Luchshe, chem lyudi (2018)
Story is good; dubbing is terrible
I started watching this with the dubbing, which I almost never do, because I was sleepy and my eyes were too tired to rely on the subtitles. I almost always watch foreign films in the original language, and this series proves that I was right to do so. Is dubbing always this bad? Yikes! I like the story, even though it's a bit derivative. I got caught up in it and watched it all over several nights. Switching over to the original language makes it much more watchable.
Earthquake (1974)
Saw this when pregnant
My biggest memory about this is that I saw it in the theater when I was pregnant with my first child. The Sensurround sounded like a gimmick before we went into the theater, but when it started, the baby about kicked me to death. :-) I was sore for days afterward. Poor baby! The mirrored effect they used to make the skyscraper "sway" was pretty silly, but back in those days they didn't have the special effects we do today. I'm rewatching it on TV right now, and it really takes me back in time. A fun way to spend a couple of hours but definitely not a masterpiece by any means.
Mata Batin (2017)
I wanted to like it
What happened to the days when Asian horror was innovative and scary? This movie is not just a ripoff of Asian horror of 20 years ago, it's also a ripoff of American movies like The Sixth Sense. I keep hoping I'll find a scary movie one of these days. This definitely isn't it. It *does* kind of work as a comedy, though.
A Very English Scandal (2018)
Absolutely brilliant!
I enjoyed every single second of this mini series. The actors are perfectly cast. The writing is superb. I love British TV and watch a ton of it, and this is one of my all-time favorites. I wish it were longer than three episodes. I can't say I've ever been that big a fan of Hugh Grant, but he's wonderful in this. Ben Winshaw is fabulous. Enjoyable in every way. Bravo!
Sense8 (2015)
Your fast-forward finger will get blisters
I wanted to find a series to watch on Netflix because, let's face it, I've watched everything on there--some series more than once (I know what that says about my life). But I hadn't watched Sense8, and I thought I'd give it a try. And I've stayed with it because I kind of wanted to see where they would take it. Plus, I just got back from my second trip to Iceland, and I was keen to see where they filmed. But I've probably fast-forwarded through 50% of it. I can't bring myself to care about the characters. I'm a big LGMT advocate, and I have no problem with nudity. But is it really necessary to have so many gratuitous sex scenes? Over and over and over again? And the whole stupid group having sex? Come on! Let's spend some time on the actual story, the chase, etc. I guess I'll finish it (only because I'm halfway through season two and I hate to admit defeat), but I will definitely be skipping large portions of it. I simply can't understand why this has such a high rating here. I usually trust IMDb to steer me right, but in this case it didn't. I can understand why this POS got canceled. I've loved most of Netflix's original content, but this is a huge let-down.
Better Call Saul (2015)
Best show on television
After watching Breaking Bad, I never thought television could produce that quality of entertainment again. Not ever again. Breaking Bad was the best thing ever done, and nothing could top it. But I think I was wrong. Better Call Saul thrills me with each episode in a way that Breaking Bad didn't. I think the difference is because Walter White wasn't a very sympathetic character, and you can't help but love Jimmy. I've loved Bob Odenkirk's comedy for years, and I wouldn't have thought he was such an excellent dramatic actor. He's fabulous as Jimmy/Saul. And Michael McKean! Who knew? It's wonderful to see Jonathan Banks and Giancarlo Esposito again, too. The whole cast is stellar. And I don't even know where to start with the writing. I hope they keep this show around for a long time. But why do these shows now only have 10 episodes? It's an agonizingly long wait for the next season. But it's definitely worth the wait. I love, love, love this show.
