Paris, Texas (1984)
Actual city of Paris,Texas inaccurately portrayed
Classic example of how a director can misportray and incorrectly convey an area. I have lived in Paris, Texas most of my life and can tell you that is a lush piney woods area city of 30,000 and highly urbanized (WalMart, McDonald's, Applebee's, Wendy's, etc.). Tourists from Europe and even Minnesota come in my bookstore shocked at what they've seen because prior to visiting Paris, Texas they thought it was a dessert area because of how it was misrepresented in the movie. Suggest anyone who hasn't visited Paris, Texas skip this atrocious movie and search driving around Paris, Texas videos on YouTube and Rumble.
Local Boys (2002)
SUMMER SURF TEEN DRAMA
Great coming of age on the beach surfing movie, the usual ups and downs of male teens and growing up. Troubled little brother has a mentor who is a famous surfer. Excellent movie.
Vampires (1998)
Modern day Vampire Western as only Carpenter Can Do It
Gripping from start to finish, set in the American Southwest, and loaded with plenty of action and gore. Outstanding performance by James Woods as the leader of the vampire hunters. One of the Top Ten vampire movies (in my opinion).
Profondo rosso (1975)
DOESN'T LIVE UP TO THE HYPE
I found it far too slow and plodding. The gore scenes are okay and at least one of the murders seems to be a nod to Mario Bava's BLOOD AND BLACK LACE (a MUCH, MUCH better film). I was quite disappointed. The music by the Goblins was good. I saw the long unedited version so there was way too much dialogue and way too slow a pace for my tastes.
Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966)
YOU AREN'T SUPPOSED TO "LIKE" THIS MOVIE...LOL
It's definitely not a move that you "like", so to speak, it's a movie that you react to. Taylor is superb as the drunken nagging harpy and Burton is great as the failed ineffectual professor. Watching it is not a pleasant experience but I can respect it as a work of art and appreciate the performance, the director's work, and the script. No, I did not enjoy it but I recognize the artistry of its horribleness and I think we aren't meant to like any of the characters.
Rampart (2011)
WOODY HARRELSON DELIVERS
Accurate portrayal by Harrelson of a narcissistic corrupt cop in present-day Los Angeles. Accurately touches upon the media coverage of police violence against citizens which has been a real-life problem for a lot more decades than just the ones between Rodney King and George Floyd. Set it 1999 L. A. (just 7 years after the riot and 4 years after the OJ Simpson trial) it might as well be taking place today. Ambiguous ending leaves the viewer to decide what our fallen cop might do.
Dracula Rising (1993)
APRECIATE THIS ONE FOR ITS ARTISTRY
This one works outside the box. Time travel, reincarnation, eternal love and a blonde Dracula. Highly erotic and clever 50s doo wop love songs, Eastern European medieval settings, fabulous scenery. One of Roger Corman's best! Appreciate this one for pushing the envelope in creative ways.
The Roommate (2011)
THE ROOMMATE packs suspense and chills
Above average thriller is the usual jealous/demented roommate formula but has its share of minor surprises. I've seen better but I've also seen much, much worse. Approach this from the point of view of suspenseful escapism and you will enjoy it.
Nobel Son (2007)
EDGE OF YOUR SEAT WITH NOBEL SON
Absolutely over the top in every way, one of the best movies I've seen in a long time. Twists and turns, plenty of surprises, superb acting. Fiendishly clever, highly recommended!
Werewolves of the Third Reich (2017)
THIS IS RIGHT UP THERE WITH TARANTINO'S INGLORIUS BASTERDS
If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, this one lives up to that statement. Very well done, riveting from start to finish, one of the better Americans vs Nazis films I've seen in quite some time.
The Fanatic (2019)
MORE THAN GORE: GREAT PERFORMANCES TOO
Travolta actually turns in a good performance as a mentally challenged guy and Devon Sawa does an excellent job portraying a narcissistic and sadistic movie star. The subject matter may be dark and grisly, but the performances are superb.
No Down Payment (1957)
Fabulous Period Piece
Five stars! Captures the economic prosperity of the Fifties and the growth of suburbia as upwardly mobile couples flee the city for suburban "nice neighborhoods". Captures the attitudes, prejudices, fashion and music of the time, and as such is one of the best "period pieces" I've ever seen.
Bird Box (2018)
NEW SPIN ON APOCALYPTIC SCENARIO
Nonstop tension and a new spin on an apocalyptic world. In the review I am going to write I am going to say "If you took The Birds, Dawn of the Dead and The Happening and tossed them into a blender, Birdbox is what you get". Frankly, I was quite impressed with it. I like end of the world societal breakdown scenarios and this was a refreshingly unique and different approach to that.
