Afflicted (2018)
Filmmakers Misrepresented Their Objectives When Casting These Patients
These disabled patients were interviewed for 2 hours or more as were their families, but it turns out it was an audition as to who would be the most vulnerable to fit the filmmakers' reality show agenda. Jose Montoya, the director of the Stanford ME/CFS Initiative and Jamison Hill's personal infectious disease doctor, was unable to get to Nevada for an interview, but why couldn't they go to Palo Alto or do a Skype? Ronald Davis, ME/CFS researcher at Stanford was interviewed but his footage was not included, nor were the ME/CFS Symposium doctors' interviews included. The opportunity to showcase all these chronically ill patients' lives and illnesses through a "compassionate lens" (as was the pitch) was pushed aside for the insult of the modern day sideshow of freaks. To laugh at and scorn them was the objective, to turn difficult diseases, illnesses, and syndromes into mental health issues. If you think that nutritionists, homeopaths, and chiropractors are charlatans, you probably have not dealt with psychiatry's abuses on the invisibly ill and how it has overstepped its boundaries into turning physiological diseases into diseases of the mind. Rheumatoid arthritis was once believed to be caused by emotional issues and MS was "hysterical paralysis" up until the day the CAT scan was invented. Peptic ulcers, now known to be caused by the bacteria H. Pylori, was thought to be brought on by stress. POTS, where one faints due to sudden rises and drops in BP, was thought to be "hysterical fainting". GWI was labeled a mental health issue; the cause of HIV was moral. "Refrigerator moms" were the cause of Autism and Asperger's as they were cold towards their children and didn't show them enough love. Uncontrollable hiccups were due to some past emotions until they found it was a problem with the vagus nerve and using stimulation could manage the problem. YOU, the viewer and citizen, are under the control of the psychiatrists. And the government healthcare systems are happy to oblige in this coverup to save research money; insurance companies get out of disability payments due to a mental health clause. And the patients go on suffering year in and year out; a decade in and decade out.
Unrest (2017)
One Of The Severely Ill Films Herself At Her Worst To Document The Disease Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Jen Brea is one of the severely ill due to ME/CFS. She films herself, directs, interviews doctors and patients via Skype, and edits mostly from her bed in order to document the severity of her disease (and millions worldwide) and how she and her husband, her caretaker, now have to forge a different life than the one they had imagined for themselves.
Patients experience neurological issues with sound and light sensitivity and coordination, pain, POTS, cognition issues, and debilitating fatigue. Exertion whether physical or mental will bring on crashes where symptoms worsen. Doctors and researchers discuss the disease.
