Fear the Walking Dead: You're Still Here (2019)
Worst Episode of FTWD
I actually really love this series and just got back into watching it after taking a long break and going back to finish the original TWD, anyway 'm here now and this episode made me wish I never came back. That's a joke, first half of this season was great but this episode was also, a joke. Anyway, this Wes dude cares so much about his book that he's hunting down this guy and lying to Alicia and strand to get to him, he then finishes him off later and completely kills him just to say nah... I don't really want it. The only way this would make sense is if we end up finding out he didn't really want the book and had another reason for killing that guy which, fair enough if so, but it was done so horribly and I don't think that's what's gonna end up happening. Also, from the second Alicia decided she didn't want to kill the dead anymore I audibly said "oh please not this crap again." Especially when their entire purpose right now is going around helping people, every zombie you kill is one that can't hurt someone else, why in the world would you not want to kill them? I could see if from the very beginning you made a decision for whatever reason to not kill any but to go from zombie assassin to pacifist overnight is just strange. Anyway, I could let it slide if it wrapped up in a nice and somewhat poetic or clever way but again... nah. She just needed to paint a tree, that's all. She wasn't chasing the person painting the trees because they inspired her, she simply needed the paint so she could paint a tree and go back to killing zombies. LOL this episode was so bad, and I really do love this show and will finish the entire thing gladly but they do themselves no favors with episodes like this. Oh wait, just remembered, Logan has no idea where these oil fields are that his own partner knew about, but he can find a random bank vault in the middle of nowhere that Al and Morgan went into because this whole thing is "bigger than we realize." Ughh, I'm done, let's just hope for better writing going forward.
Your Honor (2020)
Could've been more.
I enjoyed the 2 seasons I saw of this show but it didn't blow me away like I kept thinking it was about to. This entire show for me felt like it was building towards some major revelation and sequence of events that would really propel it into another level and make all of the slow methodical build up worth it but, it never really did. I will say that season one was actually fairly incredible independently. And I really enjoyed watching it, however, its downhill from there. It really could've ended after the first season, the second season seems like most of it was just trying to set up bigger more important storylines for the future in later seasons, but learning that the show had been canceled after the second seasons makes it all completely useless. I would recommend watching the first season and leaving it at that. The second season is irrelevant unless you're really interested in the "Eugene Jones" character and how his story plays out. At the end of the day I truly did enjoy the 2 seasons we got of "Your Honor" more than a 6/10 rating suggests, but there were so many characters I wanted to see shine more, so many stories and directions I was patiently waiting to see the show go, so many opportunities for some great storytelling, that we'll never get to see now. So all of those wasted opportunities make me keep it at a 6. It was good, but could have and would have been way better.
Knock at the Cabin (2023)
The Ultimate Decision
Everyone is going to go into this movie and know what to expect, for many you may even be very close to 100% accurately predicting what's going to happen from scene to scene. That's the beauty of this movie for me, it simply does not matter.
From beginning to end the acting in this film is absolutely phenomenal, with Dave Bautista leading the way with probably the most lifelike character of his career. Everyone else was a touch behind him but that is certainly not a discredit, he was just that good. The others were just slightly less than perfect I'd say, and maybe only in comparison to him.
This definitely is not a horror movie, it's hard for me to even really look at it as a thriller. I don't exactly know which genre I would put it in, I just know I love it.
It felt real, people reacted the way you would expect them to react to this situation, on both sides. The emotion and passion was palpable, and it grabbed my attention so easily by making me really care and hope for the best outcome for everyone involved. It then quickly gives you the idea that, that's not likely to be the case.
There was one "twist" that I don't think was needed, but it wasn't a huge deal and technically added another layer to the mental torture of understanding what was happening for the characters. It didn't impact me enough to not give this movie a 10, but I personally wouldn't have included it.
All in all, I came into this film expecting something, and got exactly that, and more thanks to the absolutely incredible acting. It is fairly straightforward but there was really no reason for it not to be. I would suggest this movie to literally anybody, but especially if you are a fan of apocalyptic stories, I would be willing to bet quite a lot that you will enjoy this.
Den skyldige (2018)
Simply Brilliant
One of those movies that takes place in the same room (well technically 2 rooms but same building) the entire time. Reminds me of phone booth where all of the story comes from dialogue over the phone as you wait to see how a very tense situation is going to unfold. The level of story they are able to get with this entire film taking place in a call center over the phone, is simply amazing. The story is good and keeps you entertained and engaged the entire time. You find yourself rooting for certain characters and feeling attached to them and over the course of the movie things tend to get twisted around that make you think a little deeper about things. There are so many tense moments where you can really put yourself in the shoes of the officer because the storytelling through the audio alone coming through the phone is absolutely brilliant. The sounds tell a story almost better than words or pictures can, and you just get so tense sitting there waiting for the next sound que to confirm your suspicions or relieve your stress, but not being there to see it is so thrilling and nerve-wracking and it really has you feeling at times like you are the one in that call center talking to these people. I loved this movie, couldn't recommend it enough, you will not waste your time.
Barbarians (2021)
What you see is what you get
Honestly, it's exactly what you should expect. My favorite thing about it is that they actually do a decent job of boring you so much that you don't expect anything to happen and then very quickly something happens in a major way, it's pretty thrilling in the moment. The problem is that the thrill last for maybe 15 minutes and after that it's just as much of a mess as the beginning was. The super long boring build up was cool when I thought it was going to lead into the epic 2nd half of the movie, but it did not do that at all. Instead, I feel like I was forced to sit there and watch 2 couples have a meal and joke with each other for 40 minutes for absolutely no reason. Like I said you get about 15 minutes of on the edge of your seat exciting stuff and almost as soon as it begins you learn that nobody in this movie is to be taken seriously and at the snap of a finger it becomes very dull again. I wanted to give it a 5 because like I said it was pretty much what I expected, and it did hold my attention long enough for me to finish it. However, I downgraded to a 4 simply because it actually could have been really good if they either didn't waste so much time in the beginning or executed the 2nd half of the movie better. They needed to hold the tensity longer and give the viewer more time to ponder and digest the situation. So, the fact that I think it was so close to being a lot better actually makes me like it even less, but hey, I wouldn't call it a waste of time I just could never see myself recommending that someone watch this, it feels like such a letdown by the time you finish.
The Pale Blue Eye (2022)
Great acting with a dull story
This movie has a very good setting and the atmosphere is very well done, it is a realistically designed and built world. The acting was wonderful although you really only get to know the main character and slightly so at that. Everyone else has rather minimal meaning which can be expected but for this film I feel it would've been better to have been introduced to some of the supporting characters a bit more. The story is rather dull up until the end where I was legitimately surprised but not necessarily because of some genius twist but more so because it just wasn't needed at all. It does make sense in the end so I can't complain too much, I would've preferred a different route though. All in all, it's an enjoyable movie that is very easy on the eyes. It would've benefited from cutting some of the nonsense out and being a shorter movie because at its current length it feels like there's some things they wanted to do but didn't have time, leading those things to feel very rushed and incomplete. For example, the main love interest of the movie was puzzling at best. This movie may very well deserve more than a 7 from a pure filmmaking standpoint, but I simply rate and review based on how much I enjoyed watching, and a 7 is still fairly strong.
Clean (2021)
Brody being Brody
This is a pretty basic film with a story we've seen a thousand times, but it is done well. Brody always portrays his characters very well and this one was no different. The movie can be slow at times but for the most part it keeps pace just fine, you aren't left waiting ages to see what's gonna happen next. If you go into this movie expecting some kind of blockbuster amazing movie then you will certainly be disappointed. This is an easy movie to watch to kill 90 minutes and watch a satisfying sequence of events. There's some revenge story to it, some redemption story, and even the good old good vs bad with a little bit of which is which mixed in. It's pretty cool for what it is, almost like a more gritty discounted john wick which isn't too bad.
The Watcher (2022)
One of the most bingeworthy shows I've seen lately
I watched the entire season in a day, I honestly could not help myself but to find out what happened next, it was incredible. I see a lot of people leaving negative reviews because the ending did not give any closure, however the show has been renewed for a 2nd season so that is simply the ending of a season, not the show/full story. I fell in love with this show very quickly, the acting is great and all of the characters have something going on to make them feel real and keep you connected to them. It's very good at being mysterious and they throw a lot of twists and turns at you, so much so that some of the twists turn out not even being real and in my opinion that was a great thing to do as it keeps you guessing and is not plagued by cringey predictability that makes a lot of shows today less enjoyable. I had a ton of fun trying to feel like a detective and piece together information to try and figure out was going on and let me tell you, it's no easy task. I'm super excited for season 2, they have created such a giant potential for an amazing payoff when the truth behind everything is finally revealed.
Troll (2022)
What You Expect
I gotta be honest I'm a huge fan of giant mythical creatures (King Kong, Godzilla, etc..) and as soon as I seen the preview image of troll, I went to go watch it for that alone. With that being said, it's pretty much what you would expect it to be. There is no riveting story or tons of action or anything at all really to keep you super connected. The best part of the movie outside of the actual troll for me was Gard Eidsvold as Tobias and we didn't even get a lot of him in this film. I think this a great movie to watch with your kids or if you're like me and can be easily entertained by giant creatures then you can even give it a go yourself and probably have a decent time. In summary, like I said it was exactly what I expected from it and didn't really need to be much more, it's fine for what it is.
Get Out (2017)
Don't Know What Else I Could Want
I was late to see this and I was certainly missing out. It was just incredible. From the beginning of the movie you have questions and suspicions but don't get enough evidence to confirm anything. Then slowly but surely it starts to unwind but is still so mysterious and riveting that you're locked in. Daniel Kaluuya was super fun to watch as always, and the family play their part amazingly. Part of the reason I waited so long to watch this I because I thought it would end up being cliche or that it would go off rails in a number of ways that would've lost my interest but nope, didn't happen. From start to finish I was very intrigued and anticipating the next move. Kaluuya's character is by far one of the easiest to root for in any movie I've seen, and the comedy that they slip in is subtle enough to not change the feel of the movie but genuinely makes you laugh. I loved the whole thing so it's a 10 from me.
The Invitation (2022)
Not Scary, But Enjoyable
I was surprised by the tone of this movie since I saw it classified as a horror and it was definitely not that. I wasn't really looking for a horror though I just clicked on it on Netflix and let it unfold into whatever it was going to be. For me that was a fairly enjoyable story with enough twist and turns that weren't extremely predictable to keep me interested. All of the characters were enjoyable, and the acting was good. I appreciated how parts of the story were connected and things seemed to happen for a reason rather than random events just occurring for the sake of the movie. The main "twist" is sure to catch absolutely nobody by surprise, but it is still executed very well, and it is easy to enjoy the moment for what it is. This movie had just about the right amount of everything for me to enjoy and I really don't have any major complaints. The main character did seem to be a little overpowered at times, but not so much that the movie stopped making sense or being somewhat believable which is big for me in films. It isn't spectacular but it's an easy watch that you won't be left regretting when it's over.
The Menu (2022)
Feels Like 2 Movies in 1 (not in a good way)
The first half of this movie was brilliant. I was on the edge of my seat, and really enjoyed the mysterious aura surrounding everything. I was waiting for the twist to come out and when it did you could tell it was coming but still managed to be shocking and really clicked things into gear, or so I thought. From that point forward everything seemed rather pointless and random. The movie went from feeling like a well done thriller to some type of whacky scary movie 6 type of comedy horror that wouldn't have even been considered good for that type of movie. This film also had one of those characters that for whatever reason they can do no wrong and feel like some type of superhero that comes on out top of every situation with no real logic behind it, they are just the best at everything for no reason and I cannot stand that. By the time I was about 80% through the movie I was annoyed more than anything and was happy it was coming to an end. When the credits hit the only thing I really took away from it was that Ralph Fiennes (Chef Slowik) had an incredible performance. If I was to recommend this movie to someone, I would tell them to watch up until the big twist happens and then turn it off. It would be more enjoyable to use your imagination to finish the rest.
Hell or High Water (2016)
Perfect
I honestly would not change anything about this movie it is absolutely wonderful in my opinion. You get to see the perspective of 2 criminal brothers against 2 ball busting rangers. The relationships between the characters makes this movie what it is, they all feel so real and carry so much weight. I really enjoy the story of the movie, it is simple yet effective and done very well. Everything is believable and it isn't one of those magical movie worlds where actions don't have consequences. I would recommend this movie to anyone looking for something to watch, it will not let you down. Perfect length as well, it is wrapped up exactly when it needs to be and addressing everything it needed to. I simply have no complaints, 10/10!
