Blitz (2011)
Gene Hunt wannabe
Statham plays a throughly dislikeable character who seems to think he's more of an Irish gangster than a cop. However there is nothing remotely interesting or absorbing about the character at all, he's a one dimensional thug, perfect for Statham who can only play one dimensional badass characters. Even Gene Hunt has more depth to him than this geezer. It really pushes the bounds of believability that this man hasn't been kicked out the force ages ago.
The cop killing villain is just your run of the mill psycho, a completely under-developed character in a movie that feels under-developed throughout. The film seems rushed and badly put together, the WPC sub-plot (if you can call it that) having little relevance to the storyline at all but added to seemingly give the movie a slight appearance of depth, but nothing more than a typical puddle. There were other disposal scenes thrown in for brief moments that made the movie feel disjointed. It didn't flow whatsoever, being more like a dotted line of scenes and characters that weren't linked or developed very well.
A half-decent film could have been made with better characterisation, a more interesting plot and less clichéd script. As it stands, the movie is a badly constructed and very routine cop film.
Dread (2009)
Unpleasant, contrived, false
The film starts fairly slow but that's not a problem as I expected some character and plot development before the film moves into stories of dread and perhaps some creepy twists and turns, as they begin to get out of their depth. Far from it though. Apart from the character Quaid, all the others seemed like vague cardboard cut-outs, one dimensional and dumb, designed for the mad protagonist to easily manipulate. The story, while seemingly building up to something possibly original (for today) and maybe something smart and engaging - although you're always aware that this might not happen but there are indications of hope - then descends into the usual saw-esqu torture porn flick.
The events and people are often contrived, people behaving unnaturally or occurrences exaggerated. There are also other incongruities I found but which I can't mention without creating spoilers. There are a lot of unanswered questions, and not because it's complex but because there are simply plenty of holes in the proceedings. Altogether, the above simply made it annoyingly contrived rather than entertaining or thrilling; it's not half as clever as it thinks or wants to be, or in fact could have been.
