Gripping four episode thriller based on a Japanese novel, but set in Scotland. Moody and dark, the main reason for watching this is Kevin McKidd who gives a stellar performance as a troubled police detective whose daughter has gone missing. While the plots has enough twists to avoid being in the paint by numbers school of thriller writing, watch it for McKidd as he gets inside the head of his character, a lowly ranked detective. McKidd's performance masterfully avoids the limitations of his character I.e., the cliche of the passed over disgruntled detective, whose brother has made it to the top of the Force. Intense yet under played, McKiidd turns in a slow burn performance that simply steals the show.

Hysteria rules!

A dreadfully overacted silly episode showing great ignorance of police procedures. And with a touch of woke too. No police officer would be allowed to investigate the kidnapping of their own child. Ignoring such a fundamental conflict of interest renders this episode a bit of a joke. Series could not get much worse.

Interesting but with a few facts missing

A series that holds your interest but skips some information that would have made it easier to understand why the accused was guilty. A Guardian article at the time of his trial clears up most of the anomalies though.
Police procedural that ignores police procedure!

As a police officer, Adam would not have been allowed anywhere near the investigation of the kidnapping of his father, including him confessing to accessing the system to identify the informant. Nor would his supervisor allowed him to be present when his colleagues viewed the video of the shooting. Ignoring so many conflicts of interest would have brought IA down on the entire unit like a ton of bricks! Good fun to watch though if you just see it as fantasy.

Lots of bad reviews for this trilogy but it is nevertheless entertaining In a gothic sort of way, and beautifully made. The problem with the trilogy as a police procedural is that no western police force would allow a police officer with such a fundamental conflict of interest anywhere near the cases that underly the trilogy. She is investigating her own family! The judge is a creepy sexual harasser too. Watch and enjoy but don't take it seriously.
