The Stranger (2022)
Riveting
If you know, you know. If you don't then you might miss the subtleties. A slow burn but so worth it.
As the story slowly unfolds you do run through a range of scenarios in your head. But then it clicks and all you want is validation you are right.
Joel Edgerton is very convincing as Mark and is equally matched in strength of performance by Sean Harris whose character gives away nothing.
As for cinematography, vastness, remoteness and loneliness the tyranny of distance all come through.
With regards to the script, less is more, as the writer's invest their trust in the actors to carry the story. This investment reaps high returns as we could barely look away.
Brilliant!
Versailles (2015)
Gloriously decadent
Had to rewatch the entire series from the start after achieving the bucket list item of travelling half way across the world to visit the palace and found it to be even more delicious the second time round. You will enjoy the opulence and beauty of the palace and its grounds which are beautifully shot and even more beautiful in person. Enjoy the deception, intrigue and scheming as the nobles jostle for favouritism and ask yourself if anything has really changed all these centuries on. Immerse yourself in the history and traditions of the French Court where one of most heinous crimes surely is dressing poorly. Addictive and fun. Highly recommend.
Mystery Road: Origin (2022)
Didn't disappoint
It would be hard to step into the shoes of the brilliant Aaron Pedersen, but as we enjoyed all the Mystery Road's, including Goldstone, before were prepared to take the risk. We were worried about the character development and if an authentic young version of Jay Swan would come across but no matter bc Mark Coles Smith didn't disappoint. You can see the likeness in the brooding temperament, the thinking man's scowl and then once or twice, that dazzling smile breaks through. The series delivered complexity and depth and our lead was matched with an equally strong cast.
Didn't see that twist though.
We hope ABC continues to write this series eventually linking the stories of young Jay to the older version.
A Very Charming Christmas Town (2020)
Painful
Not charming at all. Should've switched off the moment she "fell" into the gutter. The acting was wooden and not believable. The script writing was simple and lacklustre. The sets are completely ridiculous - was that snow or quilters bunting? There is no chemistry between the lead actors. Was looking for a bit ofChristmas warmth but this was so clumsy I had to turn it off. If the ending was good I'd never know but can wager this:- she ended up returning to songwriting producing a super cheesy song and wrote a positive review of the town while he, well he found the one that stuck.
I'll tick yes for containing spoilers just in case.
Emma. (2020)
I feel a draught...
Unfortunately the peripheral characters steal the show leaving the main act unable to win it back. Everything was there, a dashing Mr Knightly, a lovely best friend, beautiful costumes and glorious sets, but still somehow the delivery falls short.
I'd happily warm up with Mr Woodhouse, (quick, get the screen), window shop with Miss Bates, and even poor Mr Elton had my empathy; but Emma was brittle, a little self absorbed and far too cold.
I do wish they'd given her a little more warmth.
