Get Out (2017)
Fascinating, Unpredictable and Thought-Provoking
Not since the 2003 film "Identity" have I been as surprised by an ending. This movie is an innovative gem that you might have to watch twice to fully appreciate. Not really a fan Jordan Peele's show on Comedy Central, but he did a superb job of writing, co-producing and directing "Get Out" and I eagerly anticipate his next project. Hard to discuss this movie without giving away too much, but I will say this, it makes a profound social statement, while still remaining a bit scary and thoughtfully entertaining. Good job by these talented actors of conveying this weird, yet relevant tale.
Cidade de Deus (2002)
A True Classic
A film so brutally realistic, I was almost surprised to see acting credits at the end. Beautifully shot and wonderfully conveyed, City of God is one for the ages. The main actor gave a heartfelt performance as a young man who somehow manged to maintain hope and determination despite wading through the daily torments of life in the horrific slams of Brazil. Loyal friends, an enthralling love interest and his dreams of a better life, sustain him in this modern masterpiece. Great directing.
The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete (2013)
A Gem of a Movie
Masterfully told, poignant and memorable, this film was an emotional home run. Every character was vivid and raw, especially the compassion-evoking, young lead, "Mister." Jennifer Hudson was just short of brilliant in her portrayal of a troubled, desperate mother, spiraling out of control, plagued by the repercussions of too many poor choices. This film is grittily realistic, thanks to a near-perfect cast and superb, thoughtful storytelling. Love it.
Deal with the Devil (2000)
Good On Many Levels
I'm from Memphis, TN and first saw this movie many years ago at a film festival. The theater was packed and it was actually the first local independent feature filmed in Memphis I'd seen. I loved the style and energy of deal with the devil. The writing, acting, locations and overall production was pretty good, but some of the scenes lacked depth of field and the audio was inconsistent. The storytelling was smooth and the use of classic cars; Rolls Royce, Bentley, and a very old Jag sports car were a nice touch. What I liked most about this film was the messages and metaphors regarding morality, greed, poor choices and redemption. The lead actress, Rainey Harris, has since become an accomplished gospel recording artist and her club and church performances of a songs by local Memphis writers in this film are stellar. I found the lead male to be very authentic and truly evil. If I met that guy in person, I'd be surprised if he were anything but an actual villain. Not a perfect film, but well worth watching.
