Singin' in the Rain (1952)
Great movie
Musicals have never been a favorite genre of mine in fact I found them to be rather boring but this film changed my view of them for the better. The colors were bold and daring and made the movie feel modern. The musical numbers themselves were catchy and fun so they were bearable to watch. The dancing was a bit to over the top for me but it flowed well with the film and did make it more entertaining to watch. The actors did a great job and due to that this movie was enjoyable to watch. Lastly the plot was simple enough to be easily followed. Overall I really enjoyed all of the aspects of this film and it was a lot more entertaining than I had anticipated which was a pleasant surprise. I would defiantly recommend this to any one with an interest in musicals.
Casablanca (1942)
Great Acting!
After hearing all of the hype surrounding this film my expectations were set rather high, but after i finally sat down and watched this film i was kind of let down. While this film was a bit of a let down it was still somewhat interesting to watch. This film had great acting from both the main and supporting actors who really seemed to give it there all to portray these characters perfectly but that was the only part of this movie that really blew me away. The plot was somewhat interesting but moved a little to slow in my opinion. Overall this film is way over hyped and in my opinion should not be considered on of the best films ever made.
Citizen Kane (1941)
such a let down
This movie is voted one of the best movies of all time by critics and i just don't understand why. The only good part of this movie was the great cinematography but that alone cant make a movie great. Every other aspect of the movie was boring. The actors were awful and the characters they played were even worse, i couldn't identify with any of them. The worst part of this movie was with out a doubt the plot, this movie was told mostly in flashbacks and could not hold my interest. This film also just went on and on and was way overdone.Overall this movie was visually pleasing but every other aspect of it just made this movie unbearable to watch.
Frankenstein (1931)
interesting and creepy
Frankenstein (1931) is one of the first horror movies and really paved the way for the genre to be successful. The plot of this film is truly captivating from the dramatic creation of the monster to the angry mob terrorizing the town. The acting in this film also adds to its thrill and the roles where cast perfectly. What really sets this movie up for success is the setting the castle that this monster was created in is creepy and eerie. Also the weather and the lighting strike add to the scare factor of this film. Overall this film is captivating and just creepy enough to allow it to be a great inspiration to future films in the genre and a timeless classic.
Stagecoach (1939)
light and enjoyable
Westerns have never been a favorite genre of mine but this film was a pleasant surprise. It didn't just focus on the cowboys vs the Indians it had a deeper plot than that. The best part of this film was the depth in which you learn about each character. There wasn't just one main character that we got to watch grow but a group of people who grew not only individually but also as a group. While i did enjoy the the character growth i felt that other than that the plot felt slightly boring and bland. There were little spurts of action but not enough to maintain my focus throughout the whole movie. Overall this movie was enjoyable but a little bit more action would have made it perfect.
I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932)
Thrilling yet influential
I Am a Fugitive from a Chain Gang (1932) is a great film. The acting in this film was really convincing and due to this alone the movie was able to hold my attention from start to finish. The plot was also captivating, it has something that any one could enjoy rather it be the crime aspect or the cute love story. With all of the plot aspects this film was still able to get its message across, that being the mistreatment of chain gang members. Well this movie was great on screen it was also great off screen, after its release the mistreatment of chain gang members become more relevant to the public and reform came soon after. Overall this film was captivating and influential.
The Circus (1928)
Surprisingly funny
This is the first silent movie that I have ever watched and I have to say I am presently surprised. I always assumed that a movie with no words couldn't possible make me laugh but it turns out I was wrong. Throughout this whole movie I was laughing from the very beginning when the tramp is running through a mirror maze to when he is walking on the tight rope at the very end. I was sucked into this movie from the very start and I would have to say it tells a better story than half of the movies I have seen in theater recently. So if you are wondering if you should give silent movies a shot I would say this is a great one to get you started!
