Barbarian (2022)
The first 3rd to half was great... after that was just strange.
If the movie followed the same flow as the first act it would have been award winning horror. The mystery and second guessing of motives could have made a full length horror even with some elements of the last acts. The utter lack of utilizing skaarsgard for most of the movie kind if upset me.
Unfortunately it turns into basically 2 different movies of 2 different horror genres which, of the 2, the first act is my preference. (Psychological / mystery vs basically a slasher flick)
Still, it has its charm and interesting characters worth a full watch if you start it. Don't expect anything profound, though, that ship sailed after the first act.
The Expanse: Babylon's Ashes (2022)
Worth the wait through the slow episodes
This ties things together nicely and adds to the story that happens after this one ends. There are a few things that don't follow the books but I cannot complain given its format. I almost got teary eyed at a couple points but it was likely related to knowing how it goes in the books. Definitely a good finish for Amazon... who is going to finish it off?? I hope there is an answer.
Evil: 2 Fathers (2019)
Not the best...
This is episode differs from the rest... but it was entertaining watching them act "drunk". It was done better than most "drunk" scenes.
Apparition (2019)
Much potential edited (badly) for time
At 1:13:52 and for a few seconds is all you need to see to understand this movie has an editing problem. There was a lot of potential to develop some characters and make this low budget film somewhat worthy of a good review but it failed to deliver. I give it 4 stars because it got my imagination going on where this movie could have gone (but didn't).
Its not as terrible as some of the reviewers say (except I saw one who paid to see it, I understand the bad review). Watch it or not, the premise was good and just didn't hold up.
Tales from the Loop (2020)
Yes.. it is slow. Scifi is used symbiotically for the drama.
I'm through 6 episodes and its is very slow. The drama out weighs the scifi but I do find myself wrapped up in the characters and story. It's almost an anthology but the stories intertwine too much to call it an anthology. If you enjoy some slow but consistent character development mixed with interesting scifi that results in a good drama then this is your show. I'm a straight up scifi nut but this was/is still entertaining through the 6th episode. There are some VERY slow episodes, about 1/3 so far but the endings were satisfying enough.
