Smile (2022)
Not a bad watch
I watched this on a whim as it kept showing up in my suggestions. Looked a bit ridiculous to me at first (smiling is scary?) but I actually found myself enjoying it. Is it a masterpiece of cinema or anything? No, but it's a solid movie that doesn't rely on buckets and buckets of blood just for the sake of it. There are a fair amount of jump scares but I didn't feel it was as overdone as many are. If you aren't looking too crazy deep and picking apart any holes you find it's not a bad movie at all. I found the therapist to be fairly likable, if a bit inept at her job in the beginning. Doesn't much matter though since she starts to spiral pretty quickly after she encounters the patient in the beginning, so really who cares about her therapy abilities lol.
Devil's Island (2021)
Wow...
So, normally I really enjoy slow burning thrillers that don't rely on jump scares and buckets of blood just for the hell of it. However.....this one is just awful. There is essentially no plot. At all.
This girl is given an island as an inheritance from her grandparents who died (no explanation as to how they died) and she up and moves in. Finds someone has been in her home..then the mute lady tells her to leave because of "dangerous people". She refuses and the mute lady has gone before she can even turn around. The one man who was nice to her is seemingly snatched by the "bad guys?" Who seem to have something to do with wolves as the imagery was seen a few times and a wolf mask is left at the man's house. The girl was given a picture of 5 masked (wolf) men in a photo by the mute lady the day she saw her.
There are almost no characters other than the ones mentioned and the sheriff. Who is very dismissive of everything she says the whole movie until she shoots the one man who tried to attack her with a hammer and kills him. The sheriff's explanation was the man had a shrine to her. At the end we see the lead load up her shotgun then it cuts to morning and she's standing there on her island covered in blood it seems? And that's the end. Exactly ZERO loose ends were tied up. None. Who were the people in the photo? Who was this "wolf" people cult group whatever? What happened that last night? Did she slaughter everyone on all the surrounding islands? Who took/killed the man who was helping her? He had told her to meet him somewhere secret so he could explain but was taken before that of course. This movie is a complete waste of time unless you enjoy spending 1.5 hours of your life just to not know what happened. Wish I could get that time back...sooo frustrated.
Vivarium (2019)
Kinda on the fence with this one
The beginning of this movie had me quite pulled in. I like the premise, where these characters are trapped inside a world where there suddenly is nothing and no one else. They don't really know how they got there and they definitely don't know how to get out. Touring one house has suddenly changed and, arguably, ruined their entire life. Then they are dropped a baby in a box and told if they raise it they'll be released. The bay turns into a boy who is clearly not human. Though it is never disclosed what he is. The movie just gets darker and darker and more and more hopeless the longer it goes on.
The boyfriend gets sicker and sicker and we don't know what's wrong with him. We are never told. The boy gets stranger and there is never any explanation there either. Then it all culminates into what was, in my opinion, a very un-satisfying ending.
Idk. I really am on the fence with this one. There are parts of it I liked and think were done well, but then there are other parts that I really think just kind of dragged out without going anywhere. It's maybe worth a watch if you're bored and enjoy a very bleak slow burn.
Velma (2023)
If I could rate it 0 I would
Scooby Doo is a classic...this is a series of TV shows and movies that has been around forever. I grew up on it. Now you release an "origin series" where the characters are completely different people?? Makes absolutely zero sense. I know in this day and age everyone is obsessed with turning Caucasian characters into minorities but this is too far, there is no reason for this. Just write a new detective show with new characters; I'd have watched that and almost certainly enjoyed it. But instead you thought it was a good idea to destroy the existing show. I don't know anyone who likes this new version; black, white, yellow or green. It's stupid. You can't take a show that has been around this long and completely change the characters looks, personalities and storylines. I couldn't even get through the first episode. Leave classic characters alone. Create new, better ones!
Sausage Party (2016)
Awful. Excellent. A disaster and a masterpiece
This movie is definitely not for everyone. It is crass, irreverent, full of crude sexual innuendos, racial stereotypes, drugs, sex and violence. If none of this bothers you it's great lol. It's essentially a movie about a bunch of food in a grocery store that doesn't know when it gets bought it's going to be eaten. Once they find out all chaos ensues. And one of the very last scenes is.... A lot.... To say the least. Like I said it's not for everyone but I found it hilarious. It even has a few of the stereotypes who hated each other in the beginning end up "friends" in the end. It's not a wholesome moment or anything, but still lol. Worth a watch if you like dark/dirty humor.
Why Women Kill (2019)
Pleasantly surprised.
I am not sure why I even started watching this. I just kind of accidentally clicked it thinking it was a movie that wouldn't hold my attention (so I could fall asleep) and was hooked quickly. It's got a different feel to a plot that's quite often overdone, so it makes it feel completely new. I binged the whole first season over 2 nights. Definitely worth the watch! It is predictable in that you know there will be death of course..and you kind of already know who, but you don't know how or why. And that changes a few times over the course of the season. It has just enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. I just started the second season. I hope it's as good!
Fear of Rain (2021)
Surprisingly good
I actually liked this more than I expected to. It keeps you guessing as to what's real and what's not. The main character is schizophrenic and she seems to suffer from pretty severe symptoms making it hard to know what's actually happening and who's actually there in real life and what's just in her head. I thought it was a fairly unique plot. I don't see a whole lot of thriller/suspense type movies based around someone with schizophrenia, they're out there, but it just didn't feel overdone I guess. Not as predictable as a lot of other overdone plots. So even though it's not the best thing I've ever seen in my life or anything it definitely held my attention and I enjoyed it!
Teen Mom 2 (2011)
Ruined it by changing the cast.
Honestly I really liked this show until they added Ashley and Jade. Neither of them should be in the show, there were way better moms they could've included that people would've enjoyed watching. Ashley is just ratchet af, pure trashy drama and Jade is just not likeable. At all.. I didn't really like Brianna's addition much either, but she was better than the other 2. She's at least got some redeeming qualities.... I loved Chelsea, sad when she left but I understand. Kail and Leah are the only 2 left I like anymore.
Crawlspace (2016)
Predictable and unoriginal but not bad
This is not an original movie it's a plot that's been recycled so many times it's crazy. I did like how there were a couple mildly exciting twists. I knew how they'd all turn out but still, haha not bad. It's definitely not a "happy ending" though...was hoping at least one of them would make it out... plus it didn't really tie up any of the loose ends. Killed off this family and that's the end. Like:...no one checked back, or realized they took the wrong person to the hospital and went back to check where David was....just kind of an unsatisfying end.
Five Feet Apart (2019)
Tearjerker for sure
This is basically The Fault in Our Stars but with a different disease. I did really like the fault in our stars but I didn't hold very high hopes for this one because of how similar the plots looked. However, it managed to pull me in anyway and had me in tears by the end. They really do a good job of showing the loneliness of someone with CF and manage to stay mostly medically accurate (for movie standards anyway). If you're in the mood for a good cry this is a good one.
Water for Elephants (2011)
Pleasantly surprised
I am not a big fan of Robert Pattinson, but I feel like he was actually pretty good in this. I know the plot is kind of recycled as far as a guy falling for a taken woman and the drama that ensues from that. But I feel like the film actually feels like it's taking place in the time period it was set in and it is believable. This one was a pleasant surprise!
Lo imposible (2012)
Really emotional portrayals
I wasn't sure how I would feel about this one. Disaster movies tend to be kind of hit or miss in my opinion. But this movie is most definitely worth watching! Be forewarned that at times it is quite difficult, emotionally. At parts I flinched (watching them in the water being hit by anything and everything), and there were several scenes that drew tears, (both tears of heartbreak and pain and tears of joy for the positive moments). The movie did a really great job portraying the emotions that people felt on that tragic day. The dark and emotional nature of the subject made me glad that the family that it focused on had a happy ending otherwise it would have been even more challenging to watch. I do understand that many many people were killed and did not have happy endings and that is tragic, but for a movie like this I do feel that it was a good way to end it. If you're on the fence, definitely give it a watch.
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
Better than Hill House
I actually liked this better than the haunting of hill house. I'm not even really sure why. Just felt more ominous and creepy without being overtly horror. While I love horror I do get a bit bored of the cheap jump scares and buckets of gore that tend to accompany it sometimes. This is a nice change of pace. It's a slow burn so if you need something more fast paced this probably isn't for you but it was certainly one I enjoyed.
Hush (2016)
Surprisingly good!
I didn't expect a whole lot from this going in, but I was very pleasantly surprised. Good suspenseful plot that wasn't cheapened by a bunch of loud jump scares and screaming.

This Is Us (2016)
I loved this until season 5
Honestly was one of my favorite shows until it got all ridiculous this season :/.....people wearing masks outside their own homes and air hugging their own family and encouraging riots and protests over the death of a violent criminal. Talking about how they can't even see eachother without "testing and quarantining" for weeks first... Life is short, to encourage people to be afraid of something with a 99.6% recovery rate and to avoid friends and family is just really a sad way to live. Plus tv is supposed to be kind of an escape from all the craziness in our lives not an extension of it.
Pet Sematary (2019)
Kind of disappointed
I really wanted to love this. I'm a huge Stephen King fan and Pet Semetary was always one of my favorite books. While the original movie adaptation has terrible acting I still like it because it's a classic. And when I saw the preview for the remake I was excited, I figured with the technology and the stuff they can do with movies now they could really make this awesome and really scary. Unfortunately in my opinion a lot of the stuff came off looking pretty fake. There were a couple scenes with church (the cat) that were ridiculously fake looking, most of the gory bits were either not shown or they came across very fake. The jump scares with Zelda in the dumbwaiter were marginally creepy but as a rule I hate cheap jump scares. It wasn't a terrible movie, it just could have been a lot better. I know most people seemed to love it so it may just be me, maybe I had too high of expectations, idk. Also, I didn't love how much stuff they changed, for instance, killing Ellie instead of Gage. I get they wanted the creepy affect of having her talking about being dead or whatever when she came back which I can respect, but it was a huge change. And those scenes I didn't feel were very well done. If they had been maybe I'd have liked it better idk. Like I said, not terrible, but not great either.
The Cat in the Hat (2003)
This is the worst thing I've seen in a long time....
I don't even know where to begin. This is a PG movie supposedly made for kids....and it's full of innuendos, toilet humor, and humor/lines that are not appropriate for kids. At one point the cat picks up a garden hoe and calls it a "dirty hoe" and licks at it, if that gives you any idea...he mentions murder as a plan, yells "SON OF A B.." before being fake bleeped, etc. it just got worse and worse the longer I watched it. If they wanted to make an adult version of cat in the hat they should have made it pg13 or R and just run with it that way. Instead of this weird ass hybrid that doesn't work for either age group. I'm pretty sure Dr Seuss is rolling in his grave over this mess. It wasn't even funny or clever it was just painful to watch. I kept watching thinking there must be some redeeming qualities somewhere. But I was wrong. I didn't know this movie existed until recently but I wasn't missing out. I'll stick with classic dr Seuss.
The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
I'm conflicted.
I do enjoy this show and it has moments of creepy but idk that I'd classify it as a horror. I think it's more of a supernatural thriller. I'd previously read the book that this is loosely based on, and there are definitely major changes. Most of them made for a better narrative in my opinion. I like that the show didn't rely on buckets of blood or endless cheap jump scares. It's more focused on building a general atmosphere of unease. I can't quite agree it's "the best horror ever" like people I'm seeing but it's a solid show worth watching for sure.
American Horror Story (2011)
My favorite show
I absolutely love this show. There are some seasons that are better than others of course. But in general there has yet to be one I disliked, just a few I liked better than others. I love how it explores the darkness inside people, how far people will go to get something they want. And how so many people are really just looking out for themselves not giving a damn about anyone else. The show is genuinely disturbing in the best ways possible. At first, after watching Murder House, I was upset that it was going to be an anthology, recycling the same actors to play new characters in a completely different plot. But after watching the next season I was won over. And now they are beginning to link aspects of the seasons together as well. I hope that they continue the series, best horror show to come out in a long time.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
Pretty solid movie
I didn't really know what to expect from this, I like that it was a bit more original of a plot than a lot of the stuff that I've seen lately. It relied less on jump scares and buckets of blood (although there is an autopsy going on so some might find that gory, but it's quite clinical) and more on building a general sense of unease and doom. I like that they allowed viewers to use their imaginations as opposed to just going for shock value. There were area that could have been better, such as a lot of the interactions between the dad and his son. There was zero discussion. Like when the son decides to burn the body and just dumps gasoline on it, saying nothing, the father also says nothing and just lights a match. Or when they found the cat mangled, not a word was said. There were no questions or exclamations, they simply walked to the insinerator and burned it. Idk, the way the two interacted was my least part. Also when the boy was crying over his gf being axed to death it came off very fake. Came off a little more convincing when the father died. Still, overall an enjoyable movie.
Mara (2018)
Not scary but really not an awful movie
Idk why everyone is rating it so low. Was it the best movie I've ever seen? Definitely not. But it wasn't the worst either. There were plenty of areas that could have been improved but I kinda liked it overall. It's not a "blood and guts" movie and isn't full of terrifying jump scenes but does have a sort of sense of doom hanging over it that no matter what "Mara" will get you eventually. I do think some of the acting at times wasn't believable and I was a bit annoyed at some of the choices they made when putting it together. But for a low budget film it wasn't bad.
Stephanie (2017)
Better than I expected
I didn't really have high hopes for this after seeing the rating so originally I turned it on in the background while I was working on something else. I ended up finding myself sucked in though despite myself, so I started it over to see if I had missed anything important haha. It was a pretty original plot with some decent twists. I do wish there was a bit more background or they had summed up at the end what these things were, where they came from, did the world really just end? Etc.. but the plot had enough twists and turns to keep it interesting and the acting was good as well, particularly the actress playing the little girl, Im sure we will see her again.
