Sky High (1922)
The Grand Canyon, live and in person!
12 July 2023
I saw this late at night on TCM. !!! I spent years hiking down in the Grand Canyon, and this is the real thing. The plot is not important. The footage of the Canyon is not made of Southern California location shots, but spectacular film of various places on the South Rim, and in the side canyons below. I recognize many stretches of the Bright Angel Trail, though how they got a horse to gallop up it, I have no idea. The NPS pack mules slog along slowly, and most humans, myself included, manage only two or three miles and hour, up hill. Watch this movie, if only to see the Grand Canyon as it was before the "improvements" of the 21st century!

Dune Drifter (2020)

Old School Science-Fiction!
3 March 2023
I was raised on my father's WWII era science fiction magazines. In the 1950's I read everything he got from the Science Fiction Book Club. If you're too young to remember any of that, I feel for you. I watched them all, all the movies made before CGI. They were better, honest they were.

Dune Drifter is old school science fiction; space ships, desperate fighting, space ship crash, hostile planet, aliens who never give up. Yes, I see a lot of people getting snarky about a lot of things in the reviews of this film, but not everybody has George Lucas' budget. These guys did a great job. This goes on the "I'll watch it again" shelf.

The best improvement over the old days is a woman heroine protagonist. But then there was always Arcadia Darrell...

!!!!!
30 July 2006
I am an old man and I've seen a million movies. I don't like anime. The eyes are too big, giant transformer robots are boring after the first ten seconds, and the obsession with schoolgirls is annoying. But late last night I saw "Time Stranger" on TV. I won't try to describe it, but if you've seen it, YOU KNOW! I've been in hospital beds, opiated, nearly dying, and the accurate depiction of Remy's dreams, living in the past, the present and the future all at once was startlingly familiar. Her fortitude, her courage, chambering her last round, tying the gun to her broken hand in the face of monstrous certain death, never giving up, never giving in, to the fight outside or to the struggle within herself! I wept when it ended. See this movie!
