The Queen's Gambit (2020)
More about the player than the game
This is a drama series, watch with that expectation. The performances are spectacular, the story is great with adorable characters. However, I started watching the show thinking I will understand the technicalities of the game better. All throughout the show, you get to understand the game was tough or a particular point was a game changer only through the narration. I so wish the show creator had taken 10 minutes to deeper into at least 2 moves. Anyway, it's worth a one time watch, specially when you have time in hand. Remember, it's not a sports drama, it's a drama based on a player's life.
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975)
Not sure why it's so popular
Had a terrible day at office, so decided to wind down with this classic which was on my watchlist for a long time. I had high expectations from this movie. I mean it is ranked 18 on IMDB top list, so there has to be something riveting about this movie, right? Entire 2+ hours went into that search. It's not a bad movie, not at all. I loved the nurse's character and her performance. You will also feel sad for the patients that go through the tyrannical abuse. The ending is sad and makes you ponder. And that's it. Seriously, what is this movie doing in the top 20 list? I think I'd have liked the movie better if I didn't have very high expectations riding on it due to its high rating and number of oscar wins. May be it was one of its kind when it came out in the 70s but now it's more of an above average drama movie.
The Legend of Korra (2012)
Every episode hurts...
First, let me state that I have only watched Season 1 of the series yet. So if the series gets substantially better afterwards, this review may not hold true.
I finished watching ATLA after it was released on Netflix this year and just like all other fans I absolutely fell in love with its characters, specifically Iroh, Zuko, Sokka and Toph. I believe the reason why ATLA was so successful is because of the depth of its characters and the growth they exhibited in their journey. Each and everyone main character imparted some wisdom and inspired in their own way.
I began watching TLOK with the same hopes and boy were they smashed! I have zero admiration for Korra. Who made her the Avatar?! She is mighty arrogant and brash. Everything just comes so easy to her, all the bendings, the boyfriend, the victories. There is no struggle, no growth and no inspiration. None of the supporting characters also stand out. I did like the premise of S1 and even the animation was top notch. But the series just didn't connect. If you are a big ATLA fan you might get into the nostalgic loop like me where you will keep looking for some character to match up to the greats of ATLA, but alas, it doesn't happen.
You can watch the series as a standalone. You will find it mediocre, something you can watch to pass time. ATLA on the other hand felt like a blessing in life, simply not to be missed.
