Venom (2005)
A great Surprise
When I read about this movie, I was expecting another low-budget, straight-to-DVD shaky-camera movie with corny music, lame actors, and a very predictable, repetitive plot. Of course, everyone knows, there's about a 1 in 100 chance that straight-to-DVD horror movies will be DECENT. But that 1 in 100 is a pleasant surprise. And this movie is a perfect example.
The movie basically centers around these two teenagers who witness the 'drowning' of the local rednecked trucker. He gets in an accident with the grandmother of one of their friends, who is a voodoo priestess. He opens her 'suitcase' and gets a nasty surprise, before her car falls off the bridge they crashed on into the water. Soon his body disappears, and so-on so-on.
The plot is very solid, with only minor "What the hell?"s every so often. The acting is really decent, and there are many great deaths scenes (meaning good special effects). There is actually a variation in the 'scary' music that they play, and the camera is solid, the lighting is generally great, and the actors SPEAK UP.
It is a really great movie. I started to watch it expecting NOTHING, but I was pleasantly surprised. Don't expect a million-dollar budget out of it, but its a darn good movie!
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003)
A Perfect Remake, With a Great Cast
I personally loved this movie. It was extremely well made. Jessica Biel is very good as Erin, and the other actors are good too. I never saw the original, but this is one of my favourite movies of all time.
I know some people don't really like this remake, but I don't know why. The directing is good, the lighting, acting, producing, writing, and everything else is good. It can be scary at times, and really builds up the suspense. It is somewhat predictable, but overall, It's a really great horror movie. I highly recommend it.
10 out of 10
A GREAT MOVIE!
Wolf Creek (2005)
Wow. Not exactly what I was expecting.
This movie was not at all what I had expected. I am a horror fan, and I love a great gory horror movie. But this movie was just... different from what the trailers had insinuated that it was.
First of all, this is not a brilliant blockbuster. The camera can be shaky at times, the plot is pretty simple, and the acting is somewhat good, but a little shaky too. It took a good hour to warm up, and didn't stay warm for very long. It's not even that scary, if that's what you go to a movie for.
The plot is very straightforward, and there are no real twists. It's a decent story, and, at times, you can even feel sorry for what the characters go through. But I would have to disagree with Quentin Tarantino that this movie will go down in horror history.
In conclusion: It takes an hour or so to get to any action, the plot is simple, the acting is okay, the camera is shaky, and it's not the horror movie that it's cracked up to be. It's nice to see a movie not made by the US, but still, I don't recommend it.
The Island (2005)
A great Action flick, displaying a convincing plot, and Depth
This is one of the best movies I have seen! It was really well made, the acting was excellent, the plot was convincing and realistic, and there were some very memorable action scenes contained within too.
First of all, you start out seeing the daily lives of the supposed survivors of a virus of some sort that wiped out man kind. The survivors are all living in this facility, and cannot go outside for fear of contamination. There is a daily lottery, and the winners get to go to "The Island," which is supposed to be a really nice place. Ewan McGregor, one day, finds a moth flying around in the mechanical part of the building, where he was visiting his friend that lives there, and then eventually discovers that there is no "contamination" outside, and that the people that win the lottery to go to the Island are really just being killed.
He and Scarlette Johansson escape from the facility (after some pretty intense scenes, and close calls to dying), and find out that they are just clones that act as extensions to their "owner's" lives. Rich people that are sick spend a lot of money to have these clones made, and when they need them, the clones can give them blood or organs, or whatever they need.
It was a really neat movie, to see how it all unravels. Scarlette and Ewan are a great duo, and the special effects in this movie are amazing!
A great all around movie!
Dark Water (2005)
Deep, But Lacking Originality
Sadly, this is just another Japanese chiller flick about a dead little girl who was killed (or abandoned) by her mother, and trying to kill another little child to earn a new mother. Quite like The Ring, it had some depth, but majorly lacks originality, especially since it came out after The Ring.
I had been waiting to see this movie for several months, when I saw it first advertised, and I got half of what I was looking for in the movie. It did put me on edge for a while, and Jennifer Connily did play a great part. But, again, it does lack originality, and didn't have the most frightening storyline.
What is it that the author, Koji Suzuki, has with little girls pretty much being drowned in a well type area by their mothers, and then attacking little boys or girls to steal their mother? I just don't understand it.
Oh well.... What can you do...?
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 (2003)
Since When Do People Have That Much Blood?
I first heard about this movie over the radio. I really thought it was like a depressing drama where someone's kid dies, and blah blah blah... But then I saw the clip where Lucy Lui swipes off Boss Tanaka's head, and I thought I'd watch it, because Lucy Lui is one of my favourite actresses. I saw it in a hotel room, and I immediately liked it. My mom thought it was too gory and violent, and therefore wouldn't let me buy it. But it was my birthday, and I got one of my friends to buy it for me. Reluctantly, my mom let me keep it. I'm so glad she did. In my opinion, it was one of the best action-comedy movies ever made. I don't know if it was originally meant to be a comedy, but I found it really funny. The fight scenes were, as could be expected, very unrealistic, but nonetheless great fight scenes. The only problem I had with it was the extremely unrealistic amount of blood that squirted everywhere when someone died. It was a little over-exaggerated. Oh well, it was still a great movie for fans of gory, funny, action-packed, cult movies.
Ginger Snaps: Unleashed (2004)
The best werewolf movie ever made, by far!
This movie was absolutely the best werewolf movie ever made! It was so good, that, if I didn't have a short attention span, I would watch it back-to-back every day!
First of all, the acting, once again, was superb. Emily Perkins does a wonderful job as Brigitte, and the new character, Ghost, was perfect, although her lines seemed a little too rehearsed.
I really like the dark humor in it, once again. I like movies that can be dramatic, somewhat scary, and funny all at once (all movies should be!). I don't know how people can say that they don't like this movie. I do!
The ending, where Ghost traps the transforming Brigitte in her cellar, and then welcomes her grandma home, is perfectly dark. I kinda think it's mean that she wants to hurt her grandma, but it goes with the plot. I especially like the very end, when she's reading the comic, and she says something like, "And off she went on her reign of terror, to vanquish her mortal enemies, of which there were many."
I don't know why I like it so much, it's just perfect.
Ginger Snaps (2000)
A good werewolf movie, But I liked the sequel more
I was about 10 or so when I first heard about this movie. My parents saw it, and said I was too young to see it yet. Sure enough, three years later, I ended up seeing the third one, and eventually got around to seeing this one, and the sequel. It was a little slower than the other two in my opinion, but was nonetheless a great movie.
The beginning was very effective, seeing the mutilated dog in the doghouse. It really set the mood, and upon seeing the dog, I knew that it would be a somewhat gory movie. The beginning credits when we see all the pictures of the two sisters (Ginger and Brigitte) dead in different scenes was pretty weird, but I kind of liked it. It was darkly funny.
Another good point was the acting. I thought that the two actresses that played Ginger and Brigitte were really great actors. They played the parts, in my opinion, perfectly. Brigitte was especially dark, and was played really well.
It was kinda gross seeing Ginger transform (growing a tail, hair, what not?), but I thought it was a lot more realistic than other werewolf movies. It was really modern version of the classic werewolf myth (or not-so myth).
Overall, this is one of the five best werewolf movies ever made, in my opinion.
