Guilt (2019)
Woeful script writing
The issue with this, it was a brilliant vehicle for some really clever, comedic and nuanced writing. But the writer/s decided to pursue obvious and repetitive storylines. I have no idea why. The fact that the central character is supposed to be smart and ruthless, yet gets rumbled and foiled at every twist and turn by the baddies and the other so-called 'goodies' alike, makes zero sense. And, to compound matters, the central protagonist kept making the same mistakes whilst believing himself to be the smartest cookie in town. It's like the scriptwriters took a very naive take on morality and expected that to be good enough to drive the plot; it wasn't. The first 3 episodes of season 1 were good; very good. After that, well, read above.
Beast (2022)
Is this a wind-up?
What was IE thinking about? Is he skint? This is beyond terrible. There is nothing worthwhile about this film. It fails on every level:
- the boring family angst, check;
- the super false connection for black western people with Africa check;
- the beyond ridiculous script, super check;
- the absolute shocking acting, check.
There is nothing redeemable about this movie. I like IE; I mean, I think he's good in just about everything he does. But, right now, I'm very glad he rules himself out of playing James Bond because this tells me he never had the gravitas to play Bond.
Super disappointed.
The Gold (2023)
Ruined by constant Class tropes
The Director/writer Overused Tropes About Class, ruining the series.
Opening: The film about real-life crime had the potential to be a compelling and thought-provoking piece of cinema, but unfortunately, the overuse of tropes about class made it a disappointing and cliched experience.
Throughout the series, the director relied heavily on stereotypes and tropes associated with different social classes, which ultimately detracted from the authenticity and realism of the story. For example, the wealthy characters were all portrayed as greedy, manipulative, and heartless, while the working-class characters were depicted as noble, hardworking, and downtrodden. These simplistic characterisations were not only tired and predictable but also failed to accurately reflect the complexities of real-life class dynamics. Every episode had multiple references to the working class vs the middle/upper class.
The use of these tropes felt lazy and uninspired as if they were included as a shortcut to evoke emotion and create drama rather than as a means of exploring the nuances of the story. As a result, the film felt superficial and lacked the depth and substance that could have made it a truly compelling work of art. It was seriously amateur and seriously bland.
The BBC production teams once again signal why they are the shadow of former years. Politics and ideology have corrupted the corporation beyond usefulness.
1883 (2021)
Started well, but then the diversity and ID politics agenda arrived...
The first 3 or so episodes were good. Then, it all heads downhill. Firstly, why are so many scenes overladen with tears? In a wild west historically remembered for toughness and stoicism, there seems to be an awful lot of tears from the male leads! Is there a reason for this change in direction, is this a female director injecting a heavy dose of femininity into a hitherto masculine vista!?
In furtherance, we're expected to believe the womenfolk could order the men around and leave them 'babysitting' so they can play the heroine. Strong female leads, check; morally superior minorities, check; evil white men, check - full house!
It becomes clear: this was not made for me. The producers and director don't care about the opinion of middle-aged white men. This is a progressive reimagining of history; this is an exercise in revisionist storytelling. Well, fair enough. A genre that would have been routine fodder for my ilk has now been recast for progressives and those who are obsessed by diversity and inclusion.
The So What: it started well; the middle and end were ruined; the target audience will enjoy, but those looking for substantial storytelling in the conservative mould will be left disappointed and wondering who is making good TV and Film for them.
Moses Storm: Trash White (2022)
This isn't comedy, this isn't funny.
If this is what passes for comedy in 2022, I'd rather be miserable. There is absolutely nothing funny about this film. Do yourself a favour, watch something made in the 90s or early 2000s.
The Wheel of Time: The Eye of the World (2021)
Anyone scoring this over a 2 is being disingenuous.
This episode confirms I'll not watch another episode and I be happy for the series to be cancelled. Ideological and/or virtue signalling casting has ruined this show. It is clear that diversity of skin colour trumps acting skill and the storyline. The majority of the so-called strong female leads just couldn't act. Forcing diversity in every scene/character signals that this is not a serious attempt to create a vision, this is a tick-box exercise in diversity quotas. I had high hopes for this show but it is beyond salvageable. There is nothing worthwhile with the series. I'm out!
