Kinsô no Vermeil ~Gakeppuchi majutsushi wa saikyô no yakusai to mahô sekai wo tsukisusumu~ (2022)
Wow!!! Unexpectedly good
Alright I accept this stupid websites challenge of 600 words. I could just use AI to generate a review so I can write my actual one, but I like this one so much I will write 600 words. And the 6.5 rating is lies. Yeah they don't want you to see this one because it features the ideal female form yet does not confuse feminity vs masculinity. Unlike what advertisements will have you believe this show has girls as they really are in university. Body proportions inaccurate? I have experienced it myself and this show actually hit a competitive school vibe, putting down real life because the characters here act honorably. What really sells it is the blunt vulgar subtitles. The sub is very very good over the dub which has raspy badly emoted voices. While the action isn't all there animation wise, the background visuals are pretty especially in lighting, and there are many beautiful scenes in this that have classic anime reminscense rather than being over bold. I could see 7 seasons more of this if they expand on the singular issue of the animation of magic casts broadly, but the rest of the design right up until every magic cast is so good in making it seem algorithmic and is unassuming to the viewer. I really like this. There are scenes where they bring the darkness out and it's genuine. I really want more. This could be an incredibly moving piece as a whole in the end if (god please continue it) Alto becomes a legendary mage and Vermeil must leave him inevitably because humans only live so long, and it would probably have some story rather than old age, this could turn to being heart wrenching rather than funny dark. They left so many doors open with this one it could happen, and the characters gathered already are likeable in design and writing.
Vinland Saga (2019)
Retcon Odin In
Vinland Saga is an anime that is gaining popularity among fans of the genre. The show, based on the manga series of the same name by Makoto Yukimura, follows the journey of Thorfinn, a young Viking warrior seeking revenge against the man who killed his father. While the show has its strengths, such as its animation, character development, and plot, there is one glaring omission that is the main reason for this review's 1-star rating - the absence of Odin.
Odin, the Norse god of wisdom, death, and war, is a crucial figure in Viking mythology. He is the father of Thor, the god of thunder, and is known for his role in the afterlife as the chooser of the slain. Odin's presence is felt throughout Viking culture and is an essential part of the historical and cultural context of the story. However, despite this, Odin is entirely absent from both seasons of Vinland Saga.
This is a significant loss for the show, as Odin's presence could have added depth to the story, making it more engaging and authentic. Odin's absence means that viewers are missing out on an essential part of Viking culture, mythology, and symbolism. Odin could have been a character in the show, adding a layer of mysticism to the narrative, or even just an omnipresent force that affects the characters' actions.
In the manga series, Odin is referenced several times, but in the anime adaptation, he is never mentioned or alluded to. This omission is a significant flaw in the show's adaptation, as it shows a lack of respect for the source material and the culture it represents. Fans of the manga who were hoping to see Odin brought to life on the screen will be sorely disappointed, and newcomers to the series will miss out on a vital aspect of the story.
Odin's absence also affects the character of Thorfinn. In the manga, Thorfinn is shown struggling with the conflict between his desire for revenge and his belief in the Norse gods. This struggle is an integral part of his character development, as he comes to understand the consequences of his actions and the meaning of honor. Odin's presence would have provided a framework for this conflict, allowing the audience to understand Thorfinn's motivations and the consequences of his choices.
The show's lack of Odin also removes the potential for symbolism and deeper meaning in the narrative. Odin is associated with many symbols, including ravens, wolves, and the Yggdrasil tree, all of which could have been used to enhance the show's themes and messages. The use of symbolism is an essential part of storytelling, and the absence of Odin removes a layer of depth from the narrative.
In conclusion, Vinland Saga's omission of Odin is a significant flaw that detracts from the overall quality of the show. Odin's presence would have added depth, symbolism, and authenticity to the story, making it more engaging and satisfying for viewers. Fans of the manga will be disappointed, and newcomers to the series will miss out on an essential part of Viking culture and mythology. While the show has its strengths, including its animation, character development, and plot, the absence of Odin is a detrimental loss that cannot be overlooked. As a result, this review rates Vinland Saga with only one star.
Edit: Holy **** There's a side Odin quote suddenly in episode 13, it's impossible my message was read. Nonetheless the episode was excellent. I guessed they are saving the budget as the earlier the season it is noticeable the corners that are cut to save time, which is perfectly acceptable. Since they want to run this multiple seasons. It's being done at the best they can to compete with a very over the top good and over animated season 1. The character introductions are still a little deadpan over dramatic, but this series should continue and flesh out. It's very promising.
Afro Samurai (2007)
Wow 7.6? Deserves 8+
This piece is unbelievably cool. The reviews can say all they want about the story, as a piece of film this clearly does not deserve 7.6 average, rate it up guys. The first two episodes are convincing enough of an 8 rating. Numba 8. The style and effort put into this series is jaw dropping at moments, and the dub is easily an instant favorite. No stupid unconvincing plots, just pure dragon balls.
The Northman (2022)
Ruthless Iceland tourism
While shot composition throughout this movie is excellent and the action is impressive we've seen this slaughter a million times, I didn't come out of this too entertained. The opening hook of the movie was good until it became an Iceland tourist trap with common locations used that are seen in every Iceland shooting. Scenes with CGI overdubbing is a turnoff and might as well play a video game instead. This is getting much higher reviews than it deserves, if you want a well written Viking story stay home and go for Vikings or Vinland Saga, the saving grace here is if you want some gore, but I was fairly bored. I'll just visit Japan instead, sorry Iceland.
Smiling Friends (2020)
Better direction for adult swim
The harken back to the super chaotic adult swim shows is great. I don't get why it's being hailed so well because look at the shows that were lost before given a chance at a crescendo like Superjail. It doesn't feel like a fair trade and I've started to avoid adult swim when it is really the only TV corporation I liked. This show and everything they put out lately has felt asexual, dull, lacking on the expression and more concerned about user experience and padding us for our own safety. The screaming and quick escalation is funny and has been since Bushworld adventures and it reminds me of Big Lez. There's also talented animation blending between dimension walls which deserves respect. I like this show but I'm not moved by it to any degree related ones have. I feel like adult swim is shamming us into raving about one little good thing they put out while running to the bank. At least there is enough out there already to satisfy one lifetime.
Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (1988)
Japanese Star Wars and it's 110 episodes long
Tis during the winter of lockdowns, and all was silent.
For I watched this opera with great interest,
In the lasers and the explosions,
And I enjoyed it.
Was life so simple then.
Dead Man (1995)
America
This is very good, you were fated to find it, every review has something different to say, which is why you should watch it and bring the ratings up, this is the starry night of the USA, forgotten on a wall in the MoMA, but never forgotten once seen.
Clarkson's Farm (2021)
Honest
The woman who reviewed this in the guardian must be secretly attracted to jeremy to rate it that low
clarkson is a genuine man, we all want to punch at least a few people in our lives.
ZeroZeroZero (2019)
textbook case on media addiction
Another case of an overproduced dragged out series hinged for the couch potato with the gigantic lcd screen in their basement movie theater
has some pretty shots of countryside and cities contrasted by awful night shooting with not any meaningful lighting so that even if were in black and white the entire shot would be black, plot is dragged out and all over the place while other crime thrillers have stories that make sense, script isn't even existent, action is pretty good but brought down by everything around it
built to be a timewaster for the enslaved amazon prime video viewer on autoplay, watch something stimulating.
Space Adventure Cobra (1982)
finally
A movie I have found in the dark year of 2021 with truly strong female characters.
Voyna i mir (1965)

One of the most beautiful never ending pieces of film on earth
This will immerse you in another world.
