Fasten your seat belt. Great suspense and more
19 June 2023
It has been a very long while since last time I 'wowed' a suspense movie, and I am so glad the wait is over. Lost in the Stars takes suspense to the extreme, and even beyond. No matter if you guess it right or not, you will enjoy the process of finding the answer - isn't that suspense all about? With that said, Lost in the Stars has many a twists that lead to a surprise for closure.

The movie started with a missing person case, the wife of the lead character, He Fei (Zhu Yilong), vanished into thin air, during their trip to southeast Asia. He Fei desperately tried to find his wife, and suffered dearly, only to face a stranger (Janice Man) who insisted being his wife. He Fei found himself entangled in a web of plots and conspiracies, or did he really? Of course, there was a second as beautiful woman, Chen Mai (Ni Ni), who was capable of everything, came to rescue, or did she really? So, fasten your seatbelt and you will need it. There will be ups and downs, twists and turns.

Director/producer Chen Sicheng, known for his suspense crime movies, such as Sheep Without a Shepherd, brought forth another classic. For a story following a main character, we have a 50-50 chance of getting it right, for he is most likely either 'innocent' or 'bad'. However, this suspense dug into something deeper than that, taking a serious look at human nature and relationships.

We are often under the impression that suspense movies are mostly 'commercially oriented', acting may not be their 'big thing'. Well, not necessarily. Looking back there were plenty of award-worthy/winning performances in history, just to name a few, Edward Norton in Primal Fear, Kevin Spacey in the Usual Suspect, Nicole Kidman in the Others... - I know, it has been a good while. Again, I am glad the wait is over. For people who know a little bit about Zhu Yilong, you may remember his leading role in Un Certain Regard selected Only the River Flows at Canne Film Festival that just wrapped. It is safe to say he only chooses 'acting-worthy' or 'acting-challenging' characters. He Fei is no exception, if not an 'extreme'. There are many faces of the character, where he was a loving husband, an abused tourist, a doubtful client, a person with a neural disorder, and more, or was he really any of the above? Zhu Yilong gave a convincing performance, not only fully developed, but also multiple layered, for each face this guy had. There was a very difficult facial twitch that likely will be symbolic (you can try to see how difficult it is), however that's only the surface. Human nature's complexity was portrayed with depth and power, that leaves the audience to ponder and reflect.

No matter you are just in for a good thrill, or you look for inspiration and thought provoking complexities, you will enjoy this ride.

Wanted to like it
30 May 2023
I liked most Tom Cruise's movies. I liked Top Gun. However Top Gun Maverick did not work for me. First it is kind of slow. Many years have passed, movies are moving faster, at least action movies. A lot of tribute to the original, a little too much. Second the story is not as captivating. Not sure about other viewers, my attention wondered, especially with sort of similar characters compared to the original. Third, the younger generation characters are not that interesting, cliched, I hate to say. I guess if you have never watched the original and has an average mediocre expectation, you may like it.

As good as the Wicked Man gets
30 May 2023
If you watched John Wick 1-3, you know what to do. If you enjoyed them, likely you will again. At least that's what I did. I turned on my John Wick mode, watching it as a computer game and not taking it slightly for real, and it was up to the expectations.

The legend continued. The plot managed to get simpler but worked out. The cinematography was impressive. Lots of beautiful scenes from Japan and Paris. The bronzed tone with cooler blue or blushed highlights gave pretty visuals, tuning down and contrasting the brutal fighting sequences (which I did have to close my eyes).

Keanu Reeves is as legendary himself. I have watched many of his movies and he does not fail. To be fair there is not too much acting, but the fighting and all are as good as it gets. I watched Donnie Yen for years, great martial art actor. Yeah he probably had some work done to his face but so what. Bravo to both actors, who are doing great fighting scenes at their age of getting close to 60.

Overall as a John Wick fan, the final chapter gave a satisfactory closure. Nicely done.

Good suspense
29 May 2023
This is a good suspense movie. You thought you knew what's going on but it managed to make twists and turns, and in the end a smart surprise. I miss suspense movies like this. They are far and between now, which is why I went back to watch it.

Acting satisfactory. We have see Anthnoy Hopkins playing high IQ mastermind before. Young Ryan Gosling played the arrogant and just as smart lawyer, not too much acting but that's alright.

Worth noting there was a line from a physician character in the movie, commenting on Ryan Gosling's - "So you just keep asking the same question..." - one of my favorite lines.

Overall a good suspense looking back in 2023. Hoping to see more good mysteries.

Surprisingly good

A very good suspense series about a spy couple who also leading the lives of ordinary people as their disguise. Unlike 007, they were not loaded, at all, and had to manage minutes of daily life, their daughter's school, their job, their investment, etc.

Meanwhile they actually did have tasks to accomplish, again with limited resources. Their equipment was shabby however their skills were sharp.

nm343100 played the wife, nicely captured the multiple layers of this complicated character, a diva, a teacher, a mother, a wife and a spy. Besides spy scenes, quite a few family scenes were very touching.

The ending did not meet the expectation, which seems to be a common trend for recent year TV series. Overall Dui Shou is nicely made and worth watching.

An Inspiring and Irresistible Journey
20 May 2023
Only the River Flows followed police investigator Ma Zhe (Zhu, Yilong Yilong Zhu), in the 90s China, trying to solve a murder case, with an "obvious" yet not so convincing suspect, the victim's adopted son, a man with mental illness. The movie developed into a psychological journey that was deeply intense and hard to resist. Intermingled with Ma Zhe's own life struggles, the psychological journey was painted with layers of unbelievable hues and shades, in contrast to the movie's desaturated color theme and tone. Are you saying it takes a crazy man to get a crazy man, literally?

As a neo-film nior, the movie shared many aspects of this genre. It also has absurdism and realism contrasting and complementing each other, just like the seemingly muted everyday life in the 90s which was actually during the turmoil of some of the biggest changes of China.

Bravo to Wei, Shujun Wei Shujun's cinema work, to the accuracy of a small town in 90s China, and to Zhu, Yilong Yilong Zhu's vivid portraying of a middle aged policeman dealing with madness from every aspects of his life.

In my humble opinion, a very special movie and a must-see.

Funny comedy with Awards worthy acting
11 August 2022
Great movie, heart felt and touching. Fast paced with hilarious moments that came naturally. Light hearted story telling but focusing on loss, coping, love and family. Amazing actors. Yilong Zhu pulled off Mo with an awards worthy performance. He changed so much, basically a different person. Very convincing as a rough working class guy at the lowest point of his life. Enyou Yang at her young age played amazingly well. Definitely recommend!

Expected a lot more
25 October 2021
Denzel Washington, Jared Leto, Rami Malek. Do I need to say more? Almost the first new movie watched after the start of CoVid.... Man that's all you got? Appreciate the great cast and their efforts. I think acting still solid, Leto and Washington. There might be some deep thoughts I missed, but at that time in 2021, I just wanted to watch a movie with a good story...

Great movie
25 October 2021
Great movie. Another good performance from Ricardo Darín. Gastón Pauls did well too. Started a rough day and managed to get worse, and worse. Each turn grabbed me and made me feel for them. But in an entertaining way, with enough bitterness to think deeper about human nature. Just the right amount. Some parts reminded me of Sting and Dirty Rotten Scandals.

Great visual, great music
25 October 2021
Went to the theater for Michelle Yeoh and Tony Leung. But wowed by Simu Liu, a rising martial art star with different outlook. Awkwafina is funny. Pleasantly surprised to see Ronny Chieng!

Love the visual and music, like the plot, and will wait for a sequel.

Not walking away with a lot of deep thoughts etc, but enjoyed the movie.

Muscle & Brain, Thrilling & Touching. Why the low score?
25 October 2021
Watched the movie and shocked to see the low scores. What's going on here?? Glad that the reviews are mostly positive and accurate.

Learnt about "Railway Soldiers" (Railway troops). They are definitely muscles + brains, meaning, soldiers at same time engineers. Yizhou Hong and his father are two generations of them. They are non stoppable. Free climbing to the most extreme, diving without equipment and car racing like a roller coaster. But hey, by feeling the air they know where the outlet of a cave is and with a tablet, they analyze geometry, landslip, weather and what not. And ready to beat up a boss guy yelling at his girlfriend. Very cool.

Have to say bravo to Yilong Zhu's playing Yizhou Hong. All the physical scenes and PhD+ scholar activities aside, he honestly and heartfeltly portrayed a man, protecting and needing protection, assuring and needing assurance. Very complicated role, layer by layer, eventually, dynamic and intense character presented by solid acting.

Impressed by the special effects and touching story. Almost felt like at the scene because the vivid presentations. Brought to tears at a few moments. Not forced into, just couldn't help it. Still feeling it as of writing.

Good film. Will watch again.
