Ugly Betty (2006)
Hurry up and watch this show!
What a pleasure. I like Betty so much that not only did I watch all the episodes that aired this season, but am now watching the marathon.
The cast is fantastic and the dialogue believable. America Ferrera has taken the ridiculous aspects of her character's naive behavior and made them appealing, not an easy task.
Salma Hayek's stint as Sofia was just a magnificent bonus; a cherry on top of the best possible sundae. She brought tremendous sex appeal to the show, of course. More important than that, her character embodies a woman's best asset - her brain. I absolutely love watching her. She is a fearless woman who takes the bull by the horn in Hollywood. As an actress, instead of crying about how there are no great parts written for latina women, she has created her own production company.
Back to the show. I'm glad Salma decided to produce it. Betty's travails provide a solid hour of entertainment in an otherwise hectic and very stressful week. I look forward to each episode because I can unwind and at times, actually laugh out loud.
I hope the show continues for many years to come. It is a true gem.
I can't wait to see what happens next!
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006)
A Pirate's Life for Me!
Ahoy, mates! You all need to go see this movie NOW. It is that good. In fact, it is as good as the first one, if not better because it is funnier AND it has great action scenes.
The cast is back (with a few surprises) and their performances are as engaging as they were the first time around. I liked Johnny Depp better in this movie - his character shows more dimension.
Orlando Bloom still reminds me of Errol Flynn, incredibly handsome and dashing on screen; the camera loves that young man. Keira Knightley has more to do in this movie and she delivers.
I don't want to reveal plot points. I do warn you, though, that young children should not see this movie because it has scenes that would be scary to them (I should know, I am an Elementary School Teacher).
The only complaint I have is that the movie could have been shorter. The end of the movie is FABULOUS and well worth the price of the ticket.
Verbinsky has done his job well - I cannot wait 'till next summer! Savvy?
Chicken Little (2005)
Cute, but that is all.
I rented this movie with high expectations. After all, Chicken Little is one of the cutest children's books around.
Well, I must say I was disappointed. The movie was a let down because with such an excellent cast, a better written script would have turned it into an instant classic.
The action needed to be tighter and the dialogue should have retained the wit shown at certain times. The movie was downright boring at the beginning. It isn't until the aliens show up that the movie really hits its stride.
I think very small children will love it, but parents will find the rewards hard to come by.
Too bad. Loved the pig, Runt of the Litter, though. Steve Zahn proves once again how brilliant he is.
Superman Returns (2006)
Rush to the theater, folks!
My family watched the first show this morning in our local IMAX theater. Now that I've calmed down a little bit, I can write here.
Truth be told, I had incredibly high expectations for this movie, and they were met...mostly. The reason I gave the movie an 8 instead of a 10 is that I don't think Kevin Spacey makes the best Lex Luthor; he didn't really intimidate me, if you know what I mean. Then again, maybe they should have cast someone less known in that role too. I am so accustomed to watching Michael Rosenbaum play Lex in Smallville, were he really IS the man you love to hate, that Spacey disappointed me. Bring on the hate mail, Spacey lovers!
Anyway, I would never spoil a movie for someone. The movie is great, it draws you in and, of course, the special effects are awesome. However, all I really want to say is this. If, when you hear the first stanzas of that famous Superman score, you do not start bawling because:
1. Christopher Reeves is gone, AND
2. You've waited so long to see Superman again on screen that you feel overwhelmed...
then you ARE NOT a Superman fan...or you have no heart and are related to Lex.
LONG LIVE SUPERMAN! and thank you, Bryan Singer. You rule.
Playing House (2006)
Watch this movie!
I wish I had known how good this movie was going to be; I would have recorded it. The previous poster already explained the plot. I want to add that the characters are well written and you will end up caring about what happens to them. The two leads have fantastic chemistry - he is HOT! I loved that the movie made me laugh. Many scenes did not feel contrived. It's not the usual "girl is in mortal danger and an idiot" plot or the "my love is going to change the man I love" crap.
Anyway, just go ahead and watch it. If you like romantic comedies, you should tape it. I am in my forties and this movie felt like the writers were not talking down to me or like I was wasting my time. I wish Lifetime would develop more believable stories like this one.
