Molly's Game (2017)
Hollywood trash
More fake news from the land of the "free " . I gave it 4 for a jolly little romp that's visually engaging . Any approximation to a "true story " is instantly ridiculous . Once that bubble is burst any and all pompous nonsense about depth , feminist reality and political insight vanishes into the mist of pure monetisation of what may have been an interesting story - had there been a shred of reality or truth in it . Total fantasy & , like all modern Hollywood tripe , lacking in anything that either educates or illuminates . Dismal ending - untrue and glib - where there might have been some expression of actuality .
The Professor and the Madman (2019)
Fascinating story - very well told
All the aspects that make a tale engrossing are at play in this movie .
From the start I was involved with all the characters and the plot and , as it unfolded , so both drama and lead roles became richer and even more believable and moving .
Adoration (2013)
Eden despoiled
Captivating emotionality and scenery give a solid background to a disturbing story .
The idyllic setting ,( who wouldn't want to live there ?), gives the lie to the notion that where you live is how you live - the gorgeous location doesn't provide enough heaven to prevent the flawed humanity tainting the view .
Younger viewers might not recognise some of the themes as being realistic but - having lived through and witnessed them - I can reassure you that grooming youngsters for pleasure , getting caught in the trap and suffering/enjoying the consequences is quite common . If you're unaware of this you've either not lived long enough or not been observant enough.
The joys and pains of inter-generational passion are beautifully observed and several outcomes are visited . Each protagonist presents a different set of feelings , thoughts and understandings of the affairs as the story unfolds .
Very believable & moving human tale of the desperate search for love and acceptance in a world of conformity and judgement.
This stands as both an education and a warning about how love& lust can present in life .
Dad's Army (2016)
Dismal reconstruction
Pathetic , angry , feminist , humourless drivel.
What was funny, insightful and recognisable has been turned into some ridiculous post-feminist fantasy.
The characters are wan , vacuous and unbelievable and bear no resemblance whatever to the original bright, human , warm and accessible originals.
History rewritten by some kind of frustrated haridan.
We're the Millers (2013)
Carry On Mary Jane
3 laughs , 4 smiles and Jennifer in underwear often.
One for the juniors.
King Arthur: Excalibur Rising (2017)
Don't be tempted
It's really hard to find anything at all to say apart from - don't bother .
Cloud Atlas (2012)
Engage brain , open mind - enjoy.
It took about 30 minutes for me to grasp the concept and tune into the time /space shifts but after that I was totally hooked . Magnificent film that repays all of your attention - and , yes , you need all of your attention to appreciate the underlying continuity.
Wonderful character acting throughout with a script that draws you into every person's story in an evocative , engaging way .
As I loved the multi-layered meanings and possibilities in The Matrix the same applies here and I'm sure that I'll watch this for at least one more time to pick over the bones and enjoy yet more depth and nuance .
So impressed I've just ordered David Mitchell's book - if it stands up that will be one great author to add to the list.
Captain Fantastic (2016)
Dopamine for sheeples
Very good and affective Hollywood sentimentality. Lovely scenery, fine acting, and dramatic use of musical hooks.
So far, so good . The froth is very well done. The substance, however , is unbelievable drivel . As usual with this type of 'feelgood' pap the underlying message is concrete, establishment, American dream. Whatever else happens the dream wins - there is only one way to live and be content and that is to grovel before the adman's spiel and totally resign to their whims.
The entire plot is based upon the emotional freak out of a family within the 1% financially and culturally and has no connection whatever with the vast bulk of humanity . None of what happens could or would occur in any normal family - largely because they wouldn't have the hard cash to indulge in such flippant nonsense, but primarily because all of the consequences of this family's actions in this film would hang far more heavily and permanently upon a middle/working class group.
The froth continues in a lame and frankly offensive view of mental illness and a frivolous take on cultural differences . For anyone with a fully functional frontal cortex the morality play is so simplistic as to be risible - right and wrong are literally thrown down the toilet.
This might have been a truly moving and authentic piece had it been set in normality rather than in extreme privilege .
Ink (2009)
Ho-hum
Tedious from the start , descending into pretentious art school project drivel . Might have made a half decent 30 minute TV show.
Really - don't bother .
The Player (1992)
A Parody of a parody
" Show biz kids making movies of themselves , you know they don't give a **** about anybody else .".
Dated, predictable , obvious and very, very tedious .
If you're a fan of Hollywood junk and have no idea of what a desperate, corrupt and self-obsessed industry produces your escapist pap ; if you want to see endless montages of sets laden with movie stars ; if you've given up thinking - then this is for you.
LFO (2013)
An Antidote to Hollywood pap
Delightfully disturbing examination of human fragility that questions sanity, compassion and self-absorption . The 'sci-fi' vehicle gives a wonderful scope for all the main characters to express their individual pecadillos whilst opening up more global issues . Plenty of humour and pathos and a total lack of schmaltzy sentimentality raise this above the regular propaganda and into a truly thought provoking piece.
Excellent acting , mood and score just add to a novel and well expressed plot.
A joy to watch.
Con Men (2015)
Waste of time
Remember how the BBC series Hustle showed a tasty scam in less than an hour ?
This would have taken much less time .
Dreadful film lacking in just about everything you'd want from a movie.
The Fall (2006)
Childish tripe
Formulaic, glitzy nonsense suitable for the under 12 market.
