opportunity
I'll start with some positives- it was insightful to see how the locals live, and their daily struggles. A completely different way of material living, even though we all have the same fundamental human needs and aspirations.
Some negatives- I felt the guys were quite naïve and underprepared. A lot of the "profound" things they learned were really obvious, and not at all fleshed out by the format or execution of their experiment. A longer stint, involving real subsistence farming or laboring could have provided more context. Just starving themselves on bananas and beans couldn't possibly achieve much.
Nevertheless, it was reasonably entertaining to watch and I'm glad they mixed well with the local population and spent time telling their stories. I particularly found it interesting how there was a real community and family spirit that is dying in modem consumer society so it was good that this was highlighted by this short documentary...
Tubelight (2017)
Despite its limitations, this movie can save the world...
Having been extremely underwhelmed by the trailer, I decided to watch this movie since my expectations were rock bottom. My expectations were so low, in fact, that the movie could only disappoint me if I suffered a stroke during the viewing and died. Having watched the film, I can tell you now that I wish I did have a stroke, it would've been far more pleasant than watching this calamity.
That being said, I'm sure this movie will be a huge financial success- such is the new low of Bollywood. And in this, the last nail in the Bollywood coffin, we see a steroid jacked 50 year old playing the part of a mentally disabled man-child, in a movie brazenly copied from an English title.
I gave this film 2 stars because despite its limitations as a movie, I can see it being effective as a method of torture. Prisoners in Guantanamo would sooner gouge out their own eyeballs using spoons laced in chili oil, than watch this movie. To that end, it may have its uses yet.
