Reviews
Hustle (2022)
Excellent
Sandler proving again he is an extraordinarily talented actor and director. Pace. Drama. Execution. All encompassing film. Shows the same potential as (but a different vein) as Eastwood and Stallone (Rocky Vibes)...
Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)
Not Sawing High
Spiral is in my opinion, an attempt to reboot a very successful franchise. However, it lacks the suspense and instead focuses on new character development and drama.
There were some sawesque moments which were good. Just a little disappointed with the pace.
Worth a a watch...
Gemini Man (2019)
Good Action.
Some reviews here have cited the downfall of this movie to the writer. However, I have to say the ingredients for a good watch are here. Good pace, plenty of action, good CGI believable plot, insight into industrial cloning. Lacking in male female relations, but I guess that would make it a little cheesy.
A higher rating would be given if story slightly better.
Love, Guaranteed (2020)
Meets the Formula
A good and fast paced romantic comedy that explores the uneven ground of online dating.
Worth a watch!
The Lovebirds (2020)
Bland and predictable
These movies are like potatoes. So many possible outcomes - fries, chips, fritters even roast. They went for boiled potato. Very bland and average. Could have been good with a more engaging story line.
If you have nothing else, it passes the time. I would not recommend though.
Line of Duty (2019)
Die Hard meets Nancy Drew
Great mix of action, comedy and western culture.
Very entertaining. Some odd directing moments and bloopers but great for a Friday eve or lockdown blues.
21 Bridges (2019)
Temptation
Very good thriller. Remains interesting and thrilling
Anna (2019)
Average Action with Aesthetic Sweetner
It reminds me of a Bourne atmosphere. That strand of intellect mixed with action. Unfortunately, I think it also had boredom and unusual plot twists that seemed unnecessary.
I gave it a 6 as it seemed mildly entertaining with my glass red.
Rambo: Last Blood (2019)
Legend
It is tricky to write successful sequels, especially to a legendary movie franchise with a movie star a 100 years old playing an action hero.
But this movie delivers. It has grit. Suspense. Relevance. Gruesome scenes executed really well with the aid of CGI or Trumps sacrificial lambs.
Sylvester Stallone will hopefully be remembered for his contributions to film and television. He is a talented guy. Up there with Clint I think, although slightly more cheesy.
The Hustle (2019)
MIDLY Entertaining Trash
Rebel Wilson always delivers a couple of laugh out loud moments. This movie doesnt have quite as many as usual, but good hangover therapy.
It tries to be clever, but I think the writer / directors IQ doesnt quite match the objective.
I have seen worse and I have seen better. Fine to pass the time but wait until it is streamed. Dont buy it.
Dragged Across Concrete (2018)
Thriller
The premise of this movie is simple. You work hard and that does not always pay. Mel Gibson is nearing retirement and regardless of his 35+ year service to the police force he has little to show for it. He decides after suspension without pay, that crime will pay.
It is slow to unfold, but this adds to the suspense and atmosphere of the movie.
Lots of layers and details.
I pity those unfortunate people who are unable to penetrate this film and see it for everything it is worth. I might be as bold to say that unless you have experienced the underlying political nonsense then you will struggle to find empathy.
Another well directed movie.
Escape Plan: The Extractors (2019)
Impressive...
Is how Sly Stallone is held together at 103 years old.
The story was equally sewn together.
Some of the action sequences were okay, but this installment lacks the intricate prison puzzle that the first two had.
I am also disappointed that the female character seems a little subservient and weak. I understand this is still vogue in China, but there are still capable women.
It seems like a political knot between Chinese d American cinema.
Without Stallone this would be a 1
Rust Creek (2018)
Survival of the Smartest
Well paced and interesting with a few twists.
I didnt rate it 7 as I felt some bits were a little predictable.
Okay movie with Doritos n dip
I Accuse (2003)
Important moral and well put together
A good pace and important true story that holds the audience attention.
It is not a Hollywood budget, but the powerful story and good acting help make that irrelevant.
It is sad that this woman had to go through so much.
There is room for improvement but I feel it comes down to budget.
A good movie.
In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)
Excellent Story Idea
The movie has an intricate thread woven throughout, providing an intriguing denouement.
I would recommend giving this movie a watch. Dexter doesn't get too much of a role, but the idea behind the movie eclipses that excitement.
There is a definite build and lots of turns that keep the mind interested along with a nice twist, that you may predict.
I think it is slightly let down by the makeup team who cant seem to google wigs properly.
London Rampage (2018)
Modern Art
I like a good london manor movie. If that is what you are expecting, I would avoid this movie.
It is interesting and very contemporary. Stepping away from the template means that many won't like it. That is compounded by some ill-delivered lines.
There are some good action sequences and some tension built.
It is however, difficult to see what the message of the movie is. Especially given the last scene.
As a piece of film art, it is very good. Too intellectual for a relaxing movie experience though.
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019)
Holy Grail of Movies. Excellent.
It is no small task delivering a top rated movie, let alone doing that as a second sequel.
It is full of action and entertainment with a healthy sprinkle of comedy whilst developing the storyline and leaving the audience needing more.
An expensive example of where this was attempted but did not deliver is The Expendables. Plenty of action like John Wick but without the clever storyline.
The element or perhaps legend that brings this movie to life is Keanu Reeves.
Love the scenes with Halle Berry. She also delivers. Also love the guy on reception - am working on replicating his accent.
Excellent movie collection. Highly recommended. Look forward to JW4.
Bad Ass (2012)
Above Average
Good timings and directing. Let down by some sub par acting and special effects.
Overall, very watchable with a good pace.
Best served with popcorn and wine.
The Hollow Point (2016)
Can leave you feeling hollow.
This movie is for the few. It is difficult to unravel. You may feel the need at some point for your own bullet to the head. I did find that it made sense, but perhaps too intellectual.
It seemed like Jane Eyre attempting to write a Lee Childeseque novel. Over complicated flowery intellect where as what is required is much more simple.
It's as much as a thriller as Boris Johnson is a gangster. It's as cowboy as Postman Pat and romantic as me.
Sextuplets (2019)
Sexstupids
I think the makeup and special effects were very good.
The movie is a shadow of Martin Lawrence and his Big Mama or Eddie Murphy and his Nutty Pro and the legend that was Robin William's starring as Mrs Doubtfire.
I say shadow because I just felt a lot of the alleged humour was old and not so relevant. As well as not been very well timed or executed.
On top of that the story did not unravel well and the characters were not explored or developed in a way that really created empathy.
Having said that, there was one scene that was well executed. The bull scene. That was well timed and edgy. Really quite funny.
John Wick (2014)
One of the all time greats
John Wick has just the right balance of action, writing, direction and acting. Keanu Reeves is almost perfect.
A franchise in the making. Like The Equaliser and Jack Reacher but with an edge of class and an element of marvel almost.
I think this movie sets a standard that should be attempted by all forthcoming action. Of course they will not. But we can hope.
Naked Fear (2007)
Faked Near
One moment of good acting, (from the dad who was providing safe haven.) Aside from that, GCSE drama, set 3 on the last day at school.
There was roughly 10% action; scenes in the movie that actually justified this being pay rolled and released.
Another movie that spends a great deal of time degrading the role and ability of women.
Even the photography was amateur. That is inexcusable.
The lead female character I feel would have been okay with better direction and a more intelligent script, but I guess she did okay.
There is some nudity but it doesn't spill into cheap porno thank goodness.
There are so many better movies of this ilk. Perhaps it would have seen more success if she had escaped sooner and then followed the revenge that was touched on at the end.
I would recommend this movie if you are a little drunk and it is background. Otherwise nope.
Expo (2019)
Neighbours
It was like watching a badly directed version of a shocking episode of neighbours in the middle of a story line that didn't exist.
Some good acting from the girlfriend and the drug friend on occasion . Apart from that everything was bad. Sound effects. Makeup especially was terrible. Camera angles. Timing. Pace.
The police man. Wow. Totally off the mark.
It has made it onto Netflix so someone thought it was watchable. It is fine if you're bored or depressed although could make both of those things worse.
Momentum (2015)
More Salt required.
Lead female action characters, like Angelina can be the making of a successful franchise. This lead character was good. As was her male opponent.
However, a lot of crap inbetween brings the overall success down from poor directing choices to second rate acting.
It is worth watching and is a reasonable action movie. Just frustrating that is has unexplored potential.
St. Agatha (2018)
Agatha Christ ie
St. Agatha needs to meet the St. Trinian girls, but then the whole movie would be done with in 10 minutes, or less.
Feminists will not enjoy the down right moronic portrayal of women. It is clear that this movie is directed by a man, who is perhaps himself moronic.
There was some good acting, There were some moments of tension, helped with the music. Some cringe gore. However, the script and directing guides the potential of this movie truly south.
Definitely not a horror. Some psychological tension (more towards unconditioned fluffy sock than Hannibal).
If you have popcorn and intend to be distracted by the person next to you, then this is fine background.
