Touched by an Angel: A Winter Carol (2001)
21 years later
Just finished watching this episode and am sitting here with tears in my eyes. I'm surprised no one has written a review for this very special episode of such a beautiful series, and I am honored to do so. Here it is, Christmas Eve 2022 and, like everyone who was around on 09-11, I remember everything about that sad day and cannot believe it was 21 years ago. I was doing OK watching this episode until the end when the Mormon Tabernacle Choir started singing, and the tears started. Such a beautiful, moving moment, especially seeing everyone's reactions in this episode. It is obvious everyone involved in this episode of Touched By An Angel was moved as well. An episode worth watching, and remembering and honoring the loss we all suffered on that fateful day. I'll finish my review by simply stating the words to that wonderful hymn that was sung so beautifully: "His truth is marching on." Amen.
Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman: Pike's Peace (1995)
Such a wonderful show
I may be biased as Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman is one of my very favorite shows of all time and I can't count the number of times I have seen each episode. I just watched this episode again after not seeing it in several years and I had forgotten how great it is. I was so surprised to see the other review here giving it a one-word review - "Terrible" - and decided I wanted to write my own review to balance-out that questionable review. I loved that the writers gave the spotlight to a very inspirational older woman who definitely marched to the beat of her own drums and for the time period this show is set, went against the "norms" for women but was an inspiration for the younger people in town, especially the girls. Evidently this episode took as an inspiration a true story of a young woman who climbed Pikes Peak. Also, to me the most heartwarming part of this episode was at the end when both the sadness and beauty of life was shown in such a moving way - The "sadness" of the end of a life and the "beauty" of the beginning of life and how they were intertwined in this episode and happened at the same time. It was special. There really isn't a bad episode in this series, but this is one of the better ones, at least to me.
The Outer Limits: Tribunal (1999)
Emotionally spent after this brilliant episode
I will start this review by saying that I never saw any of The Outer Limits episodes from the '90s, but I did see some from the original series. Just recently, I happened to turn on the TV just as this episode of "Tribunal" was in its last few minutes and I was spellbound - So much so, that I ordered the entire series from eBay just so I could watch this episode from the beginning, which I just did. As it was ending, I was literally in tears. This entire episode was a master class in everything - Especially writing and acting. I don't think I have ever been moved so much by something on television. This should be required watching by everyone who desires that we learn from the past in order to not repeat it in the future. As I am writing this review, Russia is continuing its horrendous and unprovoked war on its sovereign neighbor Ukraine, all because of a modern-day Hitler (Russia's dictator Putin) wanting more land and more power, and solely because of this one man, atrocities, brutalities and war crimes are being committed on Ukraine's innocent civilians, including women, children and the elderly. It is almost like Nazi Germany all over again, but without the gas chambers. So, it would seem humanity still has not learned from its past. I pray that we will eventually, and because of the faith and hope I cling to, I believe one day we will. The very end of this episode really resonated with me. Just before the end credits, a voice over is heard saying the following: "The wounds of war run deep, cutting across generations. But there is always the hope of healing, so long as there are souls among us whose hearts are more full of love than hate." May it be so. Amen.
I Love a Mama's Boy (2020)
Talk about pathetically creepy
Watching this show is like watching a train wreck that you just can't look away from. It's really difficult to imagine that this is real, but I actually saw one of these couples (Matt and Kim) and his mother, of course on (I think) Dr. Phil and it honestly appears to be real. First, these "men-boys" have never grown-up, and will never grow-up - They are allowing their mothers to stay No. 1 in their lives, including being a part of literally everything in their lives, including, and sometimes to the exclusion of, their girlfriends, and the truly insane thing is that their girlfriends stick around in spite of this. This is a very sick and twisted show, but like I said, it's like a train wreck and I can't look away. This is becoming a guilty pleasure that I cannot believe I'm actually watching.
God Friended Me: The Mountain (2020)
The Mountain
I have loved this series so much and looked forward to it every week. It reminded me a lot of "Touched By An Angel" back in the 90's. There are so few shows anymore that give such a good feeling along with showing faith, and this show didn't shove faith at you - It let you take it in at your own pace, which even as a Christian myself, I appreciated. To hear that this show was canceled was devastating as it truly was one of the few shows on anymore that was just a good, sweet show with important lessons for anyone. This series finale was an interesting one and I have a feeling it wasn't exactly what they were wanting as the finale but possibly was rushed to try and finish it by wrapping it all up. I kept thinking that Miles' mother was somehow going to be a part of it, and I wonder if she was? SPOILER: At the very end, I honestly wonder if the "she" that was mentioned was his mother and that the God Account (that I believe was truly God) was going to reward him with seeing her again? Just my theory. Still a great show and I will miss it.
This Is Us: Clouds (2020)
Such a beautifully written, acted and incredibly moving episode
Oh my goodness, where to start? First, this is truly one of the most moving series I have ever had the pleasure of watching on TV. I don't know how the writers are able to continue making every episode better than the last. "Clouds" has it all - Very emotional flashbacks from the past that then directly correlate to what is happening in the present time. The actors are phenomenal here. And Sterling K. Brown's performance? Wow. And the music? Oh my God. Joni Mitchell and then Graham Nash and "Our House"? One of my favorite songs ever! I may have to sit here, take it all in, and watch it again. Brilliant. Can't wait until next week to see how the writers are able to top this.
A Dog's Way Home (2019)
Wonderful little warm-fuzzy dog movie
I just went and saw this little gem of a movie over the weekend and thoroughly enjoyed it. Everyone else in the theater with me seemed to be enjoying it as well - We all laughed and cried at just the right moments. I glanced down through some of the reviews and, sure enough, there were the inevitable "thumbs-down" reviews, which, unfortunately, doesn't surprise me. My theory on why there are always going to be "those people" who will find the negative in literally anything is that there are two kinds of people in the world: The glass half-empty type and the glass half-full type. I guess I'm in the later type as I usually always look for the positive - Of course, there is also the direct opposite of that kind of person and that is the person who always looks for the negative. So, if you aren't sure if you want to see this wonderful movie or not, just ask yourself what type of person are you? You will then have your answer. By the way, I can't end this review without mentioning the very special little dog who was the star of this movie - Bella, whose real name is "Shelby" - A rescue who was found in deplorable conditions in Tennessee. It's my understanding that the author, W. Bruce Cameron, was determined to use a rescue and a little diamond was found and saved, which made this movie all the more special.
The Stray (2017)
Heartwarming Story
I am a sucker for dog stories and true stories and when you put the two together, to me, it's magical. I just finished watching "The Stray" on DVD after finding it at Walmart. I had not heard of it before, but the cover reeled me in. Unfortunately, I am not surprised at the negative reviews here because there will always be those who will find the negative in anything. I guess I am more of a "glass-is-half-full" person. I found this to be a very sweet and touching story, even though there is a scene toward the end that was a little difficult to watch. At the same time, it is life, and sometimes life itself can be difficult to get through, and it's what we do at those times that brings out our true character. If you would like something to help lift you up and give your faith a bit of a boost, in addition to some beautiful scenery, you can't go wrong with this little gem of a movie. It simply touched me.
Unleashing Mr. Darcy (2016)
What a waste of 2 hours
Just finished (barely) sitting through 2 excruciating hours of the worst Hallmark movie I have ever seen. The acting was horrible and there was zero chemistry between the main actors. The whole thing was completely unbelievable. The only redeeming factor were the dogs. They were more believable than any of the characters. Plus they were adorable.
Downward Dog (2017)
Love Love Love everything about this show
Like Reviewer "aeasmmikey", I also don't understand all the negative reviews. I started reading the reviews expecting to see people, like me, really enjoying this terrific new show, and was surprised at all the negativity. This is my very first IMDb review and I'm doing it solely because I absolutely love this show and want it to have more positive reviews. This little gem actually makes me smile and I even sometimes laugh out loud. I saw Ned the Dog, along with the actress who plays the lead, on Good Morning America recently and loved the fact that "Ned" is a rescue that the people involved with this show found and thought he had wonderful eyes. He does have very expressive eyes and the person who voices for him is absolutely perfect! I can almost imagine that "Martin" is really speaking, I kid you not! I look forward to this show now every week and really hope that it catches on. It really is a sweet little show with a lot of very good lessons everyone can learn from, canine and human.
