Afflicted (2013)
Loved it!
Now i'm a fan of vampires, they're not all great but any vampire flick and i'm there. Afflicted should be a pleasant surprise for fans and non-fans of the vamp!
Afflicted is about two best friends back-packing around the world in a one in a lifetime trip. The BFF's Clif Prowse and Derek Lee, (who also wrote and directed the film) have a genuine chemistry which helps the movie work so well.
Derek has a serious illness threatening his life so himself and Clif decide to take the plunge and do that bucket list trip. Clif the camera buff plans to document absolutely everything along the way, posting it live online as they go.
This found footage style filming soon gets into it after Derek meets a woman on there first stop of Paris to watch a group of friends play in a band. Clif and two band members decide to play a trick on Derek and his new bed buddy but when they get back to the hotel Derek is alone with a bloody mark at the top of his shoulder.
It's evident pretty quickly that Derek seems have to gained super human abilities and Clif decides to test his new powerful friend, all of which Derek exceeds beyond normal human ability.
The ending is slightly confusing but either way if you're looking for a difference with your vampire movies you have to check Afflicted out!
Absence (2013)
Slow but still worth a watch if you're bored
Absence is pretty much absent of any real excitement.
Absence begins with Evan, a young film student who is documenting his sister Liz and her husband, whose 7-month old baby fetus mysteriously vanished from his sisters body.
The trio escape the questioning from police and media attention and head off to a cabin in the woods. They, nor the doctors have any explanation for what happened to Liz.
The documentary shooting is real but sloppy for a films sake. No-one holds the camera twenty-four-seven and you do put it down when needing to do something (as is what happens in the film). It can be annoying for the viewer's pleasure to watch a wall while hearing a conversation in the background.
The central mystery of the disappearance takes a while to get into and the scares are far and few between but it does have the odd scene and shot that was worth the wait.
The ending was expected once it happened but I enjoyed it all the same.
If you're not a fan of found footage, you may not like this movie but if you are you'll want to give it a go.
The Theatre Bizarre (2011)
Apt Title For a Bizarre Movie!
What an apt title for this rather interesting (not always for the right reasons) anthology horror movie. There are no spoilers in this review, just short sentences on what I think of each short.
The Theatre Bizarre begins with a woman who takes a peek into a theatre she stumbles upon. Inside she is greeted by a man who introduces her to a show of short movies:
"Wet Dreams", was pretty good. One of my favourite's of the movie. And who doesn't like wet dreams?
"I love you" was a bloody addition with a decent plot twist.
"The Mother of Toads", was my least favourite. I mean toads? Frog off!
"The Accident" was effective in what it was trying to say, but I got bored of watching it's short screen time.
"Vision Stains" was the most original of the series and another worth watching.
And lastly "Sweets" is as about as bizarre as things could get.
There's a lot of awful, awful acting, but some of the stories are decent and worth giving a go.
The Theatre Bizarre is a random and gory anthology which will please a few. I'd say check it out because it is SO bizarre.
The Dyatlov Pass Incident (2013)
Worth the watch
Based on the true story of The Dyatlov Incident, Devils Pass is a pretty interesting watch.
The Dyatlov Pass Incident, a genuine Russian mystery from 1959, is about nine hikers who were found dead in the Ural Mountains.
A mixed group set-out to film and retrace the steps of the original hikers on the mountain Kholat Syakhi, also known as the Dyatlov's pass. The American Hikers J. P. and Audy are hired as expert climbers for the journey. While, the student film crew consists of Holly, Denise and Jensen.
Prior to the hike, the team find out that more bodies were found dead than the reported nine, which only helps to add to the conspiracy that the Russian Government might have been involved in sweeping facts under the rug.
With believable acting and an interesting story, while being based around true events, Devil's Pass is definitely worth a watch for horror fans and conspiracy theorists.
Vlog (2008)
Gore Galore
If you like gore, then Vlog is for you.
Starring Brookes Marks who plays her Vlogger-self Brookes Marks, Vlog tells the story of our usually underwear-clad Vlogger who decides to post the day to day aspects of her life. These mainly include her ever increasing-in-numbers sex, I mean, love life.
Brooke receives a strange recording directing her to a website that show a series of clips of her then boyfriends and friends being murdered.
The clips are bloody, gruesome and creative. I loved them.
There are discrepancies with the police work and club scene recordings but I can let those slide for the gore work.
Brookes is annoying but I still liked her. I wanted to see who she got killed next. And then the ending came, which is pretty cool, but the films selling point is definitely the blood and gore and if not for these the whole movie would've been a bit blah.
Worth a watch if you're into bloody scenes.
