Arrival (2016)
Beautiful, Philosophical, Slow Burn
To fully appreciate this movie you have to have an appreciation for concepts around free will and determinism. It is a beautiful story. The sounds and photography all make for a gorgeously display as well. If you are into high action sci-fi this might not be for you. It is more technical and nerdy in some ways, which I loved. If you like Christopher Nolan movies (inception, interstellar), then you'll most likely enjoy this. It has a deeper question that its posing to viewers, if you understand the movie. I truly loved it and don't know why I waited so long to watch. 10/10 recommend.
Mrs. America (2020)
Good show. Actors were fantastic!
Overall great. Interesting watch. What really shined though, and made the show, was the performances of the actors. Cate Blanchett was particularly incredibly but it truly wasn't just one or two that did great. It was the whole ensemble that was fantastic.
It can move a little quick through some of history and the more technical/procedural stuff though. I personally enjoy watching historical bio-pics or period pieces and like to pause and look up the actual history of events throughout a series/movie. I definitely had to do that a lot with this show to get a better background of who and what was happening at certain moments. I expect other viewers would need to as well if you aren't super familiar with people/events/situations of the women's liberation movement.
Outlander (2014)
Adore This Show
Watched this show on whim. Fell in love. Binged all 4 seasons and was captivated every minute. Amazing, unique, and wonderful story. Seriously considering picking up the books as well. You won't regret watching this. Some scenes can be pretty graphic but the love story is simply my favorite.
Outlander: Faith (2016)
Incredible, Beautiful
What an incredible episode. I was so moved I'm even writing a review just for it. The first half of Season 2 moves a little slow and you've felt the distance between the two characters...but this episode...I mean just wow. What amazing writing, acting, directing. It is an emotional journey and just incredibly beautiful to watch.
The Favourite (2018)
I'm not sure how I feel about it.
I'd been really wanting to watch this movie for quite some time. At the end of the movie I was like... thats it?? ...Thats the movie that won all these awards?
I don't think it lived up to the hype. The acting was good but overall it was just a strange movie. I don't know...Im into off the wall, creative, and odd movies but this one missed the mark for me. I honestly regretted watching it.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Really mixed feelings
It was my least favorite Avenger movie. I've been a huge MCU fan from the beginning and it feels like this movie strayed from the core elements of previous ones. It thought they dumbed it down a bit. They were almost trying to be too funny (especially with the Thor & Hulk stories) that you lost a bit of the depth. Ultimately dissapointed compared to how hyped I was going into it. Also, they didn't need to kill that many people or finish them out so 'neatly.' Huge Captain fan, and I thought his ending didn't really fit what his character would actually choose to do. It was kind of a let down.
Kevin Hart: Irresponsible (2019)
Cringeworthy and not relateable
I like Kevin Hart. Im not a diehard fan but I've watched his other standups and enjoy his movies. This was just not really funny. There were a few good parts. The rollercoaster joke was good. But honestly some of the jokes I was like...uhhhhh...it kind of sounds like you're just joking about how you treat your wife and children bad. I might even say the turtleneck joke took it too far for me? And I am NOT someone who gets offended like that. I love standup and raw jokes but that made me cringe.
Also, the way he was talking about his household dynamics just isn't really relateable. Its the 21st century, unless you're rich, almost every home is a home where both parents work and raise kids. It'd be one thing if he owned his wealth, like "we're lucky my wife stays at home with the kids", but instead he says "I know SOME of you women even work and raise babies." Like what? Some of us? I think you mean 90% of us. Women don't nap all day with their babies as he said.
When you're trying to joke about family dynamics, you almost have to be relateable for it to land well, or you got to own your wealth and say this is how it is for me. In my opinion, he just came off sounding oblivious to his audience throughout most of it.
I would skip this standup. There are better ones to spend your time on.
Brooklyn Nine-Nine (2013)
Fun show - Worth the watch!
I was interested in watching this show because I'm huge fan of the Good Place, also created by Michael Shur, but the first episode was kind of slow and I ended up not finishing it. It wasn't until a few weeks later my husband randomly tells me that I "need to watch this awesome show he found Brooklyn Nine-Nine!" that I was like okay, now I've got to watch it. Totally glad I did.
It took a few episodes for me to really get into it but by mid-season 1 I was hooked. It's a pretty entertaining/funny show and the characters are great. Their special nuances and inside jokes (like Terry and his yogurt), which the writers carry on throughout the seasons really makes it fun to watch. I especially love the diverse cast.
Its just the kind of show where you can binge a few episodes before bed and it brightens your day. Light, funny, and worth watching.
NINE NINE!
The Good Place (2016)
Great Show - Philosophy Grad Student Approved 👍🏻
This show is not only clever, creative, and funny but it tackles philosophical dilemmas in a hysterical way, especially The Trolley Problem episode. As a philosophy grad student, this brings pure joy to my heart. This show works through issues from some great philosophers (accurately, if it I might add) while having fun and making fun of how us humans really can't help but fork things up sometimes.
Outside of my nerdy adorement, it really is a well written show. One of the best I've had the pleasure of watching in a long time.
Also, what an amazingly diverse cast!
Thank you Michael Shur for showing that philosophy can be fun and entertaining for everyone!
