The Idol (2023)
Misunderstood
Like many, I almost quit after the first 1-2 episodes. But this turns into something unexpected, something complex and intense. I never saw anything that happens coming as the season went on. Such complex characters all emotionally damaged and struggling. I wish people could get past the nudity/sex. It's deeper than that. Everyone has pieces of them you're not seeing. The lengths people will go to get what they want - what damaged people will do to one another.
Yes it's provocative no doubt and not for someone looking for a mindless or lighthearted show. It's not a feel good series, nor was it intended to be. Based on the reviews, it's a bit too much ugly reality of the entertainment industry, and the way women in particular are used...or are they merely playing the game?
Go into this series in the right headspace and what you expect it to be.
Queen Sugar (2016)
Best damned show currently on tv
Amazing cast. Superb acting and directing. I've not read the novel so I'm able to enjoy independent of how the story unfolded in that format. Slow build in season 1 but DAMN is it worth it! Stick with it. I watch a lot of shows but this is the one I live for. Gripping, real, gutsy, emotional & compelling. This story and these characters stick with you.
Roswell, New Mexico (2019)
Favorite new show
I'll start off by saying I've not seen any prior Roswell series, so I cannot compare, but I love this one - and I didn't expect to. Maybe it's not going to win an Emmy - but that said it's addicting. It was a fairly slow build, but by the season 1 finale, I'm invested in all the characters, their own struggles and based on the cliffhanger, I'm definitely ready for season 2...and I just finished the season 1 finale 10 minutes ago.
