Somehow disappointing
25 June 2006
As a fen of Dan Brown's novel, I must admit I was rather disappointed by the movie. The worst part was the casting - neither Tom Hanks, nor Audrey Tautou were right for their parts. Perhaps, only Ian McKellen and Paul Bettany fitted my imagination. Also, some important parts of the book were skipped and I believe it would be hard for someone who doesn't know the story, to follow it completely. This also stole from the tension and dynamics, which are crucial to "The Da Vinci Code". I must mention that the effects were good and there were some amusing moments that made the film entertaining. So, I suppose those who haven't read the book would enjoy the movie; fens of the novel, on the other hand, will be frustrated.

Just what it is ought to be
7 January 2006
I adore Jane Austen's novel, so I went to see the movie with a little skepticism, convinced that it would be a weak attempt to retell a great story. I was, however, surprised by the fact that the film followed the book almost precisely - there were no big lapses in the story and no annoying elements, added by the director. Keira Knightley gives a very good performance, presenting Elizabeth exactly as I imagine her, and the other actors surely succeed to create an atmosphere almost the same as the one Austen has created. Applause also for Judy Dench, who is perfect for the role of Lady Catherine De Bourg. What I consider to be the flaw of the movie, is the little attention given to Jane and Bingley's relationship, which is certainly not as important as the one of Lizy and Darcy, but really deserves a little more. Basically, if you are a fen of the novel, you'll get what you want from the movie. And if you just want a witty romantic story, you won't be disappointed either. 8/10 for this one!

Exciting and touching
1 December 2005
I always prefer the book more than the film. But in this case I actually haven't read the novel, so I cannot be disappointed with the movie not presenting it fully or correctly. The film brilliantly merges both the touching of a romantic story and the excitement of a mystery. It took my breath away in moments, it made me smile much, and even cry at times. I think that the choice of the two main actors is really the right one. There is something in their eyes that makes them a perfect couple in this story. And being a huge Gwineth Paltrow fen, I cannot miss to mention her enigmatic presence and excellent play. I am sure that history fens, especially those who enjoy mysteries like "The Da Vinci Code" with clues so hard to find and at the same time so obvious, would really love "Possessions". And all the others, who have hearts.

Real. In its own way.

It won't be enough to say that Nighly and McDonald make this film brilliant. I am actually torn apart about whether the movie is great for the message it contains, or because of the play of both of them. On one side, I see a love story, kind of unusual, a story just about the two of them, filled with feelings, meaningful dialogs, and also pain. On the other hand, there is this important issue, these striking statistics, these important decisions to be made. And not just for two people in love, but for the entire planet. And so the film consists of two levels, brilliantly combined and glued by the play of Lorence and Gina. I didn't want it to end like this though. I hoped that it will be all right at the end. But this ending makes it all even more... brilliant. Yes, it perfectly finishes a not-absolutely-happy story. But a real story. So, shortly, I loved the movie and I recommend it. But don't see it if you just want a romantic, Saturday-night story. It is romantic in its own way. But it's mostly real.

Surprisingly surprising
4 September 2005
This film was absolutely not what I expected it to be. In the first half an hour, I even got a little bored, because it seemed like the story was going nowhere. Fortunately, I got my happy ending - no, not at all a film with a happy ending, just an ending that makes the film precious! It really makes you stare at the black screen, with the cast moving in front, and think about what you've seen over and over again. Of course, the brilliant play of Rachel Weisz cannot be left unmentioned, but I think that the others did a great job as well. "The Shape of things" is a film with actually just four actors and one great idea, and trust me, it is worth seeing. I am just wondering how would I feel the second time I watch it!
