Computer Chess (2013)
Bujalski and his team invented their own aesthetics
Andrew Bujalski and his team did an unbelievable job in recreating all the details of this world of a group of computer nerds in the 80's, especially the eyeglasses, haircuts, clothing, classic computers.
The cinematography is brilliant not only because of the bold choice of using a vintage black and white video camera. Bujalski and his long time cinematographer Matthias Grunsky created odd but very strong compositions. The camera moves through the hotel halls in a very strange and eerie way. One could say the filmmakers have invented their own new aesthetics for this movie.
It is definitely something I have never seen before.
The Syndrome (2014)
great investigative filmmaking
THE SYNDROME took me on a terrifying and very informative journey into the world of scientists doctors journalists and lawyers who are all uncovering that the so called "Shaken Baby Syndrome" is not scientifically valid. But the theory helped to prosecute many innocent people currently in prison. While of course it is not recommended to shake a baby, many innocent people are prosecuted with the help of what seems to be a lobby of shaken baby proponents. They are trying to silence their critics.
The filmmakers did an amazing job in their research. This is a great example of investigative filmmaking.
Hopefully this documentary can change the way these cases are seen and make our world a better place.
