Epidemiya (2019)
From annoying to compelling!
Characters very unlikable at first. And to be honest many of them do a good job of remaining unlikable, but on the whole they have enough depth, charm and humanity to keep you engaged.
There are none of the usual, predictable hollywood character arcs - where the villain becomes the goodie, or the weak stands up to be the hero - they are all flawed, but have just enough skills, luck and desperation to carry on. That said, they do still grow, and it's great.
There's nothing terribly unique here, although I can't remember the last doomsday/pandemic type scenario I saw in sub-zero conditions. A frozen, dark hell is always just around the corner, but my memory of the show is somehow bright and fresh.
Once it gets going things fly along at a solid pace. Some moments I think deserved more attention, but they pack so much in I can forgive that.
And all the minor characters are just as good, if not sometimes better, than the leads. You know a great character when you morn for them, and they only lasted one episode.
Been watching horror/survival fare for over 30 years. This was defo worth my time. Solid 8/10
Loved it and cannot wait for season 2.
MAKE IT. I NEED TO KNOW!
Star Trek: The Next Generation: Devil's Due (1991)
Worth a rewatch
Yeah, not quite a 7.
6.8 if I could be precise.
Still worth a re-watch if you're cherry picking the entire series or educating the kids.
A modern version of this would have been super dark. This is suitably fun, does hark back to TOS a little and probably would have been better placed in Season 2.
Raised by Wolves: The Beginning (2020)
Snakes on a Lander!
Enough is enough!
I have had it with these monkey-fighting snakes on this Monday to Friday lander!
Ricky Gervais: Humanity (2018)
Smart, honest, funny
I'm not gonna get political, it's all been said - it's just very smart, very honest, very funny and Gervais is as likable as ever.
Avengement (2019)
Don't let this slip by
Loved it. Especially the little bald guy that decks Adkins in prison.
Y'know, the only guy in the whole film that puts him down without a scratch :D
But seriously, this is a lot of well choreographed, brutal fun!
And to echo another reviewer - Give Jesse and Scott a decent budget for their next film - just imagine what they could create!
Us (2019)
Excellent Creepy Fun
Loved it. Solid 7.5 for me.
Don't watch the trailer.
Well acted, filmed and directed.
It's a weird one... You don't want to think too much, but at the same time the more active your imagination the more you'll enjoy it... Probably.
Nice couple of twists/developments. Just prepare to fill in some of the gaps yourself.
I'm wondering if the biggest issue for people is it explaining too little or even too much. The gf and I have the same issue respectively.
More from Jordan Peele please!
Meta-spoiler:
This could have been worked into great SCP story.
Cats (2019)
Misunderstood
If you see it as the new Cronenberg, it's fine.
I'd like to see them replace all the songs with screams for the Directors cut.
The Dead Don't Die (2019)
Where Hollywood actors go to die
Beyond a solid bunch of actors being present, and a handful of comical moments, there was nothing to like about this film.
It shouldn't be possible 'not' to recommend anything with this much Bill Murray (and he does an okay job with what he got) but this film manages it.
And all the ingredients for a decent film were there. It's as if the director was tasked in ruining it. Every single story arc is either cut short, ruined or simply abandoned.
I'm fine with budget, niche movies as they often have a interesting message or journey that lingers in your brain for a while.
This was the antithesis of that. As if the message was the film, genre and world is pointless. I don't mean nihilism, but literal, technical pointlessness.
Maybe this film is a world is where actors go to die?
All the actors that have forced their childish politics on us will eventually find themselves trapped in a boring, aimless movie in which to suffer a brutal, meaningless death. And no amount of cheap, cringeworthy 4th-wall breaks will save them.
You're irrelevant and your death will mean nothing - I'm sure a Hollywood actor couldn't imagine anything worse.
SKIP THIS.
Altered Carbon: Phantom Lady (2020)
A lame imitation of Altered Carbon!
I got through Season 2, episode 1, and found I couldn't care less. I'll leave my impressions and won't bother with the rest.
Within the very first 10 minutes, Kovacs - who is basically a near untouchable, elite James Bond on steroids with lifetimes of experience - acts like a dumb henchman with zero regard or awareness of his surroundings.
I'm charitably thinking: he's playing them so he can get close to the bad guy - and what an awesome way to start a fresh series - Kovacs at the end of a big play to remind us how awesome he is..
But NO. He really is acting like a dumb henchman. There's absolutely nothing clever about this opening. "You shot me in the back", SERIOUSLY?!
And then they sleeve him into a wooden actor who cares about as much as the writers.
Pile on a ton of rushed, uninspired exposition and film it all drowned in a soft focused, brightly-coloured, confused blur as forgettable as the script.
It's basically another throwaway TV show written for brainless teenagers.
I'll give a point for our returning AI - as forced as the initial dialogue was - a point for some of the action - blatant plot-armour aside - and a point for general ambience and the song.
I loved the books and I'd give season one a 7; their biggest crime was changing our Envoys (who were supposed to be a massive, elite, regimented fighting force) into a bunch of unlikable, forest-dwelling resistance fighters.
And I'm completely on board with different actors playing Kovacs. I was actually looking forward to seeing who they'd cast. I knew it wouldn't be a white male in today's climate - not that I care, we just need a decent actor.
And we get this meaningless fodder.
A world as rich as AC, which everything LITERALLY written down for you, and you pump out this brainless, forgettable cheese.
Our lead sleepwalks through the first episode, as if he's completely aware of his plot-armour.
An opposing character even says something along the lines of "you don't realize who this guy is, he's 'allowed' you to capture him".
But the thing is, NO, he's been completely useless and barely aware of what's going on - the writers just stopped anyone killing him because they are useless, uninspired, sub-par hacks.
WHAT A LET DOWN.
