V luchakh solntsa (2015)
almost 2 hours to communicate a 30 minute message
This filmmaker is of the leave-the-camera-on school, also of the cut- nothing school, a dangerously boring combination.
Guess I have to write more than just a hot take. I wish bad filmmakers suffered a video quality penalty. Good cameras are so accessible these days that everyone thinks they can direct. I really can't believe I allowed this movie to suck 2 hours of my life like the worlds most uninteresting eel. Have I expressed how annoyed I am at this doc? I don't even want to give it the satisfaction of addressing it's content. I feel like the director was trying to brainwash me into enjoying completely unrestrained self-indulgent dullness. Wow, there's still 20 minutes to go. Unbelievable.

So dumb
This episode's writing was schmaltzy and stupid. But what I really found irritating was how every gun on this show seems to have a firing delay of 3 seconds. This was never more apparent than when we were presented with several automated motion-sensing mini-guns being trained on Oliver. A situation he responds to by immediately going into A LOT of motion. The automated gun's counter response? Hesitate for a few seconds while Oliver bows-and-arrows himself up into the rafters, wait for the PA to whisper 'Okay he's clear', and only then to start spraying bullets randomly in all directions.
The show is based on a dumb comic with a dumb premise but it doesn't have to be so dumb. It puts itself in these situations! It really feels like the writers let a lot of things not make sense because they're not really into it.

The Sadistic Choice Fallacy
This episode was ruined by a contrived moral fallacy that is rampant in our society. Ivo made the choice to shoot Shado, not Oliver.
This is more than just a problem with this and many other TV and movie scripts. It's a problem with society. The choices terrorists make are on their heads and no one else's. They are not automatons, they are not attack dogs, they are human beings with free will. They are manipulative, they try to get into your head and convince you that the responsibility for the immoral choice they are about to make rests with whomever they chose to pass the blame onto. I would go so far as to say that by buying into their framing, you are complicit in their immorality. Do not accept sadistic choices, they are inherently fallacious.
On top of this it's lazy writing. Boo.
