This movie is incredibly f'd up and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Entertaining gore-humor at its best. Mimi is an extremely entertaining little psychopath.

Really captured my imagination
5 June 2022
I love the way that this show blends ancient mythology, local culture, and modern issues (and does so in the language of the place). It's hard not to draw parallels with American Gods (which I love), but I think the tighter, more local approach in this is even more interesting. The claustrophobic small-town social dynamics add a lot.

I would love to see more shows like this from people around the world, blending ancient tales with contemporary trends and issues in the native land of those tales.

Almost good
28 May 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I liked most of the movie. The atmosphere was good, the characters were convincing, and I liked the underlying depiction of power, consent, and abuse. However IMO this was all trivialized by the ending. The flying possession thing was not necessary and ruined the seriousness of the scene. I think it would have been better if she had killed the pedo doctor in a fit similar to the other ones, with nothing physically impossible being shown but still giving the strong impression of a supernatural force.

Good after a weak start
7 May 2022
At the beginning there were some plot holes (or at least some improbable failures of planning by women with PhDs and military training).

Overall though it was a very good movie and a good sci-fi premise once it gets into the actual meat of the story. And the visuals are gorgeous, some really great shots in there. I enjoyed it, but I wonder if it might have been better as a mini-series, there was a lot that could have been fleshed out.

I suspect they had to leave some important things out for the sake of brevity.

Uneven quality, but very creative and cool
6 January 2019
I agree with the reviewer who said the movie seemed "half-baked". But I thoroughly enjoyed watching it and each story had its own charm. Story 1: Had some genuinely creepy moments. I liked both actors, especially the woman had a very compelling character. Story 2: Both absurd and creepy. Liked. Story 3: Also pretty creepy even though a little predictable and with a somewhat lame ending. I loved the mother. Story 4: This one is almost like a Twilight Zone episode. Loved it. Story 5: I liked both actors, and their dialogue was awesome. Story 6: I used to fantasize about this hypothetical when I was a child, so I found this one very interesting. Container story: Meh. But wow, Sameera Reddy is a real beauty!

2008: A Hipster Odessey
30 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I think this film was probably harmed by the extremely high ratings that some people gave it, which makes some people hate it more than they normally would.

What I liked: The vibe: I though it was genuinely creepy at multiple points. I had no idea where the plot was going, and had fun wondering. The actors were good at making me not like them. The creepy dude was creepy AF. They were definitely a good portrait of whack NY hipsters circa 2008. Also, there were some genuinely cool nature shots.

I disliked: After getting me all curious, the end was a huge let-down. It was a lot of build-up for such an ambiguous end. All of a sudden I felt like I was in a hipster-horror version of the end of 2001. Which I have to admit being entertained by, but still, I think it was a cop-out. The low quality filming didn't ruin the movie, but didn't do it any favors either. Also, what was with the random flashes to scenes of a busy intersection? Was this the key to truly loving this movie and I somehow failed to grasp the significance? I doubt it.

Very cool

Warning: Spoilers
I liked this movie a lot. The plot had lots of interesting twists and turns and kept me guessing. The pacing was good and I wasn't bored at any point. However, I thought the ending was a little too happy to be credible, especially the part about Sheriff's death sentence being commuted (granted I don't know anything about Egyptian law, so I don't really know what "believable" means in this context). Also, LOL at DMT in pill form (and the trip sequence didn't seem very DMT-like). But these are minor quibbles, I heartily recommend this to anyone who likes a good story.

Tim Curry is my only Pennywise
15 September 2017
This was not an awful movie, but it just isn't as good as the 1990 version. I liked the way they updated it to take place in 1989 instead of the 1950's, and the changes they made to the story were rather cool in that there were surprises even though I am familiar with the story, and it showed parts that were left out of the 1990 version. And no disrespect to the guy who played Pennywise here, he was a good creepy clown, but he just didn't bring the magic the way Tim Curry did. I'm still hopeful about the sequel though.. I think doing a story of this size in two parts was the right call.

Gratuitous use of Shakespeare is awesome
3 September 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I liked this as a movie, but what makes it special is the Shakespeare dialog around each murder. On its own, it would be a pretty decent slasher/thriller and is truly creepy at times, but Vincent Price doing Shakespeare is a treat and makes this a special experience. The sets are really cool too. I wholeheartedly recommend this.

The perfect action/historical fantasy movie?
10 June 2017
Beautiful to watch, past paced, engaging story, poignant at times. It never came of as overwrought or corny, which is a feat because this type of story could easily come off as melodramatic or campy. The cinematography and martial arts sequences were absolutely stunning. This movie was everything I want a historical action flick to be.

Highly entertaining
30 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Perhaps not the high point of the cinematic arts, but a fun movie and a treat for the eyes (not just because of the women's bodies). The pace is good, it never gets boring or annoying. If you're in the mood for action + softcore porn, this will fit the bill. Oh yeah, and the naked slow motion fight scene is a sight I won't soon forget. Also, the setting in Meiji Japan adds another layer of interest to what would still be a fun movie if it were set in Victorian England.

Cool star, bad movie
29 May 2017
I didn't find this movie very entertaining. Yes, it is fun for it's 60's camp and the girls, but the script is so awful that it makes even that hard to enjoy. I did however look up the star, Tura Santana, and wow, what a bad@$$ in real life. Five of the six stars I gave this movie are for that. The movie may be corny, but she sounds like the real deal.

A forgotten gem
20 May 2017
I'm not sure how "forgotten" this movie is, but I had never heard of it until recently. I love the genre of horror, and this is as good as it gets. While it has nothing in the way of gore or jump scares, the plot develops into something truly twisted and disturbing. All the roles are very well acted and convincing, which makes the deeply creepy subject matter even creepier. If you like horror/Gothic stories at all, this one is a must.

Low energy horror.
20 May 2017
I don't get why this is so highly rated. I thought the stories were bland and had nothing really to recommend them. I guess the comics they are based on are classics or something. But I don't see why anyone would bother to make them into film. The stories aren't very interesting, the images are neither beautiful nor grotesque, and it just isn't very entertaining to watch.
