Pretty Good!
3 July 2020
I'm not very big on horro movies, but I do like some of these horror-comedy type. And this one was was very entertaining. Its always fun to watch entertaining redneck/country comedies that are actually made by real folks, not just for making fun of the "dumb hicks". Kind of like Lewis Grizzard, the Blue Collar Comedy Tour, or the good ol' boys of the Burt Reynolds stock company, rednecks having fun while making fun of themselves (and others!). Definitely not politically correct, which is all the better. I especially like the part with the "zombie" college kids looking for mushrooms. Good movie for both cult horror fans and those like me who usually don't watch horror/camp films but love entertaining redneck movies!

Surprisingly Good
12 January 2019
I only checked this show out because it was on after Last Man Standing, but I was pleasantly surprised. I'm only 32 but have thoroughly enjoyed every episode I have seen and suggest everyone at least check out this new show and hope that it continues to entertain.

Good Eastwood Western!
8 November 2018
A well-acted well-written Eastwood western, his first American-made Western. While not a big fan of most of his westerns this Eastwood western is different and has the feeling of one from the classic Western-era of the 40s, 50s, or early 60s, evoking John Ford/John Wayne. Very entertaining with good character actors that fans of westerns will immediately recognize. In fact, I believe that this is my second favorite western of Eastwood (next to the classic The Outlaw Josey Wales)!

You should see it, but view it with a grain of salt.

As a vet and from a family where every male is a vet, I have to say this movie is one of the reasons why there is still a vastly skewed view of the Vietnam War in popular culture. I do believe the film has it's good points, but its damage to the common view of Vietnam vets is undeniable.

I realize Oliver Stone was a vet, but the view is obviously one-sided. Charlie Sheen's character is based on him and therefore every character is seen through him. Everyone who smokes dope and hangs out in the psychedelic bunker are certainly the good guys and are of course the heroic, top-grade soldiers. Their "leader" is Willem Dafoe's Elias. Meanwhile the other side, led by Tom Berenger's Barnes, are just a bunch of dumb rednecks. They sleep in a bunkhouse with Confederate battle flags on the wall, drink beer and whiskey, and listen to Merle Haggard. In the field they are either incompetent cowards or crazed murderers who kill unarmed innocent women and children for fun.

If you want a more realistic portrayal of the ground war in Vietnam, We Were Soldiers is your best bet, followed closely by The Green Berets (at least the first two-thirds, before the "commando" mission) and the Vietnam part of Forrest Gump.

Delta Farce (2007)

It's funny, why don't y'all give it a break?!
30 March 2018
Now, I bought this movie for a dollar at Goodwill, so I wasn't expecting much, but it turned out to be pretty funny. Sure, it's not smart or examining any deep issues, but it's not supposed to: it's supposed to make you laugh! And that is exactly what it did. I usually get really annoyed when I see serious movies with obvious military inaccuracies, but when it's almost pure comedy, I really don't care.

Stripes is lauded as a great movie, but it's plot was even dumber and it actually tried to be serious in some parts and it had far more military inaccuracies. Plus, I think Delta Farce is much funnier! So just why doesn't everybody just enjoy the movie for what is and have some laughs.

P.S. The saving of the town while blaring "Eastbound and Down" (my favorite song ever, by the way) from Smokey and the Bandit is just awesome. I sometimes pull out the movie just to watch that one scene!

By Dawn's Early Light (1990 TV Movie)

Excellent Nuclear Thriller!
6 June 2015
"By Dawn's Early Light" is one of the best nuclear thriller's around. It came out as the Cold War was ending, but it is even more prevalent now, as it opens with accidental launch by Russian dissidents. The current situation in Ukraine comes to mind. In any case, the movie does a great job, especially for made-for-TV (HBO) film that also has pretty good special effects for the time and budget. The acting is top notch, with special nods going to James Earl Jones as the tough, fair, and smart Major General Alice, Powers Boothe as the determined Major Cassidy flying the main B-52, and Martin Landau as the President trying to do the right thing. Also, the short appearance of Nicolas Coaster as General Renning at the beginning to the film is also notable. This is a great nuclear thriller, right up there with the classic Dr. Strangelove but from a different perspective. Highly recommended!

Very Entertaining Wayne Western!
20 April 2015
The Commancheros is an excellent Western, staring the ultimate western star of all-time, John Wayne as a Texas Ranger Captain. Co-staring Stuart Whitman as a suave gambler/gunfighter and Ina Balin as the beautiful love interest, the film is fast-paced from beginning to end. The picture also features a then relatively unknown Lee Marvin in a small but important role.

The movie features spectacular locales and a thoroughly entertaining score by Elmer Bernstein. The story, while not that deep, does the job adequately and develops the characters well during the course of the film. There is plenty of action from start to finish, including several good-sized battles with Commanches and their white allies versus the All-American Rangers in classic "white hat" against "black hat" style. The various story lines seem to be completely separate at many points in the movie but they all eventually come together for a climactic finish. The only true flaws deal with the anachronistic use of weapons from a much later period (1870s rifles and pistols being used in 1843), but that is a relatively minor point that can be easily ignored in a movie that is obviously not trying to be a history lesson. Wayne is in admirable form in his standard role and seems to be enjoying himself throughout the film.

While The Commancheros doesn't have the symbolism and deeper meaning of the most John Ford-directed westerns, if you're looking for a good afternoon movie to sit back and enjoy then this thoroughly entertaining western is for you. Two thumbs up!

A Very Entertaining Film
19 January 2015
I thoroughly enjoyed Starship Troopers, having read the book beforehand. While it is different from Heinlein's original novel, Starship Troopers is a very good action-oriented sci-fi film that most people will enjoy. You can watch it as pure entertainment, which it does a very good job at; or you can watch it and analyze the underlying themes, plots, and the attempts it makes at being more like the book. Either way, you won't be disappointed. All of the main actors do a decent job and Michael Ironside does a superb job in a significant supporting role. The special effects are quite good and the director (Verhoeven) keeps the story moving along at a fast pace while still allowing the audience to get to know and care about the characters. There is a large amount of violence in this picture, so you won't like the film if you can't stand a good bit of blood and gore (both human and alien). This violence, however, just makes the mood of the movie seem more realistic with the "down on the ground" feeling of war that this film attempts to impart to the viewer.

Not the Greatest Movie Ever, But Still Entertaining
24 May 2013
While Police Academy 6: City Under Siege is certainly no cinematic masterpiece, it is a very entertaining and funny film that gets a bad rap, probably in part to how bad the previous and following films in the series were. Police Academy 6 is actually, in my opinion, the best of the sequels and is rather funny if you give it a chance.

The main characters from the previous film are all here, with Michael Winslow (as Jones), Bubba Smith (as Hightower), David Graf (as Tackleberry), and G.W. Bailey (as Harris) as the main characters, with the other half dozen good supporting actors. The main story, about a gang rampaging a certain part of town, is not exactly rocket science but it also isn't the dumbest, either. The film is aimed at a younger audience, but adults should enjoy the numerous jokes, especially Harris' overbearing scenes, Jones' sound effects, and Tackleberry's use of firearms and his obvious joy in driving Bigfoot during the awesome chase scene.

While maybe the not greatest comedy, if you are looking for some simple fun, I'd say Police Academy 6 is a very good and entertaining film. Give it a chance and you shouldn't be disappointed.

Gettysburg (1993)

Greatest Civil War Film Ever!
8 May 2010
Gettysburg is the greatest Civil War film ever made and one of the best war movies, period. It has everything that a great movie should include, from excellent acting to riveting action, from beautiful cinematography to a stirring musical score.

The acting in the film, especially by the three main characters Tom Berenger (Lt. Gen. James Longstreet), Martin Sheen (Gen. Robert E. Lee), and Jeff Daniels (Col. Joshua Chamberlain), is some of the best possible. They all express hardcore emotion without being over the top. The supporting cast is no less great in their roles, which really carries the film.

The battle scenes are some of the most stirring ever seen on film and my father still cannot watch the Pickett's Charge segment without tearing up. The accompanying music throughout the movie also lends to what is quite possibly one of the top ten movies of all time.

I highly recommend this movie to everyone, history/war buff or not. Trust me, don't be scared by the 4 hour length of the film, you won't even notice and you'll be glued to your seat!

Horrible Movie, Avoid at all Costs!
17 January 2008
This movie is complete PC-trash. It shows an unrealistic portrayal of a Confederacy that 99% of historian agree could not have existed, mainly since the CSA would never have taken over the US entirely. Plus, the Confederacy is seen as completely evil, when nothing is ever completely evil on Earth. I watched this movie with an open mind, but actually laughed at how racist some parts were. Not against Blacks, but against Southerners! Not to get into politics, but this film demands it- the film seems like an ultra-PC representation of America. If you want a good movie about the Civil War watch Gettysburg. If you want a good one about the aftermath, good luck. It has not been yet and it sure isn't this piece of garbage.

The Postman (1997)

Excellent Movie, Give it a Chance!
17 January 2008
The Postman is one of the best apocalyptic movies and you can write that down. It was one of those movies that was trashed because of Kevin Costner, who actually was a good performer in this film. The basic premise is that is 2013 and war/disease has ravaged the world (war destroying technology and disease annihilating the population) and people are basically living in mid-19th century society, technology-wise. Enter Costner and his false persona that rallies people into a very patriotic war. I have a feeling that the reason many critics don't like this movie is that it has a pro-American tint to it. It has the feeling of a 50s Western and could easily have starred John Wayne or Jimmy Stewart and it is an excellent and entertaining movie. Watch it and I'll let you be a judge.
