Always Be My Maybe (2019)
Warm, moving, funny rom-com
Some funny gags, some warmth, well-acted, lovely film.
Not sure about the compatibility of the leads; they start more 'friend zone' but that's the only weakness.
Well worth watching.
The Lovebirds (2020)
Very funny moments
Ok, 4 very, very funny scenes and 5 pretty funny moments. The 'what I call his penis' gag was a big 10/10.
For a comedy; this is a 7/10.
Plot is rather light and runs out of steam. Some glaring logical inconsistencies.
Obviously low budget.
Acting splendid, eve the small parts.
I'd love to see this cast with a bigger budget and more developed script.
Up There (2011)
Warm, gentle, funny & moving
Beautifully acted, nice story that looks sympathetically at people and asks a few questions that it lets you answer, if you wish. It is also beautifully shot with nicely framed views of the sea and ordinary lives. Draws you in to its pace and little world. Much as I like "Knight and Day" (and I do), watch this rather than a second viewing of that.
Mindhorn (2016)
Well acted, good story, sparky script but...
I have very low comedy standards, I'm old, I'm a man, I'm white, I'm English,I love everyone in this; I must be the target audience. Others have described the plot, it's a good idea and works well, everyone in it is convincing and acts very well. The big problem for me is that it just isn't laughing-style funny; it's sad funny but not in the subtle and heartfelt way that Alan Partridge or David Brent are.
I enjoyed it but don't go thinking it'll make you chuckle much.
