When promises fail
3 December 2017
What amounts to approx 6.5 hours of made up cheaply fabricated sections of tension: creeping around old buildings, woods, tunnels, etc, etc. This series could easily been condensed into a 50 minute film but even that would have been a rip-off.

One reviewer had claimed that if you liked the Tunnel or the Bridge series, you'd like this. I did very much like those series but found Absentia nothing like them. My attention can often be grabbed. I was hoping someone would come up with the goods - something, anything... from either the script writer, the director or at least one of the actors but nadda.

This series (for me) was a complete let down. The concept could have been born from a kids story. Well done kid - I'm not knocking you, the script writer's to blame. The director, well they must have been drowning their sorrows in the hotel bar. The actors..... Move on, there are better rolls to play.

Off beat dry humour digest
15 October 2017
Often with comedians, you either love 'em or they leave you cold. I can't say that Steve Coogan pushes my buttons in everything he does but I get his dry humour. If he were a martini, his gin would catch but a fleeting glimpse of the Noilly Prat vermouth bottle. Sophistication he is not but he does have a natural and at times, an innocent charm.

I discovered this third series of 'The Trip' via a TV ad. I'd missed the first two series so this was my introduction. It's sad to read some of the negative reviews when the expectation had perhaps been for a gourmet's guide to Spain or maybe some sort of factual arts or historical tour of the region. It's not. It's a road trip taken by your everyday adventurers who, like most of us, can get lost, side-tracked or generally confused during the trip. Granted, there are long uncomfortable pauses in their banter but this is Steve through and through. He's great at transmitting awkwardness. What you get here is an opportunity to set aside pretense and go off with them (Rob Brydon is Steve's traveling companion) to enjoy these two English guys munching their way through lovely Spanish food whilst being... erm... awkward (ala Coogan style).

If I am allowed in post this link, notes of points of interest can be found here for all three series: https://www.comedy.co.uk/tv/the_trip/episodes/1/1/
