Omoide no Marnie (2014)
Phenomenal
Symbolism of objects and images like the owl, the house being drawn and painted, the blond haired doll, the Shiloh representing fear...themes of abondonment, trauma, anxiety, loneliness, depression...the contrast between her aunt and the couple she stayed with being so laid back...the animation is so beautiful. You can feel the love. Amazing soundtrack. The beautiful transitions between dreaming, imagining and reality. The connections the protagonist made to the world and the closure resulting from this journey. So Incredibly nuanced. 10/10 As good as Spritited Away and Princess Mononoke.
Made of Honor (2008)
Terrrrrible
I know I'm 10 years late but wow this seems far more outdated than that. Aside from the storyline being extremely weak and predictable, it is so ignorant regarding several subjects that are completely inappropriate now. Makes fun of retardation and centrally associates homosexuality with embarrassment. By far most obviously it is ignorant of other countries outside of the US and has no tolerarance for their traditions. If this woman is second thinking her marriage based on the idiotic factors that seemed to turn her off, she definitely should gtfo. All-American dream wedding shite.
Vice (2018)
Ehhhrrrggg
To be fair i only watched the first hour, about half of it, but it was so boring. I hope it got better.
I am Australian, not American. I majored in international politics. This was not political and exploritative enough for me. The "humour" was cheap.
It touched on a few facts, but nothing revelationary.
I would have liked to see the second half so i cant speak for the whole movie, but the first half was just so bad :/
The Lobster (2015)
Perfect
Amazing metaphor.
It draws parallels between the absurdity of the arbitrary relationship norms and rules that exist in its world and our world. It asks bigger philosophical questions about the nature of relationships: what love actually is, what marriage actually means, what it means to be free (he was neither free being forced to be in a couple, nor was he free as a 'loner' - both sides were equally oppressive) - this begs the question of why we have to be in conventional relationships and not acknowledge changes in relationships. It sheds light on the very black and white nature of society's expectations.
He remarks in the first half something about "is it easier to pretend you dont care when you do, than to pretend that you care when you dont".
I thought it was interesting that in the whole movie there was a strong theme of lack of loyalty. Most interestingly, rachel (1) tells the loner leader that they could have blinded him instead of her and (2) at the end she lies to him about it heightening your senses in an attempt to make him do it - and when he responds "i know" (he has seen her mistake a tennis ball for a kiwi fruit) i think he sort of realises the flawed nature of their relationship - the only relationship in the movie that was momentarily real.
In the end, i think she doesnt want to be blind and alone and turned into an animal, and it begs the question that if she really loved him, would she want him to cut out his eyes? I think the answer is no.
This movie will annoy you if you need a resolution, as this is more of a fascinating exploration of this fictional world.
