The Crush (2010)
I was tricked!
I was tricked until the last! At the beginning, I thought that the boy was crazy about his young and beautiful teacher, and he tried to rob her of her lover. However, it was wrong. The reason why this film could trick me is because the director can use sound and structure, in the other words, he or she succeeds in making good atmosphere. I was caught in the cleverly devised trap. Moreover, after watching this film, I re-thought that why I was tricked by the young swindler and the smart producer. After that, I hit upon an idea; it is pureness. In my opinion, youth like the boy never lies because of pureness. That means his action is directly related to what he wants to do. Therefore, I was tricked. Anyway, this movie entertains you, because until the last, the boy's behavior and the atmosphere of this film misleads you, and the last scene betrays your expectation or your prediction.
The Mass of Men (2012)
without saying
When I watched this short film for the first time, I wanted to avoid watching it, because the last scene was so grotesque for me. However, I found a brilliant point of this movie at the same time. It's visual telling. Without telling aloud, I could understand core characters' minds and the killer's working class. At the beginning, I sympathized with the man who tried to apply for welfare, because the female office worker treated him roughly. However, at the last, I changed my mind; I sympathized her because of the male killer, and I could not bear the same feeling to the male applicant, because he took some selfish action after the killer appeared. Moreover, trough this film, I could catch what problem gave pain to British people and what kind of them struggled from it, of course, this film told me it with visual materials. To tell the truth, I don't want to watch this film, because it shows an aspect of human being; it is selfish. I don't have a tolerance for the grotesque human characteristic, so I can't stand to watch it. However, some good points is included, so I recommend you to watch it at least one time.
Three Days in Kamakura (2012)
The Mouth of Movies
I think the theme of this movie is revival of a family, and who restores the relationship is Jay. He plays an important role. He repairs the relations not only between David and Keiko, but him and his real father. This movie shows us the change from awkward relations to close one without words, with visuals. For example, at the beginning of this movie, we see a shocking scene. It is the shower scene. Although, I think it is needed for this movie, because it shows us the awkward relations between David and Keiko. Moreover, the scene tells us why their relationship is under strain. The movie tells us directly, but we can understand it. Keiko's scars on her belly says the reason. Visuals tell us what the screenwriter wants to say instead of using the actor's or actress's mouth. Pictures play a role of mouth in movies. Lastly, Three Days in Kamakura is good model for us to undertake screen writing, because it tells us how to make people clearly understand story without words, or how to make a movie attractive. When I write a screenplay, I will watch this movie again in order to steal the above ways.
Porcelain Unicorn (2010)
naivete
When I was in my childhood, I did not have any bias for the world. As I grew up, I have got a lot of bias for things, because I have learned a lot of knowledge including not only useful or good ideas to understand the world, mechanisms of society and so on, but also mean thoughts to protect myself or to have a better position than other people. Perhaps, people call such state "an adult," but actually is it "an adult"? I do not feel so. I think some parts of me have become mature, but others have turned to immature. When I was a child, I could speak to someone without prejudice, but now I cannot. If I were the German boy in the movie, I could not say anything to the Jewish girl because of biases I have, because she is a target of discrimination for Germans at the time. The boy is not as mature as I, because I have had more experiences than he had when he was in 1943, but as for braveness and purity, he is more mature than I. After I watched this movie, I recognized the importance of naïveté, because it does not generate any anti-feeling against anything, and it leads to equality towards anyone. I cannot get back naivety like him and, but I try to communicate with anyone with respect, bravery, and equality. This movie gave me an opportunity to think that.
Father and Daughter (2000)
What happens?
Maybe, after you watch Daughter and Father, you feel, "What happens in the end?" I also had the same feeling at the first time. A few weeks later, I have rethought the end of the film, and I came to think that it had shown a parting in general. When someone who you love passes, you cannot accept the situation at first. You spend a long time understanding the fact, and then you realize that it is true. After that, you recover from the sorrow, and times when you feel sad or depression become less than the time when he or she dies. At the time, the person becomes a memory in your mind, but his or her importance does not change for you even if you become old, and you forget uncountable precious or worthless memories. We always realize it after they are lost, and regret why we do not importantly treat him or her. We always think it is natural that we talk with the person, are together with, laugh at something stupid with, and are angry at each other. We have to think it is special, or it is unusual, so moments when are together do not go back to us any more. It seems to teach it to me.
Gasman (1997)
Is it happy for her?
When I was a child, I expected that some good things happens at Christmas every year like Christmas present, dinner or something like that. At a Christmas day, usually people have good memories, and at the day, people spend it gaily with someone or alone, but this movie betrays such rule, or expectation. The little girl also predicts such things like me, but she has to know that she can't monopolize her father, and has to face reality. One of the harshest and thing for human is to face reality like money, your looks, complicated human relationships and so on. When humans meet the point to face it, their life changes dramatically and clearly. Almost people, especially people who are used to watching a happy end movie can't understand the reason why directer made such black ending, but it is happy for the little girl, because she can go through reality in early day. People have to face it someday sooner or later, so if they meet it early, they can early get the ability to patient something harsh. I think, therefore, she is a lucky girl. Anyway, this movie is complicated and difficult to understand, but this movie tells everything without saying words, with visuals, so I recommend people who are tired of usual movie or boring ending to watch this movie.
Fish Out of Water (2008)
What a Nice End It is !
A man comes out of lake, and a woman, who see him at the shore every day, smiles at him. He goes to his office. This is the end of Fish Out of Water. I felt in mind after I watched the short film, "What a nice end it is!" The beginning of the story and the body are made for the conclusion, because there are two conflict in the story for the end. Firstly, city and a boat. The man likes the way to office by using a boat, because he does not like noise, cigarette smell and smoke, and crowds. He use a boat in order to avoid the annoying things, but his commuting changes after a beautiful woman appears. She brings a lot of materials which he does not like in his boat. In other words, he brings bad luck himself. It is irony, but this irony leads to a good ending. Secondly, a woman with brown eyes and a beautiful woman with blue eyes. At first, he chooses the latter woman. He wants her to like him, so he rides his boat with her. However, as I mentioned above, she is unhappiness for him, and he is used by her. Perhaps, most of the audience could feel that he is stupid, and he should have chosen a woman who is the shore of the lake. However, in the end, he realizes it, and he abandons the beautiful woman. Finally, he and the woman with brown eyes can smile at each other. For these reasons, I feel that this movies is a good short movies, and has a beautiful ending. I want to make a good story like Fish Out of Water.
Midnight Run (1988)
excellence
I am lucky to enough to watch Midnight Run, because this movie teaches me what is the basic of comedy and action. I think that this is one of the greatest classic movies. After I watched Midnight Run, I thought why this movie was brilliant, and why I came to think I wanted to watch it again. A few minutes later, I could find the reason. This film has no weak or poor scene. All scenes are necessary and the help me understand not only the characteristic of the De Niro or Gordin role, but also Midnight Run itself. Furthermore, the conversations engage me in this movie. For example, Gordin warns De Niro of the dangers of smoking and asks him not to smoke, but De Niro does not listen to his caution. This scene is seen in many films, but I have never seen other films which a character persuades the other one not to smoke over and over even if s/he is mad at the character. Anyway, if you have never watched this movie, I recommend you to watch it. and I am sure you will like it. In addition, you will watch again and again.
Lifted (2006)
a good and cute short film
I like this short movie, because there are many points to amuse me within 5 minutes, and I do not get tired of it while watching it. When I watch Pixar's movies, I feel the producers are genius to engage our hearts in their story every time. Maybe, I think they care about how they can make a good set-up, so when I watched lifted for the first time, I thought it was aw kind of horror movie or aliens experimented with a human by kidnapping, but it betrayed my expectation, or my stereotype for alien movies. If it ware not such set-up, I would be disappointed at this movie, and would not try to watch it again. In addition, the last scene of this movie is also good. The smaller alien cannot control their UFO well till the end, I could not stop laughing at that, and at the same time, I empathized with the man who was target for the aliens, because he got a lot of misfortunes while he was sleeping. Anyway, I will watch Lifted again when I get depressed, or I meet unhappiness, because I want to get energy from this movie, and it lets me laugh.
