A hidden gem
25 September 2022
I can understand that not everybody likes or understands this movie, as its humour is rather dark and based on a view behind the thin layer of cozy, well-established bourgeois civilization.

Stay away if Hollywood's obvious storylines are your thing, but don't miss it if you like for example the darker Danish comedies like Green Butcher or Adam's Apples.

It's rare enough that a German movie combines good acting, beautiful imagery and a consistent storyline without destroying everything by theatre-style overacting or messing up the end.

Here everything is well-made, so this movie definitely deserves more attention.

British Humour splatter fun

This mix reminds me a lot of Guy Ritchie movies. That in six snappy parts plus a bit of end-of-the-world backwoods girl romance is extremely entertaining if you like that kind of humour mixed with violence.

Really

At the time of writing this has a 5,0 rating. Wtf? This is a really good movie! Great performances but also you have a love story mixed with a story about drug addiction and an alternative reality on top. Not a popcorn movie, right, so if you want something simple and straight, this is not yours. Else: watch it!

Beautiful pictures, good acting, but very cheesy.

First: most reviews here keep on saying that this is a true story. No, it's not. That out of the way: the story is good, but often very simple minded and you shouldn't start applying logical thinking to it. Ok, it's still gripping and shows in beautiful images a trip through Siberia. However, the stereotypical characters and especially these unbelievably cheesy god-loving scenes back home really make me cringe.

Unbelievably bad script

The movie looks well made, the actors are decent enough but the storyline and dialogs are so bad that sometimes I wondered if the whole thing was a persiflage. Alas, it isn't.

disappointing
27 November 2013
I'm so disappointed that I'm tempted to give a one star vote - but that would be unfair.

The reasons for my disappointment are: I expected something original, as the book the movie is supposed to be based on is very original. Also, if you have a cast like this, then you would be stupid to not invest in a decent script, right? And then, IMDb currently gives 7.1 stars...

The reality is: This is just an ordinary zombie movie, nothing original, let alone intelligent, in it. What's worse is that the script is crap: There are gaping holes in the plot's logic, so big, that they just spoiled the fun for me. To top it all they built this stupid super-social Hollywood-has-something-for-everybody attitude into a ZOMBIE MOVIE! Like children, wives and dogs getting on your nerves (but not getting killed for it). Like some multicultural "we're all the same" messages - when at the same time the hero is clearly elite.. The last thing I found great in the trailer but absent in the movie is good photography. If you've seen the trailer then you've seen all there is on offer.
