Dune (2000)
enjoyable, but not what i would call 'good'
I've just watched all three episodes over the weekend, and i have to say i did enjoy it. But what enjoyed was frank Herbert's story and not this production itself... I thought just about everything about it sucked.. wooden acting, cheapo polystyrene set design, the backdrops were just laughable, the lighting looked like a kids play & the screenplay conversion wasn't exactly the work of a genius. You cant really blame them though, they were obviously on a tight budget and had a lot of material to produce so fair play. Basically it was just very 'TV'.. But yeah , it blew really, but its Dune and so however rubbish the production the story is always going to carry it through :)
Mission: Impossible III (2006)
what a surprise!
blimey, i wasn't expecting that! This is actually a good film! I really wasn't expecting to enjoy this after nearly slitting my wrists from watching the first two (especially mi:2), but surprise surprise i loved it! i thought it was superbly paced, and felt like it had a good number of memorable scenes (a lot of action movies just seem to be 'over' before you can really think whats happened). They stuck simon pegg in there too, which is always a good idea. The fight scenes weren't cheesily shot like john woo's one and there were some great 'lost' like set piece shots - particularly during the chopper chase through the wind farm, loved it. Also a few little nods here and there to some french and Asian cinema were quite unexpected, but certainly put a wee smile on my face. Little touches like that really helped give this film some personality, which is what most big Hollywood action flicks desperately lack.
Children of Men (2006)
Almost but not quite for me.
I saw this around a week ago so cant remember much particular detail, my memory is a bit rubbish you see :( I did enjoy the film and am glad i saw it, but it seems a lot of people are getting hard over it and i don't quite see why.. I thought the film generally had great photography, and the killer editing on some of the sequences had me gripped, they had a bit of a laugh too which is always nice. But beyond that i found the character development a little awkward and thought everything seemed a little 'convenient', although thats not really an issue in itself as we all know sometimes things can work out that way. I would not really call it that thought proviking either; i fail to see where it has anything to say that weve not thought and seen before, a little more depth here would have been nice, though its by no means essential for a good film as we all know. Its the holes that really bugged me though, there were quite a few that i just couldn't plug such as; if the terrorists couldn't shoot at Owen in the car when they were escaping from the farm (for fear of accidentally getting the girl), then how come they could shoot Juilianne Moore in the car before? and while they were on a motorbike too! it makes no sense.. Too many silly holes like that just irritate me unless the film is amazing enough to gloss over them I'm afraid. Also for a long film not much really seemed to happen, for me it flowed a little too well for its own good. Overall yeah an OK movie but for me its not what everyone is cracking it up to be, my ideas of recent films that need to be seen are Brick, Volver and maybe even The Departed (though it ain't quite Infernal Affairs!) Oh yes, and i think they really should have just left her floating there ;)
Grass (2003)
genius
Genius. one of the best out of the uk in years. the only thing is why on earth the bbc chose to air it at 10pm on a Saturday night!? idiots! To this day i have only met about two other people who ever saw this and i am very into comedy and so are a lot of people i know. In fact i only saw about two episodes myself.. who on earth that would be interested in this is actually home at that time?? yeah maybe a couple of nights in across the 6 or 7 episodes, but not enough to 'get into' it and remember its always on or to record it etc. Really gets my goat that the bbc resigned this fantastic comedy to its grave by airing it at such a ridiculous time! :( I'd love to actually tell you a little about it rather than just freak you out with my resentful rantings but i cant remember much to be honest (except that my wife and i loved it) and as much as i would love to buy it they haven't released a DVD so... Anyway, i'll live!
