The Dead Don't Die (2019)
How is this even possible?
When the zombis are giving the best acting performance of the movie, you know there is something very wrong.
The cast is amazing, there's several actors that I love, was this flick some kind of performance where they were forced to do their worst? I mean it's really, really bad.
I truly don't understand ; what happened here?!?
Dune Drifter (2020)
don't waste your time
This was so slow and boring !
The only explaination I could come up with to why this movie exists, is that it acts like a trap for people who don't pay attention and think they are going to see Dune.
The Eric Andre Show (2012)
There is nothing like it
So many shows are labeled as comedy, yet don't even get a smile out of their audience. Well The Eric Andre Show delivers ! Some sequences had me in tears.
Fans of absurd humor rejoice, this is a true gem.
Note : This is clearly not for everyone. The show is as insane as it is hyper.
The New Mutants (2020)
don't waste your time
This is a crappy teenage movie. And by I don't mean to be insulting towards movies aimed for teens, it's just that on top of being bad, it's really not made for adults.
The Predator (2018)
Mix poorly written scenario with bad acting, and voila ! Predator 2018
Seriously, was this written by a 12yo ? (one that would have gotten too many concusion/head traumas playing football without a helmet that is)
I watched the movie knowing it would be bad, so I had really low expectations. I guess you could say the movie is so bad it's almost good ; I got a couple chuckles here and there, but it was mostly out of amazement for the sheer level of stupidity.
The characters are a complete caricature, the worst of them all is the main cast (Quinn McKenna), which is supposed to be badass, but really comes out just as an angry imbecile.
Greenland (2020)
One poor decision after another
You know the scenes where you go "oh come on, why in hell would anyone do that ?!". Well, this movie is packed with characters having poor judgment and taking the most idiotic decisions possible (and being hysterical), and it's all done for the sole purpose of generating obstacles and create tension.
And it works ! It does create a lot tension, but it's all aimed towards the scenarists, for blatantly taking you for an imbecile.
You'll very quickly find yourself wishing for the death of some of the main characters, which would make things so much better, but then the movie would last only 15/20 minutes.
Grimm (2011)
A police tv show with cheap SFX
When I started watching Grimm, I was hoping for something a bit dark/twisted, with cool monsters. It is not. Not at all.
Grimm is a very basic police tv show, and has about as much to do with the fairy tales than the "I am Legends" movie has to do with the book (ie : not much)
And I was also shocked how bad/poor the sfx are. If you don't have the budget for good CGI, go with animatronics, it will look 1000 times better.
Grimm is like a one trick pony : all the antagonists look the same : some cheap cgi is applied to their faces to make them vaguely ressemble an animal and that's it.
Very disapointed, and once again also disapointed at the imdb rating, which does not reflect reality. This should by no means have an 8 out of 10 rating.
Gretel & Hansel (2020)
Not mainstream - Not for everyone
Gretel and Hansel is a slow paced huis-clos revisiting the fairy tale with the aesthetics of something like Devs/Ex-machina. The cinematography is gorgeous, and creates a beautifully tense/unhealthy atmosphere at times.
It's much darker than the sanitized mainstream versions that have been produced so far, bringing it back closer to the original Grimm tales.
If you enjoyed movies like The Expendables, the last season of Game of Thrones, or have the attention span of a 8yo with ADHD, do not waste your time.
This is more aimed towards people who enjoyed Enemy, The Place Beyond the Pines, or Only God Forgives.
Silence (2016)
a caricature
I was looking forward to this movie, Martin Scorsese is a fantastic director, Silence had the potential to be something epic, but it's just a sad caricature.
"Ooh ooh look how evil shinto/buddhists are !!! Christians are all martyrs !!!!" Yeah right ... it is very tiresome to get this message rammed down your throat for almost 3 hours without any form of nuance or subtlety.
And then all the non Christian Japanese talk like Yakuzas and behave like idiots (I mean ... the inquisitor litteraly makes monkey sounds and pronounces "s" like if he was a snake ? why ?? what the hell is going on here ?! over exaggerating in such a ridiculous manner makes him loose all credibility).
Although the Japanese authorities are depicted in a completely ridiculous maner, what they did made sense : they tried to stop a poison from spreading. European Inquisition or the horrendous acts commited by spanish missions in south america anyone ?
This is a very long and slow reminder of how many people wasted their lives (and others) for absolutely nothing.
The Mandalorian (2019)
What is going on ?!
How can this show have such a high rating ?!
The days when imdb's rating would give you a good idea of what a movie is worth seem to be long gone. There is no way this comes even close to masterpieces like The Wire or Breaking Bad.
It seems that nowdays, people either vote 10 or 1. So be it !
My true rating for this show would be 5/10
Set and settings is nice, but acting is terrible, and the script ... non existant ?
The whole season could be summed up in one 50 mins episode if it had the pace of a show like Game of Thrones
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
McDonald's version of Sushi
If I had to do an analogy, I'd say this movie is to the original whatwould happen if Mc Donalds tried to make sushi.
Story wise, the movie is both a dumbed down version and has major plot changes (it's about the same magnitude of difference as between the book "I am legend" and the ending of the movie that shares the same name. If you know what I mean, and are a fan of GITS, I just crushed your hopes hard).
Also visually, when I thought about GITS (1995 version, which I loved), I picture something aesthetically pleasing and beautiful. For the live action movie, aside from the restaurant scene, which looked great, I didn't like the visuals much, felt kinda cheap (esp. the city). You can tell the director tried a bit, but all in all, it's lacking a soul. On a side note : The guy playing Batou was a good cast for the role , he got the job done.
PS : And what was this BS with Kitano's dialogues ?!? Either have his dialogues in full Japanese, or in full English, but what they did here screams "Takeshi did not want to speak English, and the cast didn't want to learn 3 words of Japanese", it just felt plain awkward.
The Void (2016)
The less you know, the better. Just go watch it.
I saw this movie at the Festival du film Fantastique (Gerardmer, France). We were watching 6 movies per day for 3 days in a row, "The Void" was the last movie we were going to see for the day and I had absolutely no idea what it was about. In fact I thought it was a sci-fi movie when we stepped into the theater, and boy am I glad we did not know more ; we were in for quite a ride.
If you plan on watching the movie, I strongly advise you to stop reading/watching any type of review, teaser, trailer or any form of info about it. Not that I am going to spoil anything here, but I believe this movie is enjoyed much better if you know absolutely nothing about it. If you've seen the poster you already know too much. OK you might be wondering "What if I don't like the genre ? I want to know what this is about !". It's true that this movie is not for everyone, and I can understand that some people will strongly dislike it. Well, just know that if you appreciate the kind of movies John Carpenter was delivering in the 80's, this is for you. Now go !
Personnaly, I absolutely loved The Void, it has been a very long time since I felt so much tension while watching a film. The buildup is very well done. This is no "jump in your seat" crap. It is the kind of movie that makes you hold your breath and make your blood pressure go up, the kind that makes you feel like you are in a nightmare. The Void will get the same kind of cult status as movies like Event Horizon or In the Mouth of Madness did.
