The Watcher (2022)
Suspense at its best
I started watching with cautious optimism. And then the story began to reveal itself like the delicate leaves of a rose opening up its silky petals. The story then zigs and zags and you never know who to trust or what to believe.
When Thora gave her confession, I kind of felt a little disappointed. And I realized it's better not to know. I loved the suspense stretched out to the very end.
Acting was great.
Storyline was amazing.
Cinematography was beautiful.
My brain is constantly in motion and this show kept it occupied. Loved it. I loved how rich the characters were and how the history between Dean and Nora was a big player in driving them apart. The secrets held by the different characters also made everyone a suspect. I loved the reveal when each secret explained away the possibility of that character being the watcher.
Halloween Ends (2022)
Boring, disjointed Travesty of. Movie
I won't even give it the respect of calling it a film. This is a movie. A bad one. Just bad. Started watching Halloween Kills and had no Idea what was happening so then I stopped it and watch H2018. I loved that film. Then I watched HKills. Were there some cringy moments in Kills? Hell yes.
But the story is cohesive And there's tons of immortal MM just walking around causing carnage.
As most have said, MM does r even show up until after the first hour. The Corey guy and his psych mother are more annoying than anything and I don't know why there was so much focus on him. He isn't cute. His character is boring. And his attachment to the granddaughter is weird and dark.
Which is another point about this movie. It was just dark and heavy with no gory payoff. The Corey kid was just weird and uncomfortable to watch. The granddaughter is good only for screaming, looks of disdain, misplaced teen angst in a grown woman, and a complete z character change since HKills. She's a brat who is snarky with Laurie Strode for no reason. It's jarring and frustrating.
And Mike....this immortal beast who survived being trapped in a burning house, shot at, stabbed, run over and falling off roofs is now defeated by a grandma and her grandkid? Where's the logic here? This dude killed like 12 firefighters in H2018 but now can't fight a wimpy man-child and is defeated by an elderly woman.
The parade to the town dump is cheesy.
Adding insult to injury is the random hate people in the town have for Laurie and Corey. In HKills MM killed like 25 people but now the people in town seem to have no memory.
And MM living in a sewer just makes no sense. The story could have picked up immediately after H2018 with more tension between him and Laurie and Officer Hawkins. They could have done so much more to drive closure to the story line.
Jumping ahead 4 years offers little value. Don't pay for this movie. Stream it. The last 2 movies were great but this travesty dropped a bomb. A large funky bomb....the kind left in a porcelain bowl after Taco Bell.
But watch it for yourself. Form your opinion but don't be mad if you paid money to watch it. You've been warned.
Bless the Harts (2019)
I want season 3!!!!
I love this show. I am a woman who loves adult animated cartoons. It's one of the very few that isn't crude but still has the humor and story development that draws you in.
It really gets great in the second season as the characters get more fleshed out and the animation quality improves. It pays homage to a southern family without making them into cliches. The subtlety in the humor is perfect.
It seems that it was really hitting its stride right as it was cancelled. From the ratings it seems like you either loved it or hated it. For those that hated it, they most likely didn't watch pass the first few episodes. I will definitely miss it. It should have had a 3rd season.
Dicktown (2020)
Clever, Diverse, Well-Written, and Deeper than it Appears
Animated adult cartoons are my favorite genre these days. This one quickly grabbed my attention. It's got the wittiness of early seasons of Archer without the over the top entitled and spoiled Archer Ego. Don't get me wrong, Archer's great. But I like the level of introspection these characters have. If you don't get the funny, then it's just not for you. I think it's hilarious but engaging. I love Tucker and his endless supply of goods. I like the relationship between the two leads and it's refreshing to see the honesty and emotion they share. Cis white males can be evolved, well-rounded, in touch with their emotions, and not threatened by "others". This show is a testament to that.
Loved it!
She's Gotta Have It (2017)
Wonderful Meld of Black Feminism, Black Love, and Self Discovery
I was somewhat underwhelmed by Season 1. However, I have been completely blown away by season 2. I felt as though I was journeying right along with Nola Darling. I learned a great deal about black artists and Puerto Rican history while I watched Nola and her circle grow and mature. Relationships wane and ebb, lovers come and go, but growth is attained in each experience. We see that with Nola's character. I loved the depth of this season. The focus was not solely on Nola's bed and sex life. This opened up the narrative to portray more dimensions of both the lead character and her inner circle. The cast is amazing, the direction and settings were fantastic. Highly Recommend.
Into the Dark: Pooka! (2018)
Wilson, close your mouth.
It's not that I don't understand the film. It's an artsy, psychological thriller that true film buffs will probably love. Lots of symbolism, double meaning, etc.
I'm not that kind of movie fan. I love strong movie-universes with compelling actors. This movie had none of that for me. Wilson had 2 major expressions: fear and shaky trepidation or surprise. In the former, he holds his mouth open for ridiculous amounts of time. In the latter, he simply refuses to blink. It's hard to get into a story when you don't like the character. I wanted him to blink and close his mouth.
Seems petty but when you are watching a character for 90 minutes, the petty becomes ridiculous. But I waited for the end because I was hoping for a big payoff. I was disappointed.
Again, film buffs might really enjoy it. Wasn't my cup of tea. I want a refund on my time.
The Discovery (2017)
Deeper than some may appreciate
I read the negative reviews for this film and I have to disagree with many. I thought the pacing was well done and the sequence of events was very important. When Toby finally asks "We don't know what happens if someone dies when they die?", we finally get to the core of the film's meaning.
There are arguments that the film doesn't discuss enough detail about the afterlife and how it works. I'd argue that this is the point....no one really does know. And in the umpteenth version of Will's life as we see told in the movie, it's possible that the very notion of "The Discovery" is just an attempt for his reality to intersect with an alternate version of itself.
The discovery I found was that the world of possibility is wide open after death. That even in the film's universe, nothing is set in stone. All of the individuals are just reflections of infinite, interlocking loops. It made me think. And i love movies that make me think.
