Casino (1995)
Absolute classic - can rewatch again and again.
"Casino" stands as an unrivaled cinematic gem, providing an authentic glimpse into the pulsating heart of Las Vegas. Under the masterful direction of Martin Scorsese, the film unfolds as a visually captivating and emotionally immersive experience. Every frame is meticulously crafted, from the glitzy casino floors to the gritty underbelly of organized crime.
What sets "Casino" apart is the powerhouse trio of performances, with Robert De Niro and Sharon Stone delivering nothing short of brilliance. De Niro's portrayal of the ambitious and complex character adds layers to the narrative, while Stone's compelling performance breathes life into the screen. However, it's impossible to discuss the film without acknowledging the exceptional talent of Joe Pesci.
Joe Pesci's portrayal of the volatile and unpredictable Nicky Santoro is nothing short of phenomenal. His intensity and charisma inject a palpable tension into every scene, earning him well-deserved acclaim. The chemistry among the lead actors creates a dynamic on-screen synergy that propels the story forward with unmatched energy.
The film's soundtrack, featuring iconic hits, serves as a time capsule, transporting the audience to the glitz and glamor of the era. Scorsese's meticulous attention to detail in capturing the intricacies of the casino world is commendable, immersing viewers in the opulence and chaos.
In the grand tapestry of crime dramas, "Casino" shines as a testament to Scorsese's directorial prowess and the stellar performances of its cast. It remains a timeless classic, a captivating journey through the highs and lows of Las Vegas, enriched by the unforgettable contribution of Joe Pesci to its cinematic legacy.
The Godfather (1972)
I don't get why it's supposed to be so good.
"The Godfather" left me somewhat dissatisfied, as its deliberate pacing and extended dialogue tended to drag, making it a rather laborious cinematic journey.
While the intricate plot held promise, the delivery lacked the dynamic elements I expected from a movie hailed as a classic. The characters, although richly developed, seemed to progress at a sluggish pace, leaving me wanting more depth and connection.
The film's overall tone, while undoubtedly well-crafted, failed to fully engage me, contributing to an overall sense of detachment. Despite its reputation, "The Godfather" fell short of meeting my personal expectations, ultimately resulting in a somewhat disappointing viewing experience.
Coming 2 America (2021)
Complete and utter waste of time.
I can't even think of anything to say about this movie, as I've pretty much forgotten it, having only watched it last night. It was dull, haphazard, cringeworthy, the whole movie was unnecessary and has taken the shine off the original a bit. Should have just left it as it is.
Kim's Convenience (2016)
Good for a while but past its shelf-life.
The first season was hilarious, with loadsa funny moments. Season 2 was also pretty good. I found Season 3 to be fairly lame and Season 4 has also continued in the same 'unfunny' manner, although it's hard to put my finger on exactly what I no longer like about it. I think the characters have become rather caricatured, Janet in particular acts neurotic and Shannon - well, she's just ridiculously cringeworthy. I generally fast forward through the scenes in the Handy Rental place.
It's hard to believe the show will be (or should be) renewed for a 5th season.
Designated Survivor (2016)
Downhill in season 3
I'm giving this show 5/10 on the back of it being great in Season 1 and 2 but I couldn't even finish season 3. It was absolute garbage, pandering to the supposedly trendy trans and gay agenda that's seen no doubt seen as necessary to promote 'diversity'. Don't get me wrong, these issues do have their place, but such forced storylines for the sake of it are a massive turn-off, literally.
Falang: Behind Bangkok's Smile (2005)
An absolutely amazing documentary
Well I had a boner throughout. Me loved it long time! The girl was incredibly hot and there's no doubt that I will be coming. Back to watching this again and again.
Designated Survivor: Run (2018)
So-so season finale
It was a satisfactory finale to what has been an up and down season - mostly good, but with a few very tepid episodes along the way.
Some of the scenes that were supposedly set in London were kind of terrible (I think they were actually filmed in Canada) but Damian's daughter's horrible English accent, and some of the overly-cliched pieces on the set: a picture of The Queen hanging on the wall of some random cafe - oh puhhhlease. It all made it kind of a tough watch for me as a real Londoner.
Besides, Hannah Wells 'in London' acting on her own authority made no sense, where did she even get her gun?
With all that having been said, I hope the show returns for Season 3.
Snatched (2017)
Absolutely horrendous
By far the worst film I've seen in years, and probably the second worst film I've ever seen, with only Adam Sandler's 'Overboard' beating it for the accolade of true worst.
I've always liked Goldie Hawn, never particularly been a fan of Amy Schumer (although Trainwreck was decent)but this movie plumbs new depths of bad.
Avoid this movie like it has syphilis.
Veep: Omaha (2017)
Season 6 must surely get better from here...
I'm a huge fan of Veep having watched S1-5 at least twice but thought this season premiere was decidedly mediocre, with thin story lines that jumped around and had no substance. I'm hoping it gets back to winning ways shortly. Only faithful bag man Gary was at his hilarious best, whilst not (in my opinion) a good episode I am still looking forward to the rest of the season.
