The Green Knight (2021)
Brooding, Psychedelic Folklore
Terrific. Immense style and mood. Tripped out fantasy. For fans of The Witch, Hereditary, Mandy, Border, Hagazusa, and the like.
Rick and Morty: Rickdependence Spray (2021)
I get it, it's a 90's alien invasion/space disaster style parody
But it sucks. I think that was maybe the first bad episode of Rick & Morty. Lazy. Pandering. Very rarely funny. I'm sure Dan and Justin have other projects on their plate, but it's starting to show. A show this good should be held to high standards. This sucked.
The Djinn (2021)
Do Not Listen to the Good Reviews Telling You Not To Listen to the Bad Reviews
This movie was junk. One of the laziest I've ever seen. The most generic, cliche-ridden entry I've seen in the Horror genre in a long time. A total trope festival filled with empty plot devices and almost no substance. Shot entirely in a visually unappealing, half-moved in house set, this movie offered nothing more than faulty logic, nonstop "run and hide from the bad guy" scenes, and cheap, lame CGI scares. Not a drop of authentic mythology or occultism, just a lazy, generic "Book of Shadows" of their own invention and exposition like a sledgehammer to the face. No reason at all for it to be about a djinn aside from the fact that they had a special effect they wanted to use that gave a *little* of that flavor. It could have easily been called "The Demon", "The Wish", "The Spirit" etc. Everything in this movie has been done before and done better. Avoid.
If you want to see newcomer directors worth their salt, watch the debut and sophomore features of Ari Aster and Robert Eggers.
Heaven's Gate (1980)
Oh nooooooo
Oh noooo, I'm so sorry you had to sit through 3.5 hours of the most gorgeous photography in the entire Western canon. Oh nooooo, you had to plod through Kristofferson, Walken, Isabelle Huppert, and Jeff Bridges absolutely crushing every single beautifully written scene. Aaaaah I can't believe I just sat through an evening of being immersed in glorious music, choreography, set design and was basically immersed in a bygone era of America. Rubbish!
Bob Rubin: Oddities and Rarities (2020)
Rip Torn meets George Carlin on LSD
This is among the funniest comedy specials I have ever seen. The other people writing reviews have no imagination and no taste for the Absurd (assuming it's still just the three jabronis who gave it 1 star). The genius of Durang and Beckett and Ionesco would be utterly lost on them, they would probably cringe to hear Tom Waits or read any Allen Ginsberg. This is crazed madmen comedy, beautifully written, rife with imagery, and performed by a raving lunatic. This is Comedy for 2020.
