Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
More plot and character development than the original
The first one was a testosterone battle between Maverick and Iceman. This one has a very dangerous mission to prepare for and gives the plot much more focus. Not as much young pilot egoism as the first but still plenty.
Spoilers:
The F-14 they steal at the end isn't a plot hole. Iran got about 50 in the 1970's before the revolution and kept them in operation for a long time. It's not directly stated but the target nation is clearly Iran given the terrain, the illegal uranium enrichment plant and the operational F-14.
Morbius (2022)
Good superhero movie
Not sure why all the hate. Well paced and thought out. It doesn't end abruptly. Good special effects and fight scenes. Better than the trailer implies.
The 355 (2022)
Good action movie
Not sure why the poor reviews. Solid action movie similar to Atomic Blonde but with five female leads. Plenty of plot twists. No cliche woman either. Each are unique and realistic.
The Matrix Resurrections (2021)
Almost as good as the first
Very smartly done. Makes a lot of references to the first three movies while introducing many unique elements. Lots of good action sequences. The greatest love story ever told.
Free Guy (2021)
Westworld + Ready Player One + GTA
Guy is like Delores from HBO's Westworld. His blue shirt resembles her blue dress. Very well written and surprisingly intellectual. There's an evil corporate guy too. Pokes friendly fun at modern gamers who live with their parents and youtube commentators. Numerous pop culture references and good fun overall.
The Bodyguard (1992)
Good movie and iconic soundtrack
No reason for bad reviews. Story is formulaic but enjoyable. Acting is good too. Soundtrack is off the charts.
Wonder Woman 1984 (2020)
Mostly sucks
Failed business man turns himself into a genie. Trailer is way better than the movie.
Tenet (2020)
Good action movie, hard to follow
I found it hard to follow and the concept of moving backwards in time didn't make a lot of sense to me. Still, great acting all the way around with good action scenes.
The Matrix (1999)
One of the definitive SciFi action movies
20 years later, red pill and glitch in the matrix are part of our vernacular which speaks volumes of its influence. It had a huge influence on the generation that watched it as young adults. It remains one of most memorable movies of my generation.
The Mandalorian (2019)
Similar to Rogue One
Excellent gunslinger story set in the SW universe. Numerous references to the movies in a thoughtful way, not just for the sake of nostalgia. Pure scifi without the fantasy/mystical elements of Jedi or the force.
Star Trek: The Next Generation: Yesterday's Enterprise (1990)
One of the best episodes in the series
Top notch story, acting and battle scenes. Tasha Yar has the best performance in the series. High recommended.
Gemini Man (2019)
Deadshot+Bourne identity+clone wars
Pretty good movie. Not sure why all the bad reviews. Good action sequences and a good plot.
Anna (2019)
Good female spy flick
Lots of plot twists and flashbacks. Watch carefully. Most of the technology used is highly anachronistic and wasn't available in the late 1980s; it is similar to what we have today. This is to make the movie relatable to current audiences.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
A bit of every MCU film rolled into one
Extremely well done. Wraps up all the character arcs with a bow on top. Numerous character crossovers from every MCU film. Similar to the series finale of Star trek the next generation in some ways.
Show Dogs (2018)
Horrible message for kids
Dog is told to imagine his happy place when his genitals are inspected by a judge. The dog hates this but goes along. I couldn't believe this would be in a movie for kids. Movie sucks overall even without this scene.
Wonder Park (2019)
Cute movie
Very family friendly. No child-parent separation like Dumbo or testicle groping like Show Dogs. Not sure why all the bad reviews. I took my kids to see it twice in the theater.
Bumblebee (2018)
If you loved the 80's cartoon
Almost a prequel to the cartoon series. Great characters and overall feel. Bumblebee is excessively cute at times. Lots of 80's pop culture references. As guy who watched the cartoon as a boy, I liked it better than the Michael Bay movies.
Overlord (2018)
Not Saving Private Ryan
Horror movie loosely based on the 1944 D-Day invasion. Lots of gore. Full of plot holes but not completely outlandish.
The Meg (2018)
Much better than trailer suggests
Not a stupid monster flick that the trailer suggests. Lots of twists, interesting characters. Accurately shows the meg eating whales in whole bites. A few Gray Lady Down submarine rescue scenes. Pretty smart and enjoyable overall. Well worth seeing.
