Knox Goes Away (2023)
Keaton in an unexpected role
Keaton was definitely the main draw here, as was the general plot, of a contract killer and general character demeanor giving me a clue of what I was in for.
I didn't know about the dementia angle to the movie and how it is the foundation for how the majority of the movie plays out.
Keaton's acting is superb, James Marsden as his son also does a commendable job. Movie overall was very enjoyable and if you're a fan of Keaton, you won't likely be disappointed here. His ever increasing dementia towards the end is tough to watch and I can't even begin to imagine knowing someone or having a parent going through that while their kids have to accept what's happening in front of their very eyes.
Highly recommend it.
Shôgun: Tomorrow Is Tomorrow (2024)
TV at it's absolute finest!
I knew I'd love this series from the very first teaser trailer months ago but this third episode was for me really something special.
The acting is too notch and as the viewer you really feel the chemistry between the material they're working with and the actors themselves shining through.
The production is really a feast for the senses. A lot of painstaking time and effort has been put in to ensure the authenticity of the period, the props are just spectacular.
I love Hiroyuki Senada and the last scene of this episode had to be my favorite. You can see he is genuinely interested in a friendship with John Blackthorn, we are seeing a playfulness in his character that we've yet to see and probably something he hasn't feel in a long time as a grown man with his title/status.
This show might top Vikings for me which would be astonishing for me as that's one of my favorites of all time. Can't wait for next week!
Fargo: Trials and Tribulations (2023)
Supremely acted and intoxicating
Wow, I can't say I expected anything less but damn, Juno Temple is outstanding and Jon Hamm is his usual spectacular self.
Jon Hamm's Roy Tillman is my kind of Sheriff. Mr. And Mrs. Ja Queen, FBI agents, really have no idea who they are dealing with in Roy but it looks like they will soon be finding out.
I loved Dot's dialogue with Wayne's mom (Jennifer Jason Leigh). Looks like Dot and Roy's marriage makes perfect sense. No wife is Roy's is going to be mild mannered helpless Dot that Wayne thinks she is.
I'm curious now if Roy really knows who Dot really is and was before their marriage. It's clear he is very old fashioned in his beliefs based on what took place with his daughter and son-in-law at the diner.
I am really looking forward to the rest of this season playing out, already i can tell this is going to be excellent and well worth the long layoff from the air.
Trying: I'm Scared (2021)
Tearjerker of a finale, setting up for season 3
Maybe it's me getting older but I'm finding myself enjoying these feel good type of series more now than ever before and Trying is high on that list.
Being a new dad myself and having to go through some hurdles to get there, watching a couple go through an even more arduous process of being foster parents is at times tough to watch.
The acting is great especially my the main cast and I love the usual dry British humor. I won't give the episode away but it was great to see some story lines come to a close and a new chapter dry in motion to play out in season 3.
Mr Inbetween: Ray Who? (2021)
Ray, the perfect parent?
How do you not love this guy? If you love this series as much as I would imagine all the regular viewers do, it seems as if Ray can do no wrong and watching his parenting tactics at work, while most of it won't fly IRL, you still can't help rooting for the guy.
The laid back nature of the show is what I would have thought of as the quintessential makeup of an Aussie dramedy and it's a real gem in the ocean choices available these days so for me I enjoy it immensely.
Retfærdighedens ryttere (2020)
A must if you love Mads
Where to start with this one. It's definitely wacky in some unexpected ways and it's dark from your run of the mill action revenge movie.
Review score may be a bit skewed, being a huge Mads fan but his acting doesn't disappoint and at the end you may also believe this could be a 10 rated movie.
The rest of the cast, unknown to me but surprisingly they all play their roles very well and are all likeable and you grow to get attached to them.
If you're on the fence, I would strongly recommend giving it a chance. It's an oddball movie in some ways but very enjoyable.
Embattled (2020)
Wasn't expecting to like it so much
Really well done movie from the acting to the writing. I'm generally a Stephen Dorff fan and more times than not his depicted as a bad guy in his roles which he is able to pull off well, most memorable of those for me being in the first Blade.
His son's character though, can't recall seeing him in anything else, turned out to be a very good actor and one I'd not mind seeing in future movies.
I was expecting the MMA aspects to be cheesy, the fight promos and fight commentaries but for the most part you're so invested in the characters by them that you don't really care and they aren't as bad as I had in my mind so overly I highly recommend it, if you don't mind getting a bit worked up emotionally.
Mr Inbetween (2018)
Try to find a better show, I dare you!
I just love this show. It doesn't hurt that I love the Aussie accent and Ray's character is just brilliant. The best compliment I can give is that everything feels so natural with the acting, not fake or trying too hard to be funny or scary or taking themselves too seriously, just feels very authentic.
I've recommended this show to everyone I know and probably talked their ear to death trying to get them to watch it. If you haven't seen it yet, I can't recommend it enough, just wish the seasons weren't 6 episodes. It's bad enough that each episode is only 30 minutes long.
BH90210 (2019)
Weird at first but stick with it if you're a true fan
I read about the concept for this back when it was announced but was still a little weird that they were playing themselves in a make-believe setting. While I will never forget the theme song, I hadn't heard it play out loud in years and definitely brought back so many good memories. I don't have any real expectations for the rest of this season, I am just happy they are back even if I would have loved a real reboot of the original series. Really wish Luke Perry was around to star in the show too, his absence is definitely felt.
Don't Look Now (1973)
Eerie psychological thriller that belongs on everyone's watchlist.
Being a huge fan of horror movies, this movie hasn't shown up on my radar till recently and that was not intentional. Having said that, I am very glad it did and I gave it a chance.
While this movie has moments that border on horror, it's definitely more of a supernatural thriller. I didn't do any research on this movie before seeing it tonight and wanted to go in not knowing at all what to expect. The movie is primarily shot in Venice with many of the secondary cat being Italian. If you've never seen (or have but needed a reminder) of what a young and thin Donald Sutherland looks like, be prepared to find out.
I won't get into the details for fear of giving too much away but I will say that I wasn't expecting to be sucked into this movie the way I did. The location combined with the music and imagery definitely transport you into the directors world that he's painting for us.
While The Shining holds a special for me in that genre, this I would say deserves to be included in that same conversation and shouldn't be overlooked.
Making a Murderer (2015)
Hard to believe this is a documentary not fiction
Halfway into this, every episode has me saying wow at least a handful of times. The fact that this is not fiction, it is Steven Avery's reality and all of close ones is nothing short of incredible.
The obvious nature of this is not for the weak of mind or weak of emotion. More times than I can recall I became so frustrated with what I was watching, the sheer denial by the police of what was obviously taking place is mind-blowing.
Trying to review this as what it is, a real life documentary shot over the course of many years is tough. It is very well shot and incredibly gripping and many times edge of your seat fascinating, easily putting the best drama shows to shame. It is so easy to get caught up in the series to the point that you forget this is not a make believe drama and that it's very much real.
For fans of true crime who can stomach going through 10 episodes of this type of torture, nail biting real life drama, I highly recommend watching this and I applaud the creators for putting this out there to expose what goes on in law enforcement in this country and the real crimes that THEY get away with on a regular basis.
